Carl Larsson paintings are much loved for their nostalgic and naturalistic portrayal of idyllic family life, Swedish culture and tradition. Carl Larsson gained inspiration from his love of his happy, beautiful home and children, and he left us many beautiful paintings that tell us his story in gentle, graceful and romantic fashion.

'Carl Larsson (May 28, 1853 -- January 22, 1919) was a Swedish painter and interior designer, representative of the Arts and Crafts Movement. His many paintings include oils, watercolors, and frescoes.
Larsson was born on May 28, 1853. His parents were extremely poor, and his childhood was not happy. Carl's strong artistic talent had emerged early in his life. When he was 13 years old, his teacher at the school for the poor had persuaded him to apply for enrollment at Principskolan, the preparatory department of the Royal Art Academy.
However, at the age of thirteen, his teacher Jacobsen, at the school for poor children urged him to apply to the principskola of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, and he was admitted. In 1869, at the age of sixteen, he was promoted to the antique school of the same academy. There Larsson gained confidence, and even became a central figure in student life.
After spending two summers in Barbizon, the refuge of the plein-air painters, he settled down with his Swedish painter colleagues in 1882 in Grez-sur-Loing, at a Scandinavian artists' colony outside Paris. It was there that he met the artist Karin Bergöö, who soon became his wife. This was to be a turning point in Larsson's life. In Grez, Larsson painted some of his most important works, now in watercolour and very different from the oil painting technique he had previously employed.
Carl and Karin Larsson had eight children and his family became Larsson's favourite models. Many of his watercolours are now popular all over the world.
In 1888 the young family was given a small house, named Little Hyttnäs, in Sundborn. Carl and Karin decorated and furnished this house according to their particular artistic taste and also for the needs of the growing family.
Through Larsson's paintings this house has become one of the most famous artist's homes in the world, transmitting the artistic taste of its creators and making it a major line in Swedish interior design.
The descendants of Carl and Karin Larsson now own this house and keep it open for tourists each summer from May until October.
The pictures of Carl Larsson's family and home became the most immediate and lasting part of my life's work. For these pictures are of course a very genuine expression of my personality, of my deepest feelings, of all my limitless love for my wife and children.

Carl Larsson föddes i ett fattigt hem vid Prästgatan 78 i Gamla stan. Under hans barndomstid bodde familjen på Ladugårdslandet. När han var tretton år uppmanade hans lärare honom att söka som elev vid Konstakademien, där han kom att studera 1869-76.
Carl Larsson flyttade till Paris 1877. Under sin tid där levde han i yttersta fattigdom. Efter att besviken ha återvänt till Stockholm och där i två år ha försörjt sig på illustrationsuppdrag, reste han för andra gången till Paris 1880 och började måla. Den lilla målarbyn Grez-sur-Loing i närheten av Fontainebleau blev hans residens och akvarellen hans specialitet.
Larsson gifte sig 1883 med konstnären Karin Bergöö och den växande familjen blev snart ett givet motiv för intima porträtt, däribland Bruden, Ateljéidyll och Lilla Suzanne.

Description: The Swedish artist Carl Larsson was born in 'Gamla stan', the old town in Stockholm, on May 28, 1853. His parents were extremely poor and his childhood was sad and miserable. However, at the age of thirteen his teacher at the school for poor children urged him to seek entry into the 'principskola' of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts where he also got accepted. The first years at the 'principskola' he felt socially inferior, confused and shy. In 1869, sixteen years old, he got promoted to the 'antique school' of the same academy. There Carl Larsson became more sure of himself and he even became a central figure in student life.
After several years as illustrator for books, magazines and newspapers Carl Larsson also spent several rather frustrating years in Paris as a hardworking artist without any success.
The turning point in Carl Larsson´s life came the year 1882 when he in Grez, a Scandinavian artist colony outside Paris, met Karin Bergöö (1859-1928), who soon should be his wife. One could almost call it a metamorphose in Carl Larsson's life. In Grez Carl Larsson painted some of his most important works - now in water-colour and very different from the more pretentious oilpainting technique.
Carl and Karin Larsson reared eight children and Karin and the children became Carl Larsson´s favourite models and many of those watercolours are now loved and cherished all over the world.
In 1888 the young family by gift got a little house, named Little Hyttnäs in Sundborn from Karin's father Adolf Bergöö. Carl and Karin formed and furnished this house after their own very special artistic taste and also for the needs of the growing family.
Through Carl Larsson's paintings and his books this house has been one of the most famous artist-homes in the world. The descendants of Carl and Karin Larsson now own this house and they are happy to be able to keep the house open for tourists each summer from May until October.
Carl Larsson considered his monumental works, for instance the frescos in schools, museums and other public buildings, to be his most important works. His last monumental work 'Midvinterblot' (Midwinter Sacrifice) signed in 1915 and intended for the last wall in the staircase of the National Museum in Stockholm - which was not yet decorated by Carl Larsson - was refused by the board of the museum. In his memoirs 'Jag' (I)-published after the death of Carl Larsson - he declared his bitterness and disappointment with this reverse against the painting he himself considered to be the crown on his work as an artist. In his memoirs 'Jag' Carl Larsson wrote: The fate of the 'Midwinter Sacrifice' broke me ! This I admit with a dark anger. And still, it was probably the best thing that could happen, for now my intuition tells me -again- that with all its weakness, this painting will once be honoured with far better placement after my death.

This place is absolutely wonderful to visit. Carl Larsson was a great artist and there is much from his hand in this house. There is also an exibition nereby about Karin Larsson an her art and next to the museum is an exellent restaurant, if you are hungry.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and King Carl Gustav of Sweden visited an exhibition of Swedish art and design at London's Victoria and Albert Museum on Thursday.
Both paid tribute to Swedish designers Carl and Karin Larsson, whose works are on display at London's famous museum.
The British Queen pointed to the impact Swedish designers have had on Britain in the fields of art and design as representative of the long history of cooperation the two nations have enjoyed.
London's Victoria and Albert Museum is host to the first major exhibition ever held outside Sweden of the work of Sweden's most popular artist, Carl Larsson.
Carl and his wife Karin created a style of interior decoration recognised as quintessentially Swedish - an innovative combination of turn-of-the-century influences, including Japanese prints, colourful Swedish folk art and elements from the British arts and crafts movement.
Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were joined by their Swedish counterparts, King Carl Gustav and Queen Silvia of Sweden, at the museum on Thursday.
In her tribute to the designers, Queen Elizabeth referred to the ever- growing popularity of modern Swedish design and interiors, drawing a parallel with the Larsson's rise to fame a century ago.

So the wave of interest in the present century of Sweden's furniture, Sweden's craftsmanship and Swedish design goes back a long way. Central Sweden - Where the moose is at home
Sweden, at the very top of the Norwegian border, 150 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle: Heidi Andersson lives here in a village called Ensamheten - Loneliness. That is quite apt. That's why they all stick together, work with wood and in agriculture and do the same sport - arm wrestling. Heidi is eight times world champion in this unusual sport for women and enjoys her life in loneliness.
The Baltic Sea coast in southern Lapland: Here there is a herring delicacy, the surströmming. And as is so often the case with specialities, the spirits differ - smell and taste are unique.
Then the journey leads into the forests and swamps of Sweden. About 400,000 moose live here. But you hardly get to see them. Unless you visit Sune Häggmark. He takes care of orphaned and sick animals. The tourists have turned this into a business for him.
Another moose friend is Lars Mortimer. He is the father of the melancholic and often depressed animal comic hero Hälge.
If you ask a child in Sweden to paint a house, he will paint a red house. Copper was extracted from the Falun pit. From the stony remains one still wins the coveted red color, the Swedish red. It preserves the wood and is as modern as ever.
Sundborn lies in the heart of central Sweden. After a visit to the pilgrimage site for Swedish fans from all over the world - the home of the probably most popular Swedish painter Carl Larsson - the Swedish journey ends with Peter Mosten. He produces birch champagne. He drills holes in the trunks to tap the birch trees. He uses a secret recipe to make sparkling wine from the juice. The business flourishes, and so he has set himself the goal of one day bringing 50,000 litres onto the market.
