Episode 2 - The best of France's western coast …and beyond to Spain
In our second clip of the Haven Knox-Johnston series, John and his team set off on his boat Cecienne along the Atlantic coast of France with its amazing ports and harbours.
The first stop is the thriving and picturesque city of La Rochelle, in the Poitou Charente’s region. Steeped in history, with many museums, medieval houses and renaissance architecture (not forgetting an abundance of shops), La Rochelle offers a great taste of what can be expected from an ideal all year round destination.
The Ile de Re, an island just off the west coast, is the next destination. The island has retained a laid back Gallic charm lost from many mainland regions. Once there, you can rent all types of vehicles to really explore and enjoy all the island has to offer.
Looking to follow the sun further south, Capbreton, located at the mouth of the Boudigau and Bourret rivers in the very South West of France, is a fantastic destination as well as a surfers’ paradise. Hendaye is the last destination before entering Spanish waters. Both Capbreton and Hendaye have great marinas for winter cruising. If you're thinking about taking your boat abroad this winter - here's some inspiration!
Next clip – Cecienne reaches North East Spain…

(EN) Grande Chartreuse is the head monastery of the Carthusian order. It is located in the Chartreuse Mountains, north of the city of Grenoble, in the commune of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse (Isère), France. Originally, the château belonged to the See of Grenoble. In 1084, Saint Hugh gave it to hermit Saint Bruno and his followers who founded the Carthusian Order.
Today, visitors are not permitted at Grand Chartreuse, and motor vehicles are prohibited on the surrounding roads. However, a museum of the Carthusian order and the lives of its monks and nuns stands about two kilometers away.
The order is supported by the sales of Chartreuse liqueur which has been popular in France and later around the world since the early 1700s.
English poet Matthew Arnold wrote one of his finest poems, Stanzas from the Grande Chartreuse, while briefly staying at the monastery around 1850. The quiet, serenity, and monastic calm became, for him, the susurrations of a dying world which contrasted with what he saw as the violent emerging age of machinery. Grand Chartreuse was also described in the 1850 revision of William Wordsworth's The Prelude, Book VI, lines 416-88 (Wordsworth visited the monastery in 1790), and John Ruskin's Praeterita.
The monastery was closed in 1903 by the French state. The monks found refuge in Italy until 1929, but returned in 1940 when it was reopened.
A documentary film about the monastery entitled Into Great Silence, directed by Philip Gröning, received acclaim on the film festival circuit following its release in 2005.

3 Days in Paris, France - 3 - Petit Palais, best Art experience in Paris
A real-life travel video by Travel Flix.
On our last day we concentrated on the Petit Palais and the City of Paris Museum of Fine Arts. Like the Grand Palais, which it faces, it was built for the 1900 Exposition Universelle.
The Beaux-Arts style Petit Palais was designed by Charles Girault, and is around an octi-circular courtyard and garden, similar to the Grand Palais. Its Ionic columns, grand porch, and dome echo those of the Invalides across the river. The tympanum depicting the city of Paris surrounded by muses is the work of sculptor Jean Antoine Injalbert.
The Petit Palais has served as a model for other public buildings, notably for the Royal Museum for Central Africa located in Tervuren, Belgium; and the Museo de Bellas Artes (fine arts museum) in Santiago, Chile.
The museum displays paintings by painters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Nicolas Poussin, Claude Gellée, Fragonard, Hubert Robert, Greuze and a remarkable collection of 19th-century painting and sculpture: Ingres, Géricault, Delacroix, Courbet, Monet, Sisley, Pissarro, Cézanne, Modigliani, Carpeaux, Maillol, Rodin
It's free, uncrowded, peaceful, and beautiful. The Louvre and Musee d'orsay are also fabulous, but here you see a representative, condensed collection, that is manageable, quiet, and inspiring. (and they have a great cafe!)
Music: Thaxted by Gustove Holst, performed by Kevin MacLeod.

Altiport Alpe d´Huez
Flight from Gap Tallard (LFNA) to Alpe d´Huez (LFHU) with my SavannahS. The altiport is situated next to a ski resort at 6000 ft (1800m) and has an inclination of 15%. The scenery at the approach is absolutely spectacular because of the deep valley underneath the airfield and it´s shape but also the way through the mountains from Tallard to this place.
