King Crimson
King Crimson are a progressive rock band. Formed in London in 1968 (but featuring a transatlantic line-up since 1981), the band are widely recognised as a foundational progressive rock group (although the group members resist the label). The band have incorporated diverse influences and approaches during their five-decade history (including jazz and folk music, classical and experimental music, psychedelic rock, hard rock and heavy metal, new wave, gamelan, electronica and drum and bass) as well as balancing highly structured compositions against abstract improvisational sections and an interest in pop songs. The band has a large following, despite garnering little radio or music video airplay.
With guitarist Robert Fripp (considered to be the band's leader and motive force) as the only consistent member, King Crimson's line-up has persistently altered throughout its existence. Eighteen musicians and three lyricists have passed through the ranks, although the tenure of certain members has sometimes extended for decades. King Crimson's sound has varied according to its instrumentation - earlier line-ups featured prominent saxophone and keyboards, while subsequent line-ups replaced this with (variously) violin, innovative acoustic or electronic percussion, interlocking guitars or touch-style instruments. The band are notable for continuous engagement with contemporary music technology - in addition to Fripp's extensive work in loop music both in and out of the band, King Crimson pioneered the use of Mellotrons in 1968; Roland guitar synthesizers, Simmons electronic drums and the Chapman Stick in the 1980s; dense MIDI processing and the Warr Guitar in the 1990s, and Roland V-Drums in the 21st century. King Crimson's existence has been characterised by regular periods of hiatus (each of which have been initiated and concluded by Fripp). From 1997 until the present day, various subdivisions of King Crimson have continued to pursue aspects of the band's work and approaches via a series of related bands collectively referred to as ProjeKCts.

Artist-Parent or Parent-Artist: On Identity and Praxis
This panel discussion will focus on artists who are also parents who are able to balance time with their children along with devotion to their studio practice. Artists Scott Alario, Qiana Mestrich and Leah Bedrosian Peterson, along with moderator and artist Anna Ogier-Bloomer, will discuss the challenges faced by artist-parents, methods for increasing inclusion and awareness of issues, and ways in which parenthood has impacted each panelist’s practice. They will also investigate the altered artist identity of those with children, how it shifts, and how we see ourselves in comparison to how others view artists with children. These three artists on this panel exemplify the ways in which artists and parents can manage both, and, in the process, make great contributions to art making and contemporary discourse.
This panel includes three active photographer/artist/educator/parents: Scott Alario’s recent solo exhibition at Kristen Lorello in New York City includes a series of works created collaboratively with his wife and two children; he also teaches at Alfred University. Leah Bedrosian Peterson serves as the chair of the department of communication at Lycoming College; her multimedia work Erasure examines the cultural and environmental changes occurring in Southeast Asia and has been featured on Hunger Magazine's website and published in the magazine Heritage for the World, a distribution of National Geographic. Qiana Mestrich is a prolific writer and photographer, and has co-edited two editions of the book How We Do Both: Art and Motherhood. Her upcoming book, Diversity in Contemporary Photography, will be published by Routledge in 2017/18. Moderator Anna Ogier-Bloomer is the assistant director of Career Development for the School of Visual of Arts in New York City and a practicing photographer whose work has been featured in Feature Shoot, Huffington Post, Bust, Refinery29 and the Daily Mail.

The counterculture of the 1960s was an anti-establishment cultural phenomenon that developed throughout much of the Western world between the mid-1960s and the mid-1970s. The aggregate movement gained momentum as the Civil Rights Movement continued to grow, and would later become revolutionary with the expansion of the US government's extensive military intervention in Vietnam. As the 1960s progressed, widespread social tensions also developed concerning other issues, and tended to flow along generational lines regarding human sexuality, women's rights, traditional modes of authority, experimentation with psychoactive drugs, and differing interpretations of the American Dream. Many key movements related to these issues were born or advanced within the counterculture of the 1960s.As the era unfolded, new cultural forms and a dynamic subculture which celebrated experimentation, modern incarnations of Bohemianism, and the rise of the hippie and other alternative lifestyles, emerged. This embracing of creativity is particularly notable in the works of British Invasion bands such as the Beatles, and filmmakers whose works became far less restricted by censorship. In addition to the trendsetting Beatles, many other creative artists, authors, and thinkers, within and across many disciplines, helped define the counterculture movement.
Several factors distinguished the counterculture of the 1960s from the anti-authoritarian movements of previous eras. The post-World War II baby boom generated an unprecedented number of potentially disaffected young people as prospective participants in a rethinking of the direction of the United States and other democratic societies. Post-war affluence allowed many of the counterculture generation to move beyond a focus on the provision of the material necessities of life that had preoccupied their Depression-era parents. The era was also notable in that a significant portion of the array of behaviors and causes within the larger movement were quickly assimilated within mainstream society, particularly in the US, even though counterculture participants numbered in the clear minority within their respective national populations.The counterculture era essentially commenced in earnest with the assassination of John F. The symposium explores the mythology and psychology of sports stereotypes and mascots, and examines the retirement of Native American sports references and collegiate efforts to revive them despite the NCAA's policy against hostile and abusive nicknames and symbols.
