Calf Creek Falls | Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument 4K
#grandstaircaseescalante #grandstaircasehikes #calfcreek
The trail to Calf Creek Falls may be the most popular hike in Utah's Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It's a stunning trek through stunning desert canyons capped by one of the prettiest waterfalls we've encountered.
Along with Bears Ears, Grand Staircase-Escalante may be the most contested swath of public land in the United States.
With recent reductions and the desire of many for a full restoration of the original monument boundaries being hotly debated it's never been more important to Leave No Trace.
The ultimate fate of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is uncertain. With limited resources to protect the land, it is essential for all visitors to do their best to leave this desert wonderland as pristine as possible.
What are your thoughts? Should the reductions stand or should Utah's monuments be restored? Leave a comment below.

Lower Calf Creek Falls - Scenic Byway 12 - Utah - LeAw in the USA //Ep.39
We are living the American dream driving the Historic Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica but we are doing some detours to visit some places we like.
In this 39th episode, we hit the road again. Lucky LeAw, our old vintage 1990 Ford F-250 4x4 truck camper, is fixed.
We visit Calf Creek Falls and drive all Scenic Byway 12 Route. Enjoy the ride with us! ;)
Calf Creek Falls is a perennial waterfall in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah that totals 214 feet (65 m). The lower tier is a 126-foot (38 m) cascade and is very popular, because it can be reached by an easy hike on a 5½ mile roundtrip trail. The upper tier is a 88-foot (27 m) plunge and is much less known, as it requires a 1-mile (1.6 km) scramble past the lower falls.
Named for its use as a natural pen for calves back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the creek remained relatively unknown as a tourist destination until the formation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, under the Clinton administration. Walking between mineral-streaked cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, hikers pass beaver ponds and pre-historic rock art sites en route to the paradisiacal pools.
The trailhead is located at the Calf Creek Campground on Highway 12, 11 miles south of the town of Boulder, and 15 miles east of the town of Escalante. The highway follows the route of the creek for most of the distance, atop the bluff to the east of the canyon.
Calf Creek Campground: Located at the campground in the Calf Creek Recreational Area, there is a parking fee for the parking lot, and a camping fee in order to stay overnight. The trail sets off to the north, away from the campground. Though mostly level, the trail frequently crosses vast sandy tracts that can make it difficult for some to navigate. About a mile and a half up the canyon, on the east wall quite high up rest two Fremont granaries and a group of pictograph panels, dated to approximately AD 1200.
State Route 12 or Scenic Byway 12 (SR-12), also known as Highway 12 — A Journey Through Time Scenic Byway, is a state highway designated an All-American Road located in Garfield County and Wayne County, Utah, United States.
Proceeding west to east for 122 miles (nearly 200 km), the highway starts south of Panguitch at an intersection with US-89, crosses part of Dixie National Forest and Bryce Canyon National Park, continues through the small towns of Tropic, Cannonville, and Henrieville. It crosses various parts of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument (GS-ENM), continues northeast through Escalante and over the Escalante River, then north through more of GS-ENM, Boulder, the Aquarius Plateau, Grover, ending in Torrey at an intersection with SR-24, five miles (8 km) west of Capitol Reef National Park. The 30-mile (48 km) long portion of the highway that ascends and descends Boulder Mountain on the Aquarius Plateau is known as Boulder Mountain Highway.

Fall Break - Escalante, Utah
This past October, while my kids had their fall break from school, I took the family down for a night of camping and adventuring around Escalante, Utah. Features of the trip included Upper Calf Creek, Devils Garden, dinosaur tracks, Petrified Forest State Park, and Anasazi State Park.
Calf Creek Falls
Produced and edited by Utah.com. Calf Creek Falls is a southern Utah landmark and the major feature of the BLM's Calf Creek Recreation Area. Walking between mineral-streaked cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, hikers pass beaver ponds and pre-historic rock art sites enroute to the 126-foot-high Lower Calf Creek Falls.
Roundtrip distance to the falls is 5-1/2 miles. While little elevation change is encountered, most of the trail is sandy, and can be very strenuous walking, particularly in warm weather. However, the falls area, once reached, is a delightfully cool, shady haven well worth the effort.

Everett Ruess and Escalante Canyons: Calf Creek Falls
Calf Creek flows into the Escalante River just below lower Calf Creek Falls. There is no evidence that Everett Ruess ever visited Calf Creek falls, but the canyon is typical of ones he would have encountered in the Escalante region just before he disappeared in November 1934. The falls are a nice plus for a refreshing hike!
Quotations are excerpted from Everett's final letter to his brother from Escalante, and from the poem Wilderness Song, as published in the volume edited by W.L. Rusho, Everett Ruess: A Vagabond for Beauty.
Background music is the Courante from J.S. Bach's G Major Cello Suite transcribed for and played on the Viola.

Lower Calf Creek Falls
Ben Starr takes you Lower Calf Creek Falls, hidden in the vast red-rock deserts of southern Utah in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Desert waterfalls have always intrigued me. They are havens for life in an otherwise inhospitable environment. Accessible by an easy 3-mile hike (each way), this location is surprisingly popular despite its remoteness. A superb campground is located at the trailhead. The canyon is filled with Anasazi ruins, some of which are pointed out on the trail guide, but some of which are secret and only revealed to the intrepid explorer. To avoid the crowds, I highly recommend a sunset hike mid-week...just don't forget to bring a few flashlights for the hour-long return hike!
