France: Metz - The 'Circuit des Remparts'
The banks of the Moselle and Seille, from the Bridge 'des Grilles' to the 'Porte des Allemands' and the hill Bellecroix have an impressive heritage linked to the defense of the city. There are the towers, the bridges, the gates, that can be discovered in the circuit of the walls with a marked and commented trail.
There are the ramparts of the 13th and 15th centuries, and on the right bank of the Seille you can see the ramparts of the 17th century.
Finally, there are the fortifications Bellecroix from the 18th and 19th century.
The gates and towers often bear the names of corporations, that maintained in time of peace and defended this place in war time. The walls of the 15th century reached a length of 7 kms.
The 'Porte des Allemands' (13th-15th century)
This real fortress, the Gate, with towers and battlements, is named after the German Teutonic Knights who had founded a hospital nearby. Its construction was begun in 1230 with the construction of a first gate, facing the center and consists of two relatively narrow towers.
It was further strengthened in 1445 with the construction of two new impressive towers, featuring many items of military architecture in order to control access to the bridge over the Seille.
The military history of Bellecroix
It was under Louis XV that Cormontaigne, successor of Vauban, in part, made the double crown of Fort Bellecroix, under the direction of the Military Governor, Marshal Belle-Isle, between 1734 and 1740.
The set, consisting of four bastions, three curtains, three crescents and a telescope, was protected by 3 km of dry ditches and 4.6 miles of underground tunnels.
Under Napoleon III and the late 19th century, the fortifications were further strengthened.

Places to see in ( Auxerre - France ) Abbaye de Saint Germain d'Auxerre
The Abbey of Saint-Germain d'Auxerre was a Benedictine monastery in central France, dedicated to its founder Saint Germain of Auxerre, the bishop of Auxerre, who died in 448. The abbey reached the apex of its cultural importance during the Carolingian era; the source for its early history is an account of the Miracula Sancti Germani Episcopi Autissiodorensis (Miracles of Saint Germain, Bishop of Auxerre) written before ca. 880. The earliest surviving architectural remains are also of the ninth century.
In 1927, beneath the 17th-century frescoed plaster walls of the crypt, were discovered ninth-century wall frescoes, the only surviving large-scale paintings of their date in France to compare to the illuminated manuscripts. During the Revolution, several bays of the nave were demolished and the secularized abbey was used as a hospital. The former nave extended beneath the present forecourt.
In the late twentieth century the abbey's residential and service buildings were remodeled as a museum, presenting prehistoric, Gallo-Roman and medieval finds from Auxerre. An exhibition in 1990 brought the abbey's cultural impact into focus. The former abbey church remains in use for worship at stated times.
