Race at Nagoya Velodrome, Japan | 第15回 エンジョイ バンク IN 名古屋
Most velodromes (or Keirin-jo 競輪場 as they say in Japanese) in Japan are used strictly only for supporting the Keirin gambling industry. That means the tracks are usually only used for races and for when the licenced professional Keirin athletes want to train on them.
However, occasionally throughout the year, there are special events that allow amateurs (non-licenced professional riders) to ride on and race on the tracks. Today was one of those special events at the Nagoya Keirin-jo The name of the event was 第15回エンジョイバンクIN名古屋, which is roughly translated to “Enjoy the bank (track) in Nagoya”.
It was a full day event, with about 300 people who came out to participate. There were categories and divisions for different age groups, ability level, and for both road and track fixed gear bikes. Most races were either time trials and sprints, with the only mass-start races being the match sprints, the keirin sprints (6 people), and the elimination (with heats with a max of 8 people). I asked why they don’t do more interesting mass-start races like the points race, but I guess it is too big of an insurance liability, and they don’t want to accidentally damage the track (which makes sense).
I signed up for the match sprints, the kilo (1 km TT), and the keirin, but then decided to not do the match sprints after they posted the time schedule since it was too early for me to get there in time.
My friend Zac and his family were also at the event, and they gave me shelter in their tent. After the event, we all went out to get some sushi.
All in all, it was a great day, and I'm always happy when I have a chance to ride on a velodrome here in Japan.

Landscape Japan - Shiga mountain area
Visited Shiga plateau in deep autumn from Tokyo, through Karuizawa area and Kusazu onsen.
The rain was started when we drive around Karuizawa area in a dark.
But we are so happy to met a deer on the road.
AT the time, the car drives so slow for dark, narrow and twisty road.
I thoght someone was standing on the road without flashlight.
But I found Deer was watching us.
Seconds later, she faded away.
Then passengers said Child deer is standing there.
It was heavy fog when I drive in a highest area, unable to watch the road over 10 meters, but I didn't stop the car.
It was around 5 degrees and got warning of road surface freezing.
It was kind of hard to drive in twisty and slippy narrow road with fog lights.
When I park the car, sky shows blue color among the forest.
Most of trees were painted in yellow and red.
Deep blue sky, yellow and red leaves and White birch made a picture of colors in my eyes.
This nature area gives you wonderful landscapes by each seasons.
When you visit in the middle of May, you will see very fresh green world with beautiful small lakes what is nearly walking or driving in a heaven.
