Wahoo! We made to day 100 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year! Only 265 days to go! What better way to celebrate than mountain biking in Reefton?
How did we get to mountain biking in Reefton? Well the journey here was thanks to a bunch of friendly locals who are super keen to show us what their small town on the West Coast of the South Island is famous for. We go on a walking tour of Reefton with our hostel host from the Old Breadshop Backpackers, who introduces to a bunch of locals around town.
One thing leads to another and we are having drinks at the Broadway Tearooms having a conversation with a guy who wants to show us one of the mountain biking trails in Reefton. We are in!
Reefton boasts one of the best places for mountain biking in New Zealand with a huge range of trails close to the town. After picking up some bikes from the Reefton Sports Centre, we hit the Lookout Track.
We make our way up this hill at the back of Reefton to a lookout and then do some downhill mountain biking on the Zigzag Track in Reefton.
We downhill mountain bike all the way back to Reefton while crossing the Reefton swing bridge. Once we get back to our hostel, we are invited to go to a quiz night at the local pub.
So what do you think of mountain biking in Reefton? And have you had any friendly New Zealand locals experiences? Let us know in the comments.

-- About this video --
Today we are driving from St Arnaud to Reefton on the West Coast of New Zealand. The drive is long through Lewis Pass but there are plenty of awesome reasons to break up the journey and makes some stops along the way. First up, it’s Maruia Falls.
Maruia Falls is just a five-minute walk from a car park off the main state highway through Lewis Pass. We get a couple of vantage points for pictures of the wide and roaring Maruia Falls. Then we are on our way through Lewis Pass.
A detour off Lewis Pass brings us to Maruia Hot Springs, some natural mineral hot pools on the West Coast. These South Island hot pools are pumped from a natural hot spring across a braided river. The Maruia Hot Pools are surrounded by stunning views of South Island mountain scenery.
We take the lunch and pool entry package, so after some lunch we are given a tour of the Maruia Hot Springs which has indoor and outdoor hot pools. We opt for the outdoor hot pools which are in a natural-looking setting. There are multiple things to try for massages from waterfalls and such.
After relaxing in the Maruia Springs for far too long, we get changed and go for a nearby walk along the river and among the West Coast South Island scenery. Just ask reception for directions.
Our final destination tonight is Reefton on the West Coast region of New Zealand.
So what do you think of Maruia Hot Springs? Would you stop here to relax in these New Zealand hot pools? Let us know in the comments.

The discovery of gold in Murray Creek Reefton blaks pont Adventure
Blacks Point is an historic township located just 2 km east of Reefton on the Lewis Pass Highway (SH7) towards Christchurch. It is a small settlement rich in cultural history with strong Cornish and Celtic connections dating back to the 1860s. The discovery of gold in Murray Creek, in the Blacks Point hills by the Murray brothers was the spark that set this area alight.
With its setting alongside the Inangahua River, historic cottages, cottage gardens and meandering streets, Blacks Point is a fascinating place to visit and is the launching point for the renowned Murray Creek walking track network.
Whether you’re a history buff, a keen walker, looking for your next mountain biking adventure or just want to take in some amazing scenery there is plenty to see and do in Blacks Point.
Blacks Point is home to the amazing Blacks Point Museum, which houses thousands of exhibition items displaying the rich history of the Reefton and Inangahua area. A highlight of the museum is the Golden Fleece Stamper Battery, this beautifully maintained piece of mining memorabilia is still in working condition and brings history to life right before your eyes.
Blacks Point is the starting point to numerous walks taking you into the wild and beautiful West Coast native bush. At an easy pace you can stroll the surrounding area including the lovely miner’s cottage and cottage gardens, or along the 15 minute Golden Fleece Walk through beautiful native beech forest, teeming with birdlife including native tui and bellbirds. For the more energetic take the vigorous walk to the Energetic Mine also known as the infamous “Slaughter House”.
For those keen mountain bikers Blacks Point, Reefton is really making a name for itself as a great location for your next adventure. The Murray’s Track; Ajax Track – “the Machine Track”; and the Lankey Creek Tram Track all set-off from Blacks Point. For the skilled biker try the renowned Murray Creek to Waitahu Saddle – “the Devils Tail” track. This track climbs up a historic road to the Waitahu Junction then drops down a benched single track ending with technical, devilish, descent down to the Clematis suspension bridge. Ride back to Reefton via Gannons Rd and the Reefton Highway or if you still have some energy to burn head up the valley to Montgomerie Hut.

-- About this video --
Today we have just a short activity but one definitely worth doing if you are passing through Motueka in the Nelson Tasman Region. We are doing the walk to the Riwaka Resurgence in the Kahurangi National Park.
Despite the rain, we venture into the Kahurangi National Park on the Riwaka Resurgence Walk. The walk is only about 15 minutes through dense native New Zealand forest alongside the rapids and waterfalls of the Riwaka River.
At the end of the Riwaka Resurgence walk we arrive at the resurgence of the Riwaka River – a river emerging from underneath a mountain. There are information panels to tell of the Maori significance of the area and what this place means to the local culture of New Zealand.
We race the rain back to the campervan where we head back to Marahau and hope for better weather for our activity tomorrow.
So what do you think of the Riwaka Resurgence? Is it a place you would do a pit stop at in the Kahurangi National Park?

Mountain Biking in Picton - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand

-- About this video --
Today’s activity out of our 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand is mountain biking in Picton. The Picton mountain biking trail we are doing today is the Link Pathway between Picton and Havelock.
The Link Pathway in Picton is a great alternative to the Queen Charlotte Track. We hire some bikes from Wilderness Guides on Picton waterfront then bike straight to the start of the Link Pathway Track up the Queen Drive.
There are loads of options for mountain biking in Picton but the Link Pathway is a full one day track or half day if you return halfway along the Link Pathway track. The gradient is relatively steady on the Link Pathway in Picton so it’s even good for beginners like us.
The Link Pathway in Marlborough has some awesome views of the Marlborough Sounds, making another reason as a good alternative to the Queen Charlotte Track. By trailing through native forest and having epic views of the Queen Charlotte Sound along the way, the Link Pathway is one of the best places for mountain biking in Marlborough.
So what do you think of mountain biking in Picton? Is the Link Pathway in Marlborough something you would add to your New Zealand bucket list?
