Retalhuleu is a department located in the south-west of Guatemala, extending from the mountains to the Pacific Ocean coast. It has an area of 1856 km². In 2002 the population of the Department of Retalhuleu was 241,411. The capital is the city of Retalhuleu. The largest Native American group in the state is the K'iche' Maya people. The department contains a number of Pre-Columbian ruins, including Takalik Abaj and San Juan Noj.

    Xetutul is a theme park in Guatemala. It is located in the Retalhuleu Department in the southwest of the country. Opening in 2002, Xetutul is the third largest amusement park in Latin America, after Beto Carrero World in Penha, Santa Catarina, Brazil and Six Flags México near Mexico City, Mexico. Xetutul is associated with the nearby Xocomil waterpark, which opened in 1997, and together the two parks receive over one million visitors every year, making the parks the most popular tourist attraction in the country.Xetulul and Xocomil are operated by the Institute for the Recreation of Guatemalan Private Industry Workers —a private company that operates several other parks in Guatemala, as well as nearby hotels and restaurants.

    Xocomil is a water park in Guatemala. It is located in the Retalhuleu Department in the southwest of the country. It is the largest and most-visited water amusement park in the country. The park covers an area of 77,300 m³ and is thematically designed around a recreation of a Mayan pyramid. The park contains four different pools and two different wave pools, one for children and one for adults. It also features different kinds of waves and a beach designed resting area as well as the Tumala river tube and the Rapidos de Xocomil which features five different options of speed slides in a 148 m ride.     Tak'alik Ab'aj is a pre-Columbian archaeological site in Guatemala. It was formerly known as Abaj Takalik; its ancient name may have been Kooja. It is one of several Mesoamerican sites with both Olmec and Maya features. The site flourished in the Preclassic and Classic periods, from the 9th century BC through to at least the 10th century AD, and was an important centre of commerce, trading with Kaminaljuyu and Chocolá. Investigations have revealed that it is one of the largest sites with sculptured monuments on the Pacific coastal plain. Olmec-style sculptures include a possible colossal head, petroglyphs and others.
