Race and the Blues in Saint Louis: The Present 2/11/18 (pt 1 of 2)
(part 2:
KDHX and the St. Louis Blues Society present “Race and the Blues in
St. Louis” community dialogue series, featuring conversations designed to cultivate understanding around race relations as they pertain to the blues. This series will provide the context and tools to enable a continuing, constructive dialogue in the music community and bring people together by celebrating the legacy and future of the blues in St. Louis.
The Present: Reality of the Blues features panelists Gene Dobbs Bradford (Executive Director of Jazz St. Louis, John May (Owner/Operator of BB's Jazz Blues and Soups), and Dion Brown (former Executive Director of the National Blues Museum)
Conversations are led by Dr. Rosalind (Roz) Norman, professor of business at Webster University, former National Blues Museum interpretative coordinator, member of Cinema St. Louis and other artist guilds, and producer of media projects for Double Helix and various sources. Ample time will be allowed for audience participation.
By organizing this program, KDHX and the St. Louis Blues Society hope to shine a light on these issues, move the conversation forward, and help us all navigate a difficult and sometimes uncomfortable topic.

Michael Burks Salty Tears.wmv
Mr. Burks died on May 6, 2012. In tribute to the world's finest bluesman, I'll be uploading some live recordings from BB's Jazz, Blues, and Soups in St. Louis, Missouri, USA along with some pictures I've taken. This recording was done in 2010 and features Wayne Sharp on the Hammond B-3; Chuck Popcorn Louden on drums; and sorry, but the bass player's name escapes me.
Michael Burks has been the finest blues guitar player for, easily, the past 9 years. If you failed to attend one of his shows, you've missed out: THREE hour sets with a 10min break and then another hour or two. Incredible. Simply incredible.
