Hole In The Rock Road, Utah - Escalante to Lake Powell
Like Drivelapse? Friend it!
Ready to spend an entire day in one of the most remote corners of the USA? Take a drive down Hole In The Rock Road and end up 56 miles from the nearest pavement. Hole In The Rock Road cuts into the heart of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, to a dead-end, high above Lake Powell, a.k.a. the Colorado River.
That dead-end was a major obstacle for early Mormon settlers. They needed to cross the river, in order to settle the land on the opposite side. The only way down to the river was to build an almost-vertical road, by blasting away rock in a narrow slot in the cliff, then lowering their wagons down by rope.
Nowadays, it's impossible to imagine that their mission was successful. It's quite a feat just to make it to the end of the road in a regular vehicle (though it can be done without 4-wheel-drive). The rewards for driving this road are immense -- you get to see an other-worldly corner of Utah, and experience overwhelming solitude.

Hole-In-The-Rock Escalante Heritage Center - Escalante, UT - 2014
Dedication for the new Escalante/Hole-in-the-Rock Heritage Center was May 28, 2011, Memorial Day weekend. The new center offers information on the Hole-In-The-Rock/San Jan Expedition as well as murals by local artist Lynn Griffin depicting the journey down through the hole. Visit the center's small cabin and watch The Journey of the San Juan Pioneers, an overview of the Hole-in-the-Rock trek 1879-1880. There is also a clean restroom, picnic areas and a large parking lot for cars and buses. The sight is wheel chair accessible.
Driving the Burr Trail Road to Notom - Grand Staircase Escalante NM and Capitol Reef NP
In this video I drive from Boulder, UT, along the Scenic Hwy 12, down the Burr Trail Road to the Burr Trail Switchbacks, then down to the Notom-Bullfrog Road, and head north to Notom on the eastern side of Capitol Reef National Park.
Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument is one of the most beautiful places in Utah, but much of it is being threatened by mining and oil rigs, which breaks my heart. Once a place is protected, it should stay protected. I hope you will joing me in protecting this incredible land.

Nate and Steph are a couple of crazy adventurers who decided that life was too short to spend their time and money accumulating stuff. So, they set out in an RV in January 2016 to travel North America and replace their stuff with experiences. In March 2017, they sold their RV and bought a Sprinter Van, which they built out into a campervan to continue their travels and adventures in #vanlife style.
Both originally from the small town of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Nate and Steph enjoy learning about new cultures and experiencing different ways of life across the world. They like to meet new people from all walks of life and just sit and have a beer with whoever shows up. It's all about spontaneity in this life!
They travel with their two pups, Pyros and Sparta, who have become great travelers and adventure pups as well.

Patti M.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Close to Grand Staircase Escalante, private, open, free.
The site is on BLM land. Pack it in and pack it out. No amenities. Free. I liked this place. It was large area, open and clean. It is easy to find. From Highway 12, go south about a quarter mile on Hole in the Rock road. Then you will come onto three paths to take. Take the most east path and this will get you to the BLM lands. From there you will spot lots of rock fire rings to park near. Really there was lots of space to pick from. The drive on Highway 12 is incredibly scenic and beautiful. The ranger at the visitor center in the town Escalante told us this area is called Tin Can because of all the RVs the are sometimes there. We did have to get a permit, which we usually don't have to, at the visitor center. The permit is free. The area is open with lots of pinyon pine and juniper trees around. The ground is level. Plenty of privacy. Being so close to Grand Staircase Escalante was a plus. That area of Utah is well worth the time to see. We took a hike to a waterfall in the National Monument.

Hiking to Phipps Arch is one the premier destination points in Escalante Utah and finding Phipps Arch is not easy. There are many starting places to Phipps Canyon and then occasional scrabbling is required. See if you think Phipps Arch is worth the effort.

Yellow Rock - Grand Staircase Escalante

Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons Escalante, Utah.
Zebra and Tunnel Slot Canyons in Escalante, Utah are unique. The banding in the sandstone in Zebra is not like many other slots. The colors are different and nature's design is one of a kind.
Although the canyon is very short it has a lot to offer to the photographer. A crow has taken up residence and made quite a mess down one wall but we did not find it in the way. Another hiker who was there early in the morning commented on the racket the bird was making.
Since this slot is so short and you return the way back down the canyon it may be a good idea to travel in and out in small groups. In other words take turns so everyone can enjoy and photograph. There is little to no room in this narrow gulch.
Tunnel is not that photogenic. It is just like the name, more of a tunnel with little light. It has a spooky feel to it. There was waste deep water when I was there and it was very cold. The trip is only a few hundred feet long. I found it to be quite fun.
One thing that stands out about this trip is the walk to and from. It is a very pretty hike. Another thing I found interesting was the Moki marbles or balls that litter the wash.
