Arrival on Utila - Bay Islands Honduras (2019)
In this episode we take the Utila Dream ferry and travel from La Ceiba on mainland Honduras over to the beautiful island of Utila. Located in the Bay Islands this small idyllic tropical island is a great location for some down time.
Utila is a meca for backpackers and offers some great diving at reasonable prices. Also a great location to do a diving course if you want to learn how to dive.
We are already qualified and experienced divers and decided to dive with Parrots Dive Center. A dive center that is owned by locals, we were not disappointed. A very professional outlet and one that we wouldn't hesitate in recommending.

Paseo Cayala in Guatemala City, Guatemala
Paseo Cayala is a livable, walkable development that offers everything you would want in a “city”; all securely protected by armed guards and security cameras, and surrounded by a ringed “moat” of white stucco walls. Guatemalan developers are building this nearly independent city for the wealthy on the outskirts of a capital marred by crime and snarled by traffic. At its heart is the 34-acre Paseo Cayala Guatemala, with apartments, parks, high-end boutiques, church, nightclubs, and restaurants. It’s bordered by even costlier subdivisions begun earlier. Eventually, the Cayala Management Group hopes to expand the project into “Cayala City,” spreading across 870 acres, an area a little larger than New York’s Central Park.
Built under the direction of the architect and urban planner Leon Krier, with a team of more than 25 Guatemalan and foreign architects. Within the larger project are smaller “districts”. District Moda opens its doors to the visitors of Paseo Cayalá with more than 30 commercial options and offices. It is a new space designed to become Guatemala’s most privileged fashion center. Visitors will find international brands such as Antony Morato, Arturo Calle, Bass, Converse, Ferrari, Porsche, Nike Store, Nautica Kids, Coffe Libre, Casa de los Havanos, Naf Naf, Piel de Toro, Vida Vela, Wild, Sportline Kids and more.
Saul Bistro imported a red double decker bus from England, which now serves crepes and other sweets. The concept officially arrived in Guatemala to expand the fashion and restaurant empire of Saúl E. Méndez. The bus is located in the new fashion district of Paseo Cayalá. Emilio Méndez explains “Since I lived in London I fell in love with all English culture, it has many icons. Our dream was always to bring the English bus. It took us a couple of years to make the decision and find the right bus. ”
In addition to office area and business options, the Fashion District will have two Marriot hotels. The Marriot Hotel will have 160 rooms, swimming pool and meeting rooms. The European designed AC by Marriot will boast 115 rooms, roof-top restaurant & bar. They are expected to be inaugurated later this year. AirBnB rentals are popping up quickly.
Already open is a 24 hour Fitness gym, a Bowling alley, zip-line, baseball park, tennis courts, and a Surf park.
Cayala’s backers promote it as a safe haven in a troubled country, one with an unusual degree of autonomy from the chaotic capital. It also embraces a philosophy that advocates a return to a traditional concept of a city, with compact, agreeable spaces where homes and shops are intermixed.
Detractors, however, say it is a blow to hopes of saving the real traditional heart of Guatemala City by drawing the wealthy from the urban center to participate in the economic and social life of a city struggling with poverty and high levels of crime and violence.
One consideration why some people want to live in Cayala boils down to the fact that many of the wealthy are simply racist. They do not like their fellow citizens. In fact, they don’t even think of them as citizens. Granted not all elites and not all those who are living in or will live in Cayala are racist. However, many of the attitudes that led to the civil war and that were documented in the various human rights reports remain pressing concerns today. Racism lies behind much of what the people and the government do or do not do.

Sierra del Lacandón National Park, Petén, Guatemala, Central America, North America
The Sierra del Lacandón National Park is situated in the tropical rain forest in the north west of Guatemala. It is part of the Maya Biosphere Reserve and is unique for its biodiversity. It is also considered of great importance for the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor as it connects the protected areas of northern Guatemala with those of southern Mexico, like the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas. Several ancient Maya archaeological sites are located within the park boundaries. These include Piedras Negras, El Porvenir, Macabilero, La Pasadita, El Hormiguero, and El Ceibo. The Sierra del Lacandón is a low karstic mountain range in Guatemala and Mexico. It is situated in the north-west of the department of El Petén and the south-east of Chiapas. Its highest points are located near the Mexican border at coordinates 17.244195°N 91.202145°W and 17.195087°N 91.086102°W The range consists of southeast to northwest trending ridges of folded cretaceous limestone and dolomite hills rising above the lowlands of the Petén Basin.

One of my favorite spots in the world is a natural wonder called Semuc Champey. This limestone land bridge, which extends about 1,000 feet over a gushing river, is found near Lanquin, Guatemala. Formed into that limestone, there are gentle waterfalls, small caves, and turquoise pools where people can enjoy a leisurely swim, surrounded by tropical paradise.
