Iceland Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
With a population of only 300,000, Iceland can feel like the most isolated place on earth, yet its capital Reykjavik, is only a three-hour flight from London and just under six from New York.
Reykjavik is relaxed and welcoming, yet possesses a cultural life that holds its own against other European capitals. Most buildings are built simple and low to beat the North Atlantic winds. However, the city is also graced with grand civic architecture inspired by Iceland’s natural beauty, such as the soaring central tower of Hallgrímskirkja.
Many of the country’s most popular sights are within easy reach of Reykjavík. Immerse yourself in the spirit of Iceland, at the Blue Lagoon. Then spend a day or two in The Golden Circle, an area which encompasses three of Iceland’s greatest natural wonders; Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geothermal Field, and Gullfoss.
Iceland’s main ring road strings together an endless series of epic landscapes. Less than two hours drive east of Reykjavik are two of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Continue eastward towards Vík, Iceland’s southern-most village, where you’ll find the dramatic landscapes of Black Beach, Reynisdrangar, and Dyrholaey. Follow the ring road for another two hours into the ethereal light of Jökulsárlón Lake, where icebergs break away from Europe’s largest glacier and float for years before tumbling out to sea.
Head north and feel the earth rumble at Europe’s mightiest waterfall, Dettifoss. Then explore the Myvatn region, a tranquil lake surrounded by nature in all its violent beauty. Take a careful walk through the boiling landscape of Namafjall, lose yourself amid the lava pillars of Dimmuborgir, and peer into the caldera of Krafla Volcano.
Known as the Capital of the North, Akureyri is the perfect place to warm up and enjoy some creature comforts, before heading off into the wilds again. In Iceland, every side road is a story waiting to unfold. So come, and live your own Icelandic story, it’s one you’ll keep telling for the rest of your days.

Sifnos island 4K, top beaches & sights, Cyclades Greece | Σίφνος, καλύτερες παραλίες
Sifnos, the silent power of the Cyclades.
Evocative landscapes, lively traditions and a relaxed atmosphere: high-quality holidays on the island of balance and harmony
Among the Cycladic islands, Sifnos stands out for both its architecture and natural beauty. Once a thriving gold and silver mining location, it has, since ancient times, cultivated a reputation for the finer things in life. Today the island combines the picturesque with a rich tradition in cuisine and crafts, along with a high-level infrastructure in tourism. Despite its refined culture and “Cycladic chic” ambience, Sifnos retains a low profile that instills peacefulness in the visitor.
The island offers a wide array of beaches, from Panagia Chryssopigi, where you can dive from rocky ledges, to more organized swimming at Kamares, Platys Gialos and Vathy. For those who prefer to avoid crowds there is Fykiada, accessible on foot, while if you rent a yacht or have your own the island has multiple small, secluded natural bays to enjoy.
The town of Artemon is defined by its beautiful neoclassical homes and well-tended narrow streets, while its surrounding villages stand out for their whitewashed courtyards, the deep colors of the bougainvillea and the finely crafted terracotta chimney tops on the roofs. Traditional cuisine on Sifnos includes chickpea soup made in ceramic bowls, mastelo (lamb or kid baked on vine branches) and salad with capers. A swim at the quaint little ancient port of Seralia can be followed by a seafood hors d’oeuvre, and later on by a walk up to the medieval settlement of Kastro (Castle) with the Venetian loggias to see the sunset and finally you can wrap up an eventful day with Sifnos’ rich nightlife.
Apollonia also offers plenty of choices for entertainment, as well as more traditional pursuits, especially the island’s church festivals (panigyri), which are accompanied by food for all and music – the island even has a name for locals who organize the festivals (panigyrades). If you go to the island in September, you will catch the annual Cycladic Gastronomy Festival, named after its native Nikolaos Tselementes, a renowned chef in Greece forever synonymous with the Greek cookbook.
Like a gracious cosmopolitan hostess who also follows local tradition, Sifnos is an island of opposites that work together and provides a mix of people and lifestyles without losing its balance.
Things to do on Sifnos
Trek the trail from Kastro to Eptamartyros
One visit to this conical hill, where you will find the walled mediaeval village of Kastro (Castle), will capture your imagination. Vaulted arches, mystical little chapels, stone cottages nestled behind ancient foundations. Take in the breathtaking view from the trail around the settlement towards the sea to the chapel of Eptamartyrou. Mariners love this point, as well as the port of Seralia that flourished under Frankish rule. There you can savour local delicacies in the quaint little ouzeries.
Cycladic architecture harmonising with nature
The villages of Sifnos are built in perfect harmony with each other and with the landscape. Apollonia, Artemonas, Ag Loukas, Exambelos, Katavati, Pano (Upper) and Kato (Lower) Petali, all dotted around the centre of the island like electrons around a nucleus. Here students come to learn the essentials of Cycladic architecture first hand. During your holidays here, you’ll never tire of walking around them with their cobblestone lanes and whitewashed stairways.
One for the road
Sifnos by night is a one-way road. Whatever you end up doing, you will pass through the famous street of Apollonia, teeming with restaurants, cafes, chapels, boutiques and stone dwellings with beautiful patios; an ideal setting, in fact, for sipping cocktails!
The irresistible beauty of Vathi
From the hill above Vathi, the view is like an aerial photograph. The bay with its calm, deep blue water almost forms a complete circle. St Taxiarchis, a church built in the 16th century, sits on the dock, a landmark at the edge of the beach. This picturesque port, with its sandy beach and seafood restaurants, is guaranteed to charm you.
A site of pilgrimage
At dawn, the sun rises behind the belltower of Chrysopigi Monastery, painting everything in resplendent shades of pink and orange. The 17th century monastery, built on a craggy rock, is the most important pilgrimage site on the island.

Liverpool Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Get to know Liverpool, England, where the River Mersey meets the Irish Sea. This charming city is filled with maritime history, Beatlemania, and places of worship.
Begin your English adventures at the Three Graces, which include the Royal Liver Building, Cunard Building, and Port of Liverpool Building. These iconic and architecturally magnificent structures sit in Pier Head, overlooking the River Mersey. View the buildings in all their glory at the nearby Museum of Liverpool. Then head to U-Boat Story to explore a previously sunken German submarine, followed by a trip to the Merseyside Maritime Museum, where you’ll learn boatloads of information about ships of the past, from the Titanic to the Lusitania.
As long as you’re in Liverpool, explore the fabulous four’s old stomping grounds. The Beatles played more than 300 gigs at Cavern Club, while the Casbah Coffee Club is where Beatlemania took off. To learn more about the epic band, roam around the memorabilia exhibits at The Beatles Story, a museum where you can marvel at John Lennon’s glasses and George Harrison’s first guitar. What’s more, you can visit the grave of Eleanor Rigby—who inspired the famous song—along with the bandstand that prompted the “Sergeant Peppers” album.
Still looking for more adventures? Dabble in the city’s religious side and check out the Anglican Cathedral. It was engineered by a 22-year-old architecture student who won a design contest. Afterwards, visit the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, known as “Paddy’s Wigwam,” which exudes the free spirt and charm of the 1960s. Both of these structures boast magnificent designs and are considered architectural splendors.
There’s much more to Liverpool, though. Its football fans are die-hard, while the estates, such as Sudley House and Croxteth Hall, are historical treasures. However you decide to spend your adventures in this English town, check out our Liverpool travel guide for more tips and recommendations.

St. Theodora church in Vasta Megalopolis, Arcadia, Greece
Saint Theodora of the book Guinness World Records. The church was built between 1050-1100 in honor of Martyr Theodora. Located near the village of Vasta Megalopolis in an idyllic wooded ravine with dense forest of enormous oaks. the church even though small in size impresses every visitor trying to justify the existence of the 17 towering trees on the roof without root trace at the bottom of the roof or inside the temple. Visiting Agia Theodora is a great trip on the same day from Athens. It is worth visiting the spot even as detour on the road to Kalamata.
Chrousso
This large bay is located near the villages of Paliouri and Pefkohori. It is more than 1 km in length, with fine soft sand and shallow water, making it suitable and preferred by families with children.
Part of the beach is organized, with a couple of beach bars providing sunbeds and umbrellas. The rest part has no facilities but in July and August it may get a bit crowded.
The beach of Glarokavos spreads on the east coast of Kassandra, near the village of Pefkohori. A small part of it is managed by Glarokavos beach bar but the rest is a vast area with no facilities and almost no people.
The beach is sandy, mixed with tiny pebbles, and the water is relatively shallow around the shore. Behind the beach there are big trees under which you can park your vehicle. Glarokavos ends with a lagoon used as a port for fishing boats.
Kanistro beach is on the southeast coast of Kassandra, known as one of the beaches of Paliouri village which is 1-2 km away.
The road leading to Kanistro is good and paved but usually there are not many people even during the high season. The air is very fresh due to high hills with the pine trees above the beach. Kanistro beach is about 1 km long, with sand and small pebbles around the shore. There are two beach bars operating in the summer. The closest shops and taverns are in Paliouri. Accommodation is also not available because the only buildings on the beach are part of a project with houses for sale.
The area of Agios Nikolaos is the southernmost place on Kassandra shore which can be reached by car. The name comes form the name of the small church of Agios Nikolaos which stands right above the sea.

Greece best of: Serres sights & places | Σέρρες, αξιοθέατα και μέρη
An historic town in Macedonia that knows how to have a good time
Welcome to Serres – the town in Northern Greece that’s seen it all and has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of every catastrophe it’s ever faced. What’s its secret? You’ll discover it in the enchanting Lailia Forest, in the shade from the leafy trees at Agii Anargyri. You’ll taste it in its famous sweets and in the scent of its ouzos. You’ll recognise it in its people, who fill the nights with fun and games, and in its women who are renowned for their beauty. You’ll find that Serres will keep its promise to give you a holiday to remember.
What to do in Serres
Travel to the valley of Agii Anargyri
This lovely park infuses Serres with colour and fresh air. With cascades, brooks, spreading plane trees, an artificial lake, restaurants and cafes, it’s a perfect holiday destination for walks and picnics, especially in spring and summer.
Koulas Hill
This pine-covered hill overlooking town is not just an attractive backdrop, it contains the ruins of a once mighty Byzantine acropolis. Climb up to admire the view and you’ll also see the western tower of the fortress, Orestes’ tower, which was part of the inner wall. An inscribed foundation stone dates it to 1350, during the reign of the Serbian king Stefan Dusan.
The pristine beauty of Lailia
Go just 25km north of Serres and you’ll find yourself in the Lailia Forest, 330 hectares of pine and beech forest at an altitude of 1,849m above sea level at its highest peak, which has the unusual name of Ali Baba. The forest is a genuine paradise, home to 514 types of flora. It has been declared a Natural Monument and a region of particular Natural Beauty. Enough said. Go to this corner of Macedonia and see for yourself.
Skiing or après-ski?
If you want to ski, the Serres centre’s the place to go for great slopes and even greater fun afterwards. In its bars, clubs, cafes, restaurants, ouzeris and the famous souvlaki stands, you’ll feel the pulse and join the locals in having a good time.
In the lap of the speed gods
Step on the gas and head for the Serres racecourse, the best in Greece and the Balkans. The course meets international standards and can host Formula 3000 events. International rallies take place here and, for a small fee, anyone can test their skills in their own cars or motorbikes.
Bar Hopping in Serres
Serres is serious about partying and you’ll understand why once you spend some time with the outgoing locals of this town. Bars, clubs, cafes, restaurants, ouzeries and the well-known souvlaki joints strategically situated on downtown street corners… This is where you’ll feel the pulse of the town’s vibrant social life.
The sweets of Serres
Dusted with sugar, they look like Turkish delight, but they’re quite different. They’re called akanes and what sets them apart is fresh goat butter and spring water from Lailia. For the real thing, there are a number of traditional confectionary stores in Serres that will have you drooling in no time.
The Timios Prodromos monastery
This historic monastery lies 10km northeast of Serres in a ravine on Mt Menikios. The most noteworthy attraction in the district, it was built in the 13th century.

Switzerland
I had incredible weather for my twelve night journey through Switzerland. This video begins with me landing at the Zurich Airport.
I spend the first four nights of the trip in Zurich and take several day trips from there.
On day one I spend some time in Zurich before my day trip to points East. My first stop is in the small town of Rapperswil, then there is a scenic drive through the countryside and the excursion concludes at Heidiland.
Road trip number two takes me into the heart of the Swiss Alps. I visit Lungerersee Lake, Aare Gorge, Grimsel Pass, Furka Pass, Rhone Glacier, Devil's Bridge, Suworow Monument and the William Tell Monument.
My final road trip from Zurich took me north to Rhine Falls.
Next is was a scenic train ride to St. Moritz where I spent the night at a small Swiss hotel. From there I took another scenic train ride, this one was on the Bernina Express.
The next day was an incredible all-day rail journey on the famous Glacier Express to Zermatt. The train is described as the world's slowest express train.
I spent two nights in car-free Zermatt. The highlight of which was the spectacular cable car trip up the Klein Matterhorn. The views of the Matterhorn were breathtaking on this crystal clear day. I also spent some time walking through the charming Swiss town.
After changing trains in Visp it was on to Geneva for one night. Here we had a nice tour of this metropolitan city.
Next I took the scenic Golden Pass train to Interlaken. In Interlaken I took the Jungfrau Railway to the highest railway station in Europe located just below the mighty peaks of Eiger, Jungfrau and Mönch. This trip was incredible.
After changing trains in the capital city of Bern, I arrived in Lucerne for the final four nights of the trip. Lucerne is a perfect place to stay. The city couldn't be more pictureesque.
In Lucerne I enjoyed a Swiss folklore show, rode the funicular and tramway to the top of Mount Stanserhorn, took a horse-drawn carriage ride through the Swiss countryside, rode the cable car to the top of Mount Pilatus, rode the world's steepest railway down from Mount Pilatus, took a boat ride across Lake Lucerne and walked across the historic Chapel Bridge in the city's Old Town.
Lastly the trip concludes with my flight out of Zurich. I got a particularly nice view of the airport during takeoff.

Agios Gordios, Corfu
* * *
* * *
