A week in Kansas part 2 Kansas Badlands
I don't remember how I heard about the Kansas Badlands. Or whether I uncovered the existence of Castle Rock first or Monument Rocks. Many people go to one or the other. Few go to both.
I traveled almost 100 miles the day I set out to find these ancient landmarks. 100 miles on dirt roads. Roads with names like GO 80 and GO I.
Very few towns. Very few cars on the road. Very few houses. Miles and miles of fields, the corn long gone and the milo not quite ready, and pastures of cows who are fed both crops. Huge farms, occasional farmhouses, but mostly me and the road.
Why? I wanted to see these odd structures I'd read about. Giant rock formations in Kansas? Kansas? Flat ol' Kansas?
It was 20 miles on a dirt road to Castle Rock, my first stop since I was traveling east to west. There is no other way to do it. But the road is very very good....no ruts and not covered in gravel. Until you get within a few miles of the rocks and then it had some very difficult places to navigate. I was glad the van sits up high.
From Castle Rock I could have gone toward Rt 70, driven east 20 miles or so and then south for 20 miles until the turn off and then the last miles are dirt. I, however, decided to let the Google Lady lead me straight through the county...all 60 miles of it on dirt roads. Again, good roads until you got closer and then the last 3 miles started to get bumpy.
I'm glad I took the dirt path , I''m glad I took the time to visit these primordial geological forms. They are simply fascinating.
I was tired by the end of the day but oh so happy.
Dallas-Hong Kong flight AA137 達拉斯--香港航班: Sand & Black Hills, Brooks Range, Arctic Russia 2016-03-05
An 8,111-mile late-winter non-stop flight from Dallas to Hong Kong crosses the Red River into Oklahoma, Kansas, followed by view of the Nebraska Sandhills and South Dakota Black Hills near Sturgis, and Montana's Yellowstone River before entering Canada.
On the thinning of clouds below in northern Canada, the MacKenzie Mountains are followed by Alaska's Brooks Range and the last frontier state's last frontier at the icy shore of Arctic Ocean's Chukchi Sea west of Barrow.
The peaks of the ranges of the tundra and taiga of Russia's far east are showcased until the flight's quick passage through China, and the Pearl River Delta's Wanshan Archipelago accompanies the descent into Hong Kong.

Some Wiki info on this vast region of Siberia of Russia:
The Sakha (Yakutia) Republic (Russian: Республика Саха (Якутия), tr. Respublika Sakha (Yakutiya); IPA: [rʲɪsˈpublʲɪkə sɐˈxa jɪˈkutʲɪjə]; Yakut: Саха Өрөспүүбүлүкэтэ, Sakha Öröspǖbülükete) is a federal subject of Russia (a republic). It has a population of 958,528 (2010 Census), consisting mainly of ethnic Yakuts and Russians.
...
Sakha can be divided into three great vegetation belts. About 40% of Sakha lies above the Arctic circle and all of it is covered by permafrost which greatly influences the region's ecology and limits forests in the southern region. Arctic and subarctic tundra define the middle region, where lichen and moss grow as great green carpets and are favorite pastures for reindeer. In the southern part of the tundra belt, scattered stands of dwarf Siberian pine and larch grow along the rivers. Below the tundra is the vast taiga forest region. Larch trees dominate in the north and stands of fir and pine begin to appear in the south. Taiga forests cover about 47% of Sakha and almost 90% of the cover is larch.
