California Marker - San Francisco's Barbary Coast Trail
Barbary Coast Trial Markers -
From the days of the Gold Rush and the Barbary Coast, to the 1906 earthquake and the Beat renaissance, San Francisco's history is rich with dynamic events and storied characters. The Barbary Coast Trail is a San Francisco walking tour that connects the City's most important historic sites, drawing you into a world of gold seekers and railroad barons, writers and visionaries, shanghiers and silver kings.
A series of bronze medallions and arrows embedded in the sidewalk connect the Barbary Coast Trail's historic sites. Along a 3.8-mile path (mostly flat or gently sloping), the trail weaves its way through Downtown, Union Square, Chinatown, Portsmouth Square, Jackson Square Historic District, Old Barbary Coast, Beat San Francisco, North Beach, Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower, Fishermans Wharf, San Francisco Martime Historical National Park, Ghirardelli Square and Nob Hill.

Walking Tour of Historical Barbary Coast (San Francisco Highlights)
A great way to explore Chinatown and adjoining North Beach is to follow the Barbary Coast Historical Trail. The Barbary Coast Trail is a walking tour that connects 20 major historic sites and museums that give you a glimpse into the wild and woolly gold boom days of San Francisco. There are 180 bronze medallions embedded into the sidewalks that point you to major POIs along the trail so you can theoretically do your own walking tour…but it’s so much more fun to have a local show you around. And in this case, a 200 year old one! I'm joined on my tour by the incomparable Countess Lola Montez of Landsfeld.

San Francisco's Barbary Coast Tour
The Barbary Coast Trail
The Barbary Coast Trail is marked with over 150 bronze medallions embedded into the sidewalk all over San Francisco. In following the trail, you pass some of the citys best known landmarks, and get introduced to all new ones. Join me on todays adventure as I set out to film all the medallions and take in the citys atmosphere. I filmed most of the medallions on the regular Trail. However there is a detour section which avoids a large staircase and is designated for adventurers who use a wheelchair. I only lost the trail once, just before getting to Pier 31, where the Wheelchair detour rejoins the Trail. The indicator points toward the Pier area near Alcatraz Landing, however after 40 minutes of searching I was unable to find a medallion in that area. I knew the Trail passed in front of Pier 39 so I headed that way and rejoined the Trail there. The Trail passes quite a few restaurants and things to see. The Trail does pass through many different many different areas of San Francisco, however I never felt unsafe. The Trail website claims its length is just under 4 miles and there are some steep hills. It is after all, San Francisco. This is a great day hike!

Chinatown 1848, Madams of the Barbary Coast Documentary
Archival photos, illustrations and dramatizations portraying San Francisco Chinatown in the 1800's from the award winning documentary Madams of the Barbary Coast, recently broadcast for Women's History Month on PBS. These excerpts were cut to the Barbary Coast soundtrack Chinatown by Rodney Frias.
Madams of the Barbary Coast is a historical documentary about some of the more colorful and provocative Madams, courtesans, and other women pioneers who settled the wild frontier town of early San Francisco. Told through a series of poignant and touching stories, these courageous female entrepreneurs and women of questionable virtue find passion, intrigue, murder, sex and redemption as they bring culture and beauty to one of the most dangerous and notoriously depraved places in history. Broadcast on PBS station for Women's History Month.

Top TV, Movie, Rock n Roll & Society Victorian Houses In San Francisco
One of my all-time favorite things to do is go on open houses and lookey-loo at where rich people live; especially the famous ones. San Francisco has its own version of L.A.’s star tours — but instead of plush Malibu canyon homes, ours are the grand Victorians of the 1800s. And since I feel like doing some house touring today, let’s hit some of the top famous Victorians in San Francisco.
