Bahrain, officially the Kingdom of Bahrain, is a small Arab monarchy in the Persian Gulf. It is an island country consisting of a small archipelago centered around Bahrain Island, situated between the Qatar peninsula and the north eastern coast of Saudi Arabia, to which it is connected by the 25 km (16 mi) King Fahd Causeway.
Bahrain's population is 1,234,571 (c. 2010), including 666,172 non-nationals. It is 780 km2 in size, making it the third smallest nation in Asia after the Maldives and Singapore.
Bahrain is the site of the ancient Dilmun civilisation. It has been famed since antiquity for its pearl fisheries, which were considered the best in the world into the 19th century.
Bahrain was one of the earliest areas to convert to Islam (AD 628). Following a period of Arab rule, Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in 1521, who in turn were expelled in 1602 by Shah Abbas I of the Safavid dynastyunder the Persian Empire. In 1783, the Bani Utbah clan captured Bahrain from Nasr Al-Madhkur and it has since been ruled by the Al Khalifa royal family, with Ahmed al Fateh as Bahrain's first hakim.
In the late 1800s, following successive treaties with the British, Bahrain became a protectorate of the United Kingdom. In 1971, Bahrain declared independence. Formerly an emirate, Bahrain was declared a Kingdom in 2002. In 2011, the country experienced protests inspired by the regional Arab Spring.
Bahrain had the first post-oil economy in the Persian Gulf. Since the late 20th century, Bahrain has invested in the banking and tourism sectors. Many large financial institutions have a presence in Manama, the country's capital. Bahrain has a high Human Development Index and was recognised by the World Bank as a high income economy.

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go for a walk around the historic Riffa Fort in Bahrain which was built as a fort during the reign of Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh Al Khalifa in 1812, while another source claim that it was built during the rule of the Persian Safavid Empire of Iran over Bahrain during the 17th century. This historic fort was converted into a residence in the 19th century for Shaikh Salman Bin Ahmed Al Fateh Al Khalifa. Riffa Fort or 'Qal'at ar-Rifa' is now named Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Fort offers a splendid view across the Hunanaiya valley. With Riffa being home to the seat of government until 1869, this fort was strategically important in at the time.

Arad Fort is a 15th-century fort in Arad, Bahrain.
Formerly guarding a separate island of its own, the fort and its surroundings have since been joined to Muharraq Island.
Arad Fort was built in the typical style of Islamic forts during the 15th century before the Portuguese invasion of Bahrain in ad 1622.
This fort is one of the compact defensive forts in Bahrain.
In its present location, it overlooks various sea passages of Muharraq's shallow seashores.
In the past, there was an inaccessible marine channel which was controlled by the local people to prevent ships from breaking through to the island where the fort is located.
The fort is square and on every corner there is a cylindrical tower.
It is surrounded by a small trench which used to be filled with water from wells that were drilled especially for this purpose.
In every corner of the upper wall of the fort there are nose shaped openings for marksmen.
Close to the Bahrain International Airport, the fort has been extensively renovated and is illuminated at night.
Traditional materials have been used in the renovation and maintenance of the fort after making extensive analysis of the original materials such as sea stones, lime, sand, and palm trunks.
Arad Fort is one of Bahrain's most important fortified castles.
Due to its strategic location overlooking various sea passages of Muharraq Island, Arad Fort was used as a defensive fortress throughout history,
from the time Bahrain was occupied by the Portuguese in the 16th century to the reign of Shaikh Salman Bin Ahmed Al-Khalifa in the 19th century.
Arad Fort was most recently restored between 1984 and 1987,
under the direction of the Historic Buildings and Conservation Architect, Dr Archie Walls.
In order to maintain the historical authenticity and value of Arad Fort, exclusively traditional materials were used, such as coral stone, lime and tree trunks.
It is believed that the fort was used by the Omanis during their brief occupation of Bahrain in 1800, and it is located adjacent to the strategic waterways between Bahrain Island and Muharraq Island.
The canon found on top of the Fort's South Bastion pointed directly down the narrow entrance channel, formed by reefs on either side of it, that leads into Muharram Bay.
Little is known of the fort's history, and there is no firm evidence of the precise date of construction, but comprehensive excavations have been undertaken in order to discover its past.
The Fort's construction follows the 'layered technique' identified by Dr Walls in the mid 1970s, a technique whose origins are in mud brick constructions.

Riffa fort
The Riffa Fort is basically an old building, overlooking the Hunainaya Valley, but, the amazing thing about it is its architecture. It is a sandstone structure, which was home to royal families of the 19th century, with 35 rooms packed in a three square yard area. Another noteworthy aspect about the fort is its air-conditioning system, which is unlike the one used in modern day, but a useful one in all. There is also the feel of wind towers, which is best-experienced in this tourist site.
Built during the 17th century, during the reign of Persian Safavid Empire, it was converted into a residence for royal family during the 18th century. From then on, Riffa Fort was home to members of royal family and an official seat of government.
The fort is quite spacious inside. It was divided into individual chambers, housing the Amir's army and royal family. The fort also includes water reservoir and a good drainage system. Strategically located, the fort is also important in terms of national security of Bahrain. It is surrounded by desert, and is one of the best places to feel the intensity of wind blown over desert sand during the nights.
Over the years, Riffa Fort has been re-constructed making it a great tourist attraction.

Archaeological excavations carried out since 1954 have unearthed antiquities from an artificial mound of 12 m (39 ft) height containing seven stratified layers, created by various occupants from 2300 BC up to the 18th century, including Kassites, Greeks, Portuguese and Persians. It was once the capital of the Dilmun civilization and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
