Star Trails Build Up Behind Palm Trees at Corn Springs, California
The last in my Corn Springs series until my next visit to this location.
I used StarStaX to create these star trails from 375 frames each shot with a Canon 6D and Mitakon 35mm f/2 lens at f/2.8 8 sec ISO 3200. I chose the option to save an image file progressively as the star trails were built. This is the result. Background music as a small sample of a dark version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star by The Chocolate Chips.
Corn Springs is a palm oasis situated in the Chuckwalla Mountains of the Colorado Desert in Riverside County, California, United States, seventeen miles southeast of Desert Center. Native Americans relied on the springs, and they engraved many petroglyphs on the rocks in the area. In the late 19th century, miners in the area also relied on the springs, and they established the Corn Springs Mining District in 1897.
The springs were used for thousands of years by nomadic Native Americans. The Chemehuevi, Desert Cahuilla and Yuma bands frequented the spring and carved elaborate petroglyphs in the nearby rocks. Some of the oldest rock art is over 10,000 years old. At times, there was enough surface water for gardening by the springs. The Indians also utilized the fruit of the palms.
Early white visitors found feral corn plants in the vicinity, giving the spring its present name.

Hiking Day 4: Carrizo Canyon, Palm Desert
Hiking Day 4: Carrizo Canyon Ecological Reserve, Palm Desert
When a trail is only available to hikers a few months a year, you need to include it on your hiking list. Due to bighorn lambing (breeding) season, this trail is only open October, November and December. Ironically, the trailhead is a just five- minute drive from the bustling El Paseo shopping district, but you would never know it once you enter the pristine wilderness. The hike begins through a wide sandy wash filled with smoke trees, creosote bushes and desert willows. Once you enter the mouth of the canyon, keep your eye out for the elusive bighorn sheep that blend with nature’s beauty. You have a really good chance of spotting one. Cholla and barrel cactus line the canyon walls; a lone California fan palm is the perfect spot for resting before moving on to explore the falls, which are mostly dry unless we’ve had a recent rainfall. You can scramble the side of the first falls and explore several others to a small palm oasis.
Quick facts: 3 miles; moderate hike; approximately 2 hours
Insider tips: No dogs allowed; closed January through September.

Mexican Hacienda! Saltwater Pool, Hot Tub, Cabana & Roof Deck, Sprawling Grounds
The Unique Benefits at this House:
As a guest at The End of the Trail, you don't have to drive to go for a walk or hike in a beautiful spot, it's right out your door. I love the view from the pool! I love that we can use the home year-round and enjoy different aspects. The property is so large, you can easily spend all day there with friends or parents and not feel like you're on top of each other. I love that there is a play area for our kids and dog. I am looking forward to spending many happy days of my life, lounging on the roof deck and reading in that casita! I have always dreamed of having a home with pool and hot tub! October-November and February-March are 'said' to be the best time to go to the desert, also it's lovely in mid-late September and April-May. June-July-August can be over 100 degrees every day with August being the hottest month, although we have air conditioning and fans and we have the top of the line full pool mister system installed to help with the heat. December and January can be cooler at night but significantly warmer than northern climes and pleasant during daytime (think shorts or light slacks with a fleece sweater), affording wonderful time for tennis, golf and hiking, not to mention shopping and tourist attractions such as Joshua Tree, the Date Plantation, going olive oil tasting, to the limoncello cafe, tasting scrumptious foods at area restaurants and toasting (poolsafe glasses) in the hot tub. Sometimes there is wind or even a little rainshower, but are very popular months in the desert for northerners to escape colder temperatures. All months are mostly sunny!
