Xianju Home of the Immortals, with a cultural heritage stretching back an amazing estimated 5-7000 years. According to recent archaeological discoveries, along with the Neolithic Tang (唐) and Hemudu (河姆渡) geographical regions; Xian Ju (仙居) represents a true encounter with the early dawn of Chinese civilization.
Xianju is also the modern center of Chinese Waxberry Alcohol production (杨梅酒). 杨梅 (waxberry) alcohol has a deceptively smooth taste- think Kool Aid with a ‘kick', but DO NOT let the delectable, smooth taste fool you. Too many glasses of 杨梅酒 will put you under the table, quicker than you can say “Hey Kool Aid!” followed by some intense worship of the proverbial porcelain god. Perhaps that's why slowed neurons on day two gave me the bright idea to go swimming in the icy cold Pujiang River (蒲江河). All captured on camera by my brother and cameraman par excellence Yu Kan.

The Chinese government no longer denies social security to Nationalist army veterans who fought alongside the Chinese Communists in World War II. For many, recognition has come too late
AFTER driving for over an hour on the morning of Aug. 7, members of a delegation from the Taizhou Chamber of Commerce in Shenzhen arrived at Zhang Lixu's house in Xianju County, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province. They found him lying on a wooden bed with his wife. The house was dark, shabby and smelled of urine. Medicine, food and daily goods were scattered everywhere.
The 90-year-old man is one of the 90 Kuomingtang (KMT) war veterans still alive in Taizhou. Each one participated in the Anti-Japanese War (1937-1945).
Due to health problems, Zhang has very poor eyesight and is unable to sit up straight, while his wife has been disabled for many years. Without any income, they have to rely on food from their neighbors to survive.
He has two sons. One is living in a three-floor building in the same village, but neither is willing to take care of their parents, said Lin Huaqiang, a local traffic policeman who has been assisting the surviving war veterans in Taizhou since 2006.
Lin said that the living conditions of the KMT veterans varies and is largely dependent on the attitudes of their children. In the same village as Zhang, a 93-year-old KMT veteran Zhang Zhinuan is taken good care of by his family.
Most of the KMT veterans returned home after the War Against Japanese Aggression ended in 1945, but suffered poverty because of their service in KMT military forces.
There are no official statistics for the accurate number of KMT veterans still alive on the Chinese mainland, but a nongovernmental organization said the number should be less than 20,000.
Taizhou Chamber of Commerce in Shenzhen is one of many organizations in China that began to focus on the plight of KMT veterans.
In 2009, a special website was established to help, which currently has over 40,000 registered volunteers. In March a foundation was also established for the former KMT veterans and so far has collected over 2 million yuan in donations so far.
The veterans are mostly aged over 90 years old, and are likely to die within the next five years, so we have to be quick in helping them, said Zhang Chenghua who led the Taizhou Chamber of Commerce in Shenzhen during the visit.
This was the second time that they had visited Taizhou to help the veterans. Last year, the group gave 2,000 yuan (US$326) to each of 59 KMT veterans.
This year they brought with them fruit and money but Zhang said that the amount of money received would vary according to the veterans' living situation, with the donations ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 yuan.
After a brief conversation, they left Zhang and drove to Taizhou Bo'ai Hospital to visit 95-year-old Wang Fayun, who was there having treatment for brain cancer. Less than a month ago, Wang was sent home from Huangyan People's Hospital due to a lack of money.
After hearing about Wang's problem, Zhang Chenghua immediately transferred 10,000 yuan from his personal bank account and sent him to a better hospital for treatment, said Ying Xinfei, owner of a small printing factory in Taizhou and leader of a group of volunteers in the city.
Chen Guoqing, president of the hospital, said that any additional medical expenses exceeding the 10,000 yuan, would be covered by the hospital.
This generous activity has caught the attention of people in other parts of China. Zhang Yijie, a businessman in Taizhou, said that last year he was asked, by a friend of his in Foshan, to visit the veterans with money, rice and oil. He stressed however that KMT veterans needed social recognition more than material rewards.
China's Ministry of Civil Affairs issued a document in June this year, which ruled that KMT veterans could have access to welfare and medical aid, it also encouraged social organizations to help remaining veterans.
Ying said that the greatest difficulty faced by them is a lack of financial support, and he wished that there was more involvement at all levels of society because the group needed to be known and respected while they are still alive.
