Ecuador - Mindo Birdwatching Tour
Early in the Morning, we went deeper into the cloud forest to see some of its various bird species. The jungle never stops talking and so it was on us to keep quiet and listen to the sounds of a place that offers such a density of wildlife species.
Hours before sunrise we met our very experienced guide to get even deeper into the magic of the cloud forest and its inhabitants. It was a hilarious experience led by a local who even could copy the tweets of the birds we got to see.
Being in balance with all that is happening in the Ecuadorian forest during the morning hours and to walk silently and discover colourful birds and insects made that day truly special to me. Apart from that Mindo is a cute village where life is held simple and where one could take some hours of rest while waiting for hummingbirds on their search for nectar.
People there are relaxed and friendly and even if you do not speak any Spanish you will not be alone, because all year round there are many foreign travellers or retirees that chose this little paradise their new home.
If you plan to stay longer, I recommend you to take the Tarabita-walk which will lead you to seven waterfalls in a row and a quite scary cable car across the cloudy landscape or to go rafting or for a canopy ride or visit the local shops and stop by at the butterfly farm. For the latter you should ask for when the butterflies are awake to not be disappointed.

The cloud forests of Ecuador are not awash with colour. Instead, they pick a single one and run with it.
Green isn’t just green here, it’s gob smacking, gut punching, grandstanding green, a green that explodes with greedy, reckless abandon.
A green that brings lesser sights to life, like the web of a spider or the jagged skeleton of a leaf that catches raindrops between yesterday’s green.
Ecuador Choco 2009 Part 3
Part 3 starts at Tandayapa Lodge with crimson-rumped toucanet, white-winged brush-finch, golden-olive woodpecker and female red-headed barbet. We then move up to the Upper Tandayapa Valley and see pearled tree-runner, plate-billed mountain-toucan, turquoise jay, sickle-winged guan and grass-green tanager. Next day begins at dawn, at the fantastic Paz de Aves where we have Andean cock-of-the-rock, strong-billed woodcreeper, narino tapaculo, giant antpitta, moustached antpitta, yellow-breasted antpitta, crimson-rumped toucanet, sickle-winged guan, slate-throated whitestart, olivaceous piha, velvet-purple coronet and empress brilliant. From there we move to the Chontal Road where we see female western slaty antshrike and bronze-winged parrot before going to La Cueva de las Tayas to see the oilbirds.
Hot spring - Papallacta, Ecuador, South America
Papallacta is only 1 1/2 hour (55 km) away from Quito, next to Antisana stratovolcano. On the way up to hot springs, we see a spectacular view of the paramo.
The spa resort called Las Termas de Papallacta, offers 8 thermal pools with water temperature from 30 to 45°C and 3 cold water pools with temperature of 2°C..
Papallacta is located at 3 300 meters. On a day without clouds, 5,704 metres Antisana stratovolcano is visible; a majestic sight from hot water pool.
Open everyday from 6:00 to 21:00
How to get there?
By bus take the Quito-Baeza road, than take a 1/2 h walk or take a local taxi.
For more information or to reserve lodging call Termas de Papallacta. Fresh trouts from paramo lakes are served in the local restaurants.
Personally, I consider this resort one of the nicest. One should never visit Ecuador without bathing in the hot pools of Termas de Papallacta.
