Bolgatanga is the capital of Upper East Ghana.Beautiful places to travel to game : Public bus from Accra/Kumasi/Tamale is cheap and safer than the maniac private bus drivers. It takes 3 hours from Tamale, leaving around 8am so make sure you make a bathroom stop on the lunch stop as you might not be able to otherwise.
Private car from any medium sized town with driver is only about €20 a day.

Sumbrungu Painted Houses One of the most distinctive features in the Upper East Region are the traditional villages that dot the landscape. These villages generally feature round thatched roof huts, painted with decorative motifs in striking colors. A beautiful example of traditional paintings is found in the village of Sumbrungu, eight kilometers from Bolgatanga on the way going to Paga.
The Tongo Hills and Tengzug Shrine are located in the village of Tengzug, 17 kilometers (about 10 miles) southeast of Bolgatanga. With its landscape dominated by large granite formations, the Tengzug area evolved as the sacred centre of the Talensis people, an ethnic group in Northern Ghana. The Tengzug Shrine is located in the Tongo hills and is believed to grant luck and prosperity to all those who visit it. Beware of the exorbitant price for a profoundly uninspired village tour (15 cedis), the price of which you won't be told about until afterwards.
The Tomb of Naa Bbewaa, who is the founder of the Mole-Dagbon tribes, is located in the town of Pusiga. Legend states that Naa Gbewaa never died but simply vanished during a heated battle. The shrine was thought to have been built in the 14th century in commemoration of Naa Gbewaa, and is today a place of spiritual reverence.
The Bolgatanga Library is a notable design of award-winning American architect J. Max Bond, Jr., who was influenced by Le Corbusier. Bond lived in Ghana for four years in the 1960s, escaping racism in the United States. The Bolgatanga library was his first major project while working for the national construction company. The design features perforated walls and an umbrella shaped roof, so the structure remains cool and well ventilated.
Forty kilometres (about 25 miles) from Bolgatanga, along the Burkina Faso border, is Paga, home to the Sacred Crocodile Ponds. These are purportedly the friendliest crocodiles in Ghana, and it is said that the souls of the royal family reside in them. The crocodiles roam freely throughout the ponds

Ghana - Bolgatanga (2), Upper East Region
This clip shows my last day in Bolgatanga, capital of the Upper East Region of Ghana, where I had just visited a hotel in the southern part of the city. The footage starts immediately after, driving along the main Tamale-Bolga Road, and into the centre of Bolgatanga, where you can see the junction that is the turn-off to head up to the somewhat unstable township of Bawku. However, the vehicle heads along the main road into town to the tro-tro station, of which a short segment is shown before departing, heading south this time along the Tamale-Bolga Road (as I was heading back to Tamale that day).
Pia's Palace - Paga (Upper East Region), Ghana
This clip shows Pia's Palace in Paga, in the Upper East Region of Ghana. It is part of a community-based eco-tourism project for the town, and while the town's two crocodile ponds tend to steal the show, it's really worth spending a full day in Paga to see sites such as Pia's Palace, and the Al Hassan village & old Pikworo slave encampment, which have made Paga somewhat popular amongst tourists from around the World.
The video shows my guided tour, where I got to see the old huts of the palace. It is still a living quarters today, and I was shown things like how to use the traditional cooking implements and also inside the huts.

Welcome to Bongo (Upper East region of Ghana)! Welcome or ZAARE, in their local language.. Bongo, located in Norther Ghana, close to the border of Bukina Faso has not only unique traditions, but also a unique landscape with rocks dotted all over! 2 of the makant high rocks are just in the middle of Bongo! Compaire this with the Saxonian Swizz in Germany! On top of on of the rocks is the entrance to a UNIQUE Underwater Cave! - YES, on top of the rock! The cave system is leading some KM from the top, forward to WEA dam and lake! There is some wildlife, as there are even reports of LIONS or ELEPHANTS in the past. Bongo celebrates a yearly FIRE festival December or January, depending on FULL MOON. Not far from Bongo, as written before, the border to Togo, with on of the largest markets in the region, nearby also PAGA with it`s CROCODILE PONDS. Best time to visit Bongo from December - June.

AFRICA LIBERIA THE WORST PLACE ON THE PLANET?

Liberia, officially the Republic of Liberia, is a country in West Africa bordered by Sierra Leone to its west, Guinea to its north and Ivory Coast to its east. It covers an area of 111,369 square kilometres (43,000 sq mi) and is home to about 3.7 million people. English is the official language and over thirty indigenous languages are also spoken within the country. Its coastline is composed mostly of mangroves, while its more sparsely populated inland consists of forests opening onto a plateau of drier grasslands. The climate is hot and equatorial, with significant rainfall during the May--October rainy season and harsh harmattan winds the remainder of the year. The country possesses about forty percent of the remaining Upper Guinean rainforest.
Liberia is the only country in Africa founded by United States colonization while occupied by native Africans. Beginning in 1820, the region was colonized by African Americans, most of whom were freed slaves. The colonizers (who later become known as Americo-Liberians) established a new country with the help of the American Colonization Society, a private organization whose leaders thought former slaves would have greater opportunity in Africa. African captives freed from slave ships by the British and Americans were sent there instead of being repatriated to their countries of origin. In 1847, this new country became the Republic of Liberia, establishing a government modeled on that of the United States and naming its capital city Monrovia after James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States and a prominent supporter of the colonization. The colonists and their descendants, known as Americo-Liberians, led the political, social, cultural and economic sectors of the country and ruled the nation for over 130 years as a dominant minority.
The country began to modernize in the 1940s following investment by the United States during World War II and economic liberalization under President William Tubman. Liberia was a founding member of the United Nations and the Organisation of African Unity. In 1980 a military coup overthrew the Americo-Liberian leadership, marking the beginning of political and economic instability and two successive civil wars. These resulted in the deaths of between 250,000 and 520,000 people and devastated the country's economy. A peace agreement in 2003 led to democratic elections in 2005. Today, Liberia is recovering from the lingering effects of the civil wars and their consequent economic upheaval, but about 85% of the population continue to live below the international poverty line.
Swimming in Wli Falls, Volta Region, Ghana
Today I finally got out and did something touristy for the first time in a long time. I headed into the Volta Region in Ghana to visit one of the country's biggest natural attractions Wli Falls. Wli Falls is not too far from the town of Hohoe so I took my scooter out on a day trip. Wli Falls were quite spectacular and much larger than I expected them to be. There was only a small handful of other travellers there, so I basically had the place to myself. Of course, you can't visit a waterfall without having a swim under it! After visiting the waterfall, I headed to a village to grab some lunch. I had fufu, which is a staple in the diet of most people in Ghana.
Tomorrow I'm heading out of Ghana and towards neighbouring Togo.
