10. Gournia
Gournia is the site of a Minoan palace complex on the island of Crete, Greece, excavated in the early 20th century by the American archaeologist, Harriet Boyd-Hawes. Gournia lies in the municipality of Ierapetra in the prefecture of Lasithi.
9. The Amari Valley & Mt Ida
Crete's Mount Ida is the island's highest summit, sacred to the Goddess Rhea, and wherein lies the legendary cave in which baby Zeus was concealed from his father Cronus. It is one of a number of caves believed to have been the birthplace or hiding place of Zeus. On the flank of this mountain is the Amari Valley, the site of expansion by the ancient settlement at Phaistos.
8. Samaria Gorge
A 14km gorge that descends 1250 meters to sea level through some of Europe's most spectacular natural scenery. The walk up the gorge from south to north is pleasant for the main part but the last 3km, up the Xyloskala is extremely tiring. The most famous part of the gorge is the stretch known as the Gates, where the sides of the gorge close in to a width of only four meters and soar up to a height of almost 300 meters.
7. Gortys
Gortyn is a municipality and an archaeological site on the Mediterranean island of Crete, 45 km away from the modern capital Heraklion. The seat of the municipality is the village Agioi Deka. Gortyn, the Roman capital of Crete, was first inhabited around 3200 BC, and was a flourishing Minoan town between 1600-1100 BC.
6. Rethymno
Rethymno is a city of approximately 40,000 people in Greece, the capital of Rethymno regional unit on the island of Crete. It was built in antiquity, but was never a competitive Minoan centre. It was, however, strong enough to mint its own coins and maintain urban growth. One of these coins is today depicted as the crest of the town with two dolphins in a circle.
5. Phaistos
Phaistos currently refers to a Bronze Age archaeological site at modern Phaistos, a municipality in south central Crete. Ancient Phaistos was located about 5.6 km east of the Mediterranean Sea. The name, Phaistos, survives from ancient Greek references to a city in Crete of that name, shown to be, in fact, at or near the current ruins.
4. Chania
Chania is the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania regional unit. It lies along the north coast of the island, about 70 km west of Rethymno and 145 km (90 mi) west of Heraklion. Despite being heavily bombed during World War II, Chania's Old Town is considered the most beautiful urban district on Crete, especially the crumbling Venetian harbour.

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is a museum located in Heraklion on Crete. It is one of the greatest museums in Greece and the best in the world for Minoan art, as it contains the most notable and complete collection of artifacts of the Minoan civilization of Crete.

Heraklion is the major city and capital of the largest Greek island of Crete. Its Archaeological Museum holds the remains of the 3000-year old Minoan civilization, which grew around the nearby legendary palace of Knossos (of Minotaur fame), as well as Byzantine churches and a well-preserved Venetian wall and fortress from the 15th century.
1. Ancient Knossos
Knossos is the site of the most important and best known Minoan palace complex in Crete. It is located some 5 km south of Heraklion. According to tradition, Knossos was the seat of the legendary Cretan king Minos. The Palace is also connected with further legends, such as the myth of the Labyrinth and the Minotaur, as well as the story of Daidalos and Ikaros. Excavation has revealed that the site was continuously inhabited from the Neolithic period (7000-3000 B.C.) until Roman times.

Stalis Crete, you need to see this before you visit !
Stalis is 30 kilometres east of Heraklion, 3 kilometres after Hersonissos and 3 kilometres before Malia.
The intensive tourist development of the area has resulted in the three towns (Hersonissos, Stalis and Malia) merging into a single coastal resort about 10 km long, full of hotels and apartments. Especially if you take the coastal road from Stalis to Malia, it is impossible to see where one resort ends and the other begins.
Cretan tourism grew dramatically in the 1980s. This was when Stalis, too, became a popular holiday resort in east Crete. Until then it was simply the beach where the inhabitants of Mohos, the village on the mountain rising south of Stalis, spent their summer holidays.
The fact that Stalis did not exist as an autonomous village until then is obvious from its disjointed layout. There is no central square, just the coast road lined on both sides with shops, tavernas and hotels.
Stalis differs from neighbouring Hersonissos and Malia in that it does not share their wild nightlife. Stalis is more suitable for family holidays, but if you want to dance the night away, Hersonissos and Malia are close by.
This does not mean that Stalis has no bars and cafes. There are lots of cafeterias and beach bars along the beach, so you can still have fun, just at a quieter pace than that of the neighbouring resorts. Many people consider this an advantage rather than a disadvantage.
The main Hersonissos-Malia road cuts Stalis in two. On one side is coastal Stalis (below the road), and on the other is Stalis above the road. The main road is very busy and there are traffic lights at only one point, the crossroads to Mohos and the New National Road. You can also turn here to go down to Stalis beach.
The constant flow of traffic along the main road means that pedestrians must be extremely careful when crossing it. There are underpasses at various points, both for pedestrians and for normal-sized cars. Be careful, though, as some signs give the wrong height for underpasses; in the accompanying picture, the height is marked as 1 metre instead of the correct 1.9 metres.
There are many restaurants and tavernas in Stalis, as well as tourist shops, travel agencies for day trips, car and motorbike hire agencies and, of course, mini markets.
There are banks in Hersonissos and Malia, while Stalis has various cashpoints.
From Stalis there are regular buses to Heraklion, Hersonissos and Gouves to the west and Malia and Agios Nikolaos to the east, so it's easy to visit many towns and cities along the north coast of Crete.
The beach at Stalis is a beatiful sandy beach divided into two sections, one extending from the western corner of the bay to the Anthoussa Hotel, and the other from the Anthoussa Hotel to Malia.
The beach is exposed to the weather, so on windy days you need to be careful and follow the lifeguards' advice.
The water becomes deeper very gradually, so small children are free to enjoy the sea.
The beach at Stalis is an organised one with lifeguards, umbrellas and sun loungers. Some beachside restaurants have special offers combining beach umbrella and lounger hire with lunch or drinks.
Lovers of watersports will have no difficulty finding what they are after.

-Elafonissi Beach in West Crete: in the town of Chania is an amazing pink beach of Crete. Imagine pink sand and green-blue waters! It's one of the most popular beaches in the WORLD!
-Balos Beach northwest of Chania was my FAVORITE beach in Greece. It's SO photogenic. A lagoon visit of a lifetime!
-Seitan Limania Beach is northwest of Chania, Crete. It lays between the steep cliffs of the peninsula. Of the three beaches, this is lesser known but absolutely gorgeous!

Crete (Greek Κρήτη, modern Greek transliteration Kríti) is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean.
Crete is a popular tourist destination; its attractions include the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos, the classical site of Gortys, the Venetian castle at Rethymno, and the Samaria Gorge, as well as many other natural sites, monuments, and beaches.
Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization the oldest civilization in Europe.
Crete is extremely mountainous, and its character is defined by a high mountain range crossing from West to East, formed by three different groups of mountains. These are: the White Mountains or Lefka Ori (2,452 m); the Idi range (Psiloritis 2,456 m); the Dikti mountains (2,148 m); Kedros (1,777 m); Thripti (1,489 m)
These mountains gifted Crete with fertile plateaus, such as Lasithi, Omalos and Nidha ; caves, such as Diktaion and Idaion ; and gorges such as the famous Gorge of Samaria. The protected area of the Samaria Gorge is the home of kri-kri, while Cretan mountains and gorges are refuges for the endangered vulture Lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus).
The south coast, including the Messara plain and Asterousia mountains, falls in the North African climatic zone, and thus enjoys significantly more sunny days and high temperatures throughout the year. In southern Crete date palms bear fruit and swallows remain year-long, without migrating to Africa.
Crete is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Greece ; fifteen percent of all arrivals in Greece come through the city of Heraklion (port and airport), while charter journeys to Iraklion last year made up 20% of all charter flights in Greece. Overall, more than two million tourists visited Crete last year, and this increase in tourism is reflected on the number of hotel beds, rising by 53% in the period between 1986 to 1991, when the rest of Greece saw increases of only 25%. Today , the island's tourism infrastructure caters to all tastes, including a very wide range of accommodation ; the island's facilities take in large luxury hotels with their complete facilities swimming pools, sports and recreation , smaller family-owned apartments, camping facilities and others. Visitors reach the island via two international airports in Heraklion and Hania, or by boat to the main ports of Heraklion, Hania, Rethimno, and Agios Nikolaos.
