Mexico City & Puebla - Mexico Unplugged Intrepid tour days 1-4
The Intrepid group tour (Mexico Unplugged) started in Mexico City, we met in the Mallorca Hotel and walked to the Historic Centre for a meal at a wonderful converted chapel the Cafe de Tacuba. We opted for a tour of the markets first where we saw the amazing murals painted all over the wall of the Abelardo L. Rodriguez Market. The Mexico muralist movement was started in 1921 after the socialist revolution to show the history of Mexico. Also the Mercado de Sonora, where you can buy everything for witchcraft (unfortunately no video allowed). We were given various local produce including a Mamay milk shake and chill flavoured fruit sticks, chapulines (fried grasshoppers). In the afternoon we visited Teotihuacan the colossal Mesoamerican site established about 100BC with the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, we climbed the huge Pyramid of the Moon and, along the Avenue of the Dead to the even bigger Pyramid of the Sun. After this site we visit a farm where they made the alcoholic drink Pulque and finally had a meal in the hose of a local resident. The following day we took a local bus to Puebla. After the orientation walk we went to a wrestling match between Puebla and Mexico City fighters. In the morning we toured the city, refreshed by delicious Churros en route, saw the El Parian street market and ate in the Plaza Victoria. The next day we opted for a tour of Cholula including the Great Pyramid built from 3rd century BC and a centre for worship until around 12th century, now topped by the Christain church Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. We saw a vermillion flycatcher and Yucatan squirrels. We also had a chance to try Rompope, a Mexican eggnog, before visiting the ornate Santa Maria Tonantzintla and Santa Francisco Acatepec churches. Back in Puebla we had a look in the Escuela de Bellas Artes, the Teatro Principal and the church of San Cristobal
