Good Wine shop in Global City Metro Manila offers vintage French wines
Wine Shop opens at Global City in Enderun College, McKinley Hill
It was a small party right outside the small wine shop that just opened on Saturday 30th June, 2012 on the second floor of Enderun College. That shop was a book and accessories shop before hundreds of bottles of wine invaded the place and took over most of its shelves.
Characterized by some as a corner convenience wine store, this is the first retail wine outlet of Yats Wine Cellars in Manila. It is supposed to serve a special purpose.
This kind of tiny corner wine stores is designed to plug a small hole in the wine market. It addresses the need for wine lovers to pick up a few bottles of ready-to-drink vintage wines that are not excessively expensive, to bring to a friend's dinner or to relax and unwind at home over the weekend. Most of the time, this would be a last-minute spur-of-the-moment kind of shopping. A friend might have called up just a few hours earlier inviting you over for some nice steaks they bought fresh from the market. Or you decided to take some business associates out for dinner in a restaurant that serves really nice food but sadly, as often is the case in Manila, has a not-so-really-nice wine list. In any case, the intention is really to pick up a couple of bottles to enjoy this evening or this weekend.
Supermarkets attend to the demand for economy wines for everyday enjoyment. Fancy wine shops cater to the need of wine lovers searching for famous labels mostly to throw into their cellars to age for several more years before uncorking. Somewhere between the two lies these neighborhood wine shops that sell wines that are for personal enjoyment, bottles like 1995 St. Emilion for php2900, a 2009 Bordeaux for 950 or a 2007 Chianti Reserva for php1,900.
It was raining cats and dogs outside but nobody paid any attention to that because we were all preoccupied with drinking wines, talking about wines and neutralizing the acidity buildup in the stomach with generous helpings of 10 selections of cheeses. Many were taken by surprise by my choice of Mencia-based wines from Bierzo to represent Spain in the four-region line-up. Although the French wines were quickly poured, it was the Chianti Classico and the Chianti Reserva that got good reviews also. However the winner was the 1994 Graham Vintage Port that was served on a separate table along with English Stilton and a variety of other blue cheeses.
