Sturgis South Dakota Motorcycle Rally 2018
Hey you guys! Thanks for joining me on another journey. I am in South Dakota again this week, but this time for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. We started out the day in Deadwood, a cool old western town that is known for the famous gunfighter, Wild Bill Hickock's murder on August 2, 1876. The brick roads & preserved architecture make for an appealing ride/walk around town. It is definitely a popular place during Sturgis; so many cool motorcycles and interesting people! This is a place you must visit when going to the motorcycle rally. Another must is Spearfish Canyon. That is an amazing ride! We stopped at Bridal Veil Falls, which is right off the road with plenty of motorcycle parking. We finally made it to downtown Sturgis, and what a madhouse it was--in a good way, of course! ;-) So much going on with thousands & thousands of motorcycles and people of all walks of life. We explored the streets and enjoyed people watching. There were some pretty bad-ass custom bikes to check out! I loved seeing the dogs; they were so cute. A motorcycle rally is definitely a cultural experience all its own! A lot of fun, for sure.

Deadwood SD - Bullock Hotel Seths Cellar EVP
During our night vision session in the Deadwood's haunted Bullock Hotel basement (aka Seth's Cellar), We had a static night vision camera pointed at the doorway where John Juso (see Ghost Adventures episode Halloween Special: Deadwood: City of Ghosts) saw a full bodied apparition of Seth Bullock.
In this clip, after Vikki walks through the door to shoot some video with her phone, you hear at +00:07 a male EVP saying the Door is Open. The context makes sense since she had just walked through the open door.
LET’S GO – SOUTH DAKOTA | Beautiful Destinations
Visit The USA (@VisitTheUSA) and a group of top travel creators and influencers from around the world — Alyssa Lynch (@AlyssaLynch), Lauren Bullen (@Gypsea_Lust), Jack Morris (@DoYouTravel), Jordan Hammond (@JordHammond), Jacob Riglin (@Jacob), Max Muench (@MuenchMax), Hayley Vincent (@Hayley_), and Sophia Pope (@SophiaPope) launched the #UnitedStories campaign from the geographical center of the country: Belle Fourche, South Dakota.
While South Dakota may be known as The Mount Rushmore State, there’s so much more to explore in this Midwestern jewel than rock faces and prairie lands. Steeped in Native American history and fresh with the footprints of legendary pioneers, it offers something for history buffs, adventure-seekers, and culture vultures, alike. Draw inspiration from the great American road trip, rent a classic car, check out the itinerary below, and follow the open road for this untamed state’s hidden gems.
Friday
The best way to take in this part of the country is from behind the wheel of a classic American car. Set off on an hour drive down I-90 to your first stop: Deadwood, the epitome of the wild, wild west. This historic gold-mining town nestled in the Black Hills offers everything from horse sanctuaries to hiking, mining museums to iconic casinos, so take your pick for a packed day. After a long day in the gold gulch, the road is calling once again. Head south on US-385 through the dense green of Black Hills National Forest, towards President Calvin Coolidge’s “Summer White House” — the State Game Lodge in Custer.
Saturday
Start your day at sunrise with Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln — only a 40-minute drive from Custer. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum’s stone masterpiece — the majestic Mount Rushmore National Memorial — has become a beloved symbol of America, and seeing the early golden light sweep across the founding fathers’ faces is enough to make anyone a morning person. When your jaws have sufficiently dropped, let the good times roll in Badlands National Park. 1.5 hours east of Rushmore, the rugged beauty of the national park inspires adventure, and her maze of buttes, spires, and pinnacles provide a striking backdrop to a hike or scenic drive. By now it’s mid-afternoon, and there’s only one place to quench your thirst, satiate your curiosity, and have lunch — Wall Drug. The quirky little roadside attraction is situated just outside Badland’s northern gateway. The pharmacy-come-rest stop earned much of its fame from a self-promotion scheme started by original owners Dorothy and Ted Hustead. Billboards advertising the establishment and “FREE ICE WATER” to thirsty travelers can be seen throughout South Dakota, its neighboring states, and as far as Morocco, Amsterdam, and London, informing commuters that Wall Drug is only a few thousand kilometers away.
Sunday
Spend your final morning in Custer at one with nature and gear up for a game drive in the park. Keep your eyes peeled for celebrity state critters — pronghorns, elk, and buffalo. Before heading back to Rapid City, let your last stop be as awe-inspiring as it is important. Half an hour from the State Game Lodge in the heart of the beautiful Black Hills stands another stone masterpiece in the making — Crazy Horse Memorial. In 1948, Polish-American mountain carver Korczak Ziolkowski began sculpting the colossal tribute. Since his passing in 1982, multiple generations of his family have taken over, wielding the chisel and etching the family’s legacy. In its evolving glory — including a museum, a cultural center, and The Indian University of North America — it preserves the heritage of Native Americans and celebrates the heroic acts of Tasunke “Crazy Horse” Witco of the Oglala Lakota tribe. If completed as planned, it will be the world’s second tallest sculpture at a whopping 563 feet high and depict the war leader riding a horse and pointing into the distance.

Buffalo Woman
Buffalo Woman by Paul Goble. Age Range: 5 - 8 years --Grade Level: Kindergarten - 3
The story of buffalo woman comes from the tribes who followed the buffalo herds on the Great Plains. The buffalo was the source of life for the people, giving them food, hides for robes and tipi covers, as well as many other things. The lives of bother were closely interwoven, and the story teaches that buffalo and people were related. The stories varied from tribe to tribe, but this deep sense of kinship with the buffalo was the same for the Blackfeet living in the north (Montana), as it was for the Comanche in the south (Texas). These stories were not simply for entertainment; they had power to strengthen the bond with the herds, and to encourage the herds to continue to give themselves so that the people could live. It was felt that retelling the story had power to bring about a change within each of us: that in listening we might all be a little more worthy of our buffalo relatives. --Paul Goble, 1987
Paul Goble is an award winning author and illustrator of children's books. He has won both the Caldecott Medal and The Library of Congress' Children's Book of the Year Award. To date, Mr. Goble has illustrated over 30 books. He has given his entire collection of original illustrations to the South Dakota Art Museum in Brookings, South Dakota. Goble, a native of England, studied at the Central School of Art in London. He has lived in the United States since 1977 and became a citizen in 1984. Goble's life-long fascination with Native Americans of the plains began during his childhood when he became intrigued with their spirituality and culture. His illustrations accurately depict Native American clothing, customs and surroundings in brilliant color and detail. Goble researches ancient stories and retells them for his young audiences in a manner sympathetic to Native American ways. Goble lives with his wife in Rapid City, SD.
Around Kansas - Story of Battle Canyon - May 18, 2016
(Deb) While I wrestle the alligator, Marlin over here is going to [laughs] I had to that give away your age and if you're talking about Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. (Frank) I was pretending to read a book here. (Frank) So I’m going to, [chuckles] present it again. (Deb) My lovely assistant. (Frank) Tell us about this. (Deb) Okay. This is a fantastic book. Ramon Powers. Many of you know Ramon was former Director of the Kansas State Historical Society before he retired. Native of Gove County. So he grew up in the middle of all this history. And Jim Leiker wrote this great book on the Northern Cheyenne. Now remember the movie Cheyenne Autumn? (Frank) [Hmm-hmm] (Deb) Okay. That's based on this incident. So the book talks about how this Cheyenne exodus, where the Cheyenne have been moved to Oklahoma and they're trying to get back to their native home in Northwestern Nebraska and that area right around Rapid City in South Dakota, a little South of there. So as they're coming through Kansas in 1878, with the raids. So, the one we're going to talk about today, the piece of that is the Battle of Punished Woman's Fork, which is just outside of Scott City, it's just there next to the lake. I had never been there until just this month or a few weeks ago, last month maybe. Dr. Jake took me out see it and I'm embarrassed to say I had not been to Battle Canyon before. And you've got to see it, you will be blown away. It's a fantastic site and the history is very tragic, as many of our Indian War stories are, but really important and the community there is doing an awful lot to interpret that and they got the El Quartelejo Museum in Scott City which helps interpret that history and the State Park there and there's just so much going on. So it's a fantastic place to go spend a day. And again, get some exercise during the spring and learn some fantastic history. Now Frank might actually read the book instead of just pretending to read. (Frank) Yes. I’m going to read this and she'll tell you the story. (Deb) Driving along Highway 83, North of Scott City, the prairie breaks into occasional bluffs, the grass is short and yucca dots the landscape. Even with these hints however, you can't help but gasp when you turn off the road to the West and drive down into historic Scott Lake State Park. Yes, down, the road winds down the hillside. The scenery and abundant wildlife, the sunrises and sunsets over the lake, the incredible history within its confines all beckon in the visitor to stay awhile. This corner of Kansas has many stories to tell. And today I will share just one, the Battle At Punished Woman's Fork in 1878. There are enough tragic stories in the annals of the Plains Indian Wars to fill volumes. Sadly this story is among them. The Northern Cheyenne had been moved from Northwestern Nebraska and bordering South Dakota to the Indian Territory. Conditions were deplorable and they decided to go home. Historian John Monnett calls it an Exodus, as we refer to the Children of Israel fleeing Egypt. Most Kansans of the day called it something else. The Dodge City Times covered skirmishes with the band of Cheyennes in their neighborhood. The red devils, the wild and hungry Cheyennes commit murder and arson. Several herders murdered. A house burned down. Wholesale stealing of horses, an Indian fight. Three soldiers killed and three wounded. The border wild with excitement. Straggling bands of Indians, raiding everywhere. Another Indian skirmish, an Indian killed, a soldier wounded. Emigrant trains robbed. Four companies of cavalry ordered to Dodge. I will not do the disservice of using that event to a couple of lines here. Let it be said Louis was mortally wounded and died en route to Fort Wallace and the Indians horse herd was destroyed. A devastating blow. The most significant effect however, lay in the attitudes on both sides, leading to pressure from the public for real protection. And a more violent and personal response from Dull Knife and his followers resulting in the brutal raid near Oberlin. This is a story you must experience. Visit Punish Woman's Fork adjoining Historic Scott Lake State Park. Visit the Gerry Thomas Gallery at the El Quartelejo Museum in Scott City where you will find photos and artifacts, along with Gerry's incredible art. Visit the Last Indian Raid Museum in Oberlin. Read the Northern Cheyenne Exodus in History and Memory by Jim Leiker and Ramon Powers. Read Tell Them We Are Going Home by John Monnett. The story is far too rich and complex for sound bites. But I will leave you with a couple. Louis was described by a friend as the most tolerant and least prejudiced man I ever met. And when Dull Knife's people reached the Promised Land and were imprisoned for crimes committed along the way, he responded that if the authorities tried to send us back we will butcher each other. Let us never ever forget these were real people, not just dusty photographs.

The Original Occupy Movement
Part One.
In 1969, at a time when there were only ten Native American PHDs, Academic Revolutionary Lehman Brightman Founded & Coordinated The First Native Americans Studies Program in The United States at UC Berkeley. Two Months Into Assuming the teaching position at UCB, Brightman & a Group of Students attended the Annual Meeting of The National Congress of American Indians.
October 9th 1969 NCAI Held their Annual Meeting in Albuquerque New Mexico. At that Time, says Brightman, it was the largest, most politically powerful Indian Group in The United States---Every Indian Of Importance was there.
Scheduled speakers included Vice President Spiro Theodore Agnew & Walter J. Hickel, the Nixon-appointed Secretary of the Interior and Edward Kennedy. At the time Hickel, whose Office Oversaw the Bureau of Indian Affairs, was leading a Movement to END ALL FEDERAL TREATIES with Indian Nations. ''We can't just let nature run wild,'' said Walter J. Hickel. Professor Brightman, who had Testified before Congress Against Hickel's appointment Organized a Picket Line that Booed Hickel Off The Stand. Later, Members of United Native Americans,Inc Duped The BIA into Signing a Petition Calling For Hickel's Resignation. United Native Americans,Inc Was The First Militant Indian Organization To Rise To National Prominence.
Part Two.
Indians Invade Mount Rushmore
On August 29th, 1970, a small group of dedicated young Indians Invaded Mount Rushmore, the so called National Shrine of Democracy, located in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Indian people who took part in this out standing feat, did so at the Invitation of the Local Indian people from Rapid City, South Dakota and the Surrounding Reservations. Most of these young Indians were from Different Tribes and Reservations who Volunteered to Help the Sioux in their efforts to force the Federal Government to pay for the illegal taking of their land 94 years ago in 1877. The Invasion started at 8:00PM. Sat. Evening, the 29th of August 1970, when 23 young Indians, most of whom were college students, braved arrest and fines to help the Sioux regain their Sacred Black Hills. By 7:00AM the next Morning after an all night game of hide and seek or (rangers and Indians) most of the protesters had reached the Top of the Mountain near the four faces of the Presidents, where they hung out a large flag, with the Words, SIOUX INDIAN POWER. And After a Brief ceremony, they renamed the Mountain Crazy Horse Mountain in Honor of the Famous war chief Crazy Horse.
The Principal Leaders of the Invasion were: Lehman Brightman, National President of (U.N.A.) Dennis Banks, Executive Director of (A.I.M), Russell Means, the Leader of the Cleveland (A.I.M.) group and Carrol Swan, who helped coordinate the whole affair. Once all 23 members had reached the top and assembled, they proceeded to Establish a camp and an occupation that would last for approximately three months, or until Severe winter weather forced the withdrawal.
The incredible story behind this invasion and Occupation started five days earlier, when the local Sioux Indian people from Rapid City, South Dakota and the surrounding reservations established picket lines at the base of the monument. But after four days and nights of demonstrations the park authorities were not only not listening, but seemed to think the whole thing was a big joke. That is until the local People invited out of state Indians and National Indian Organizations to Aid them in their heroic endeavor. After taking the mountain and occupating it for a period of ten days or more, most of the college students and others were forced to return to school or their jobs, but by then the movement had caught on and Indian People from Across South Dakota were visiting the Mountain bring Food and Water and Replacing the original invaders by two fold. This was the First Indian uprising in South Dakota since the Sioux Wiped Out Custer in 1876, and suddenly young and old alike were taking new faith, Indians were Fighting Back. During the Second day of the Occupation the park authorities sent a message they wanted to talk with the leaders of the group to determine what they wanted and how long they intended to stay, Lehman Brightman replied, as long as the grass grows, the water flows and the sunshine's, which didn't seem to please them much.
Newell Fire
A fire that is believed to have started at about 6:30 PM Thursday night destroyed the Prairie Rose Building in Newell and kept 75 firefighters busy for hours. It was Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere who put in the call to 9-1-1 after he noticed smoke behind one of the downtown buildings while on his way to a basketball game. Lamphere says the early concern for firefighters when they arrived was saving the town's Post Office on one side of the burning building, and the town's bank on the other side. He says both buildings were saved with minimal damage.
No one was hurt. Firefighters are trying to find out what may have ignited the blaze the destroyed the former Rose Bar. The building had recently been converted into a fitness center.
Newell Fire Chief Vernon Howie says all of the firefighters did a wonderful job. Howie says firefighters from Newell, Belle Fourche, Nisland, Vale, Sturgis and Fort Meade responded to the fire.
