Outer Banks Wild Horses - Corolla, NC Official Visitor Information
I'm a tour guide here for Jay Bender and Corolla Outback Adventures. Somebody needs a tour guide because they need to be shown in person just how amazing the northern Outer Banks are here in Currituck County. Between the wild horses roaming freely, the local history and ecological information, someone needs to brought out here personally and given first-hand knowledge and experience of the area. And, of course, to be driven off-road, which is all where our tours are, is all off-road. The pavement ends, we're driving on the sand, and you definitely need that first-hand experience so you don't get stuck certainly.
It's always something new, always a different adventure, whether it's the horses doing something cool or interesting, or just something crazy happening on the beach...dolphins jumping out of the surf. It's always new and exciting up here on the beach.
Driving off-road, it's all about the open air, safari-style, you know, the kids get bounced around a little bit. You get in and out of the truck, the beautiful scenery. It'd be hard not to enjoy driving up and down the beach for a couple hours.
Some of the common questions are mainly geared towards the horses, if they're similar to the same group we have up on the Eastern shore of Virginia, Chincoteague and Assateague. People ask how often the horses, you know, go down and stand on the beach, the ocean...of coursea, the money shot that folks want. They ask if I can cue that up for them sometimes...obviously that's a joke (laughing), but basically just geared around the horses and what they're gonna do. Of course all the area, the different names of the towns and the history behind all that. And all the cool things I've seen growing up out here, and just everything fun.

Walking with the Wild Horses of Corolla, North Carolina, Outer Banks
More than 100 wild horses in the Corolla herd reside on a 7,500-acre sanctuary in the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. During the summer months the Outer Banks and the wild horses draw between 50,000 and 60,000 visitors each week. Local laws protect the animals from harassment and prohibit visitors from feeding the animals. They roam free and are often seen at the beach.

Corolla, OBX, NC Jeep Beach driving
Took our vehicles ('14 JKU and 95 Chevy Tahoe) out to Corolla, NC, for post-Thanksgiving beach wheeling. My jeep did well with no issues. The Tahoe's actuator crapped out so it wouldn't engage the front tires causing the rear tires to dig deep in to the sand and kept getting it stuck. First time had to be pulled out by a diesel truck. I had to strap it down the second time and pull it out to safety. Fun times overall.
Good Times on the Beach in Corolla
A family spends the day on the beach in the four wheel drive section of Corolla. Be sure to watch to the very end to see two of the three cool things they encounter along the way (no video of the dolphins - sorry!)
Beach driving is a huge draw in Corolla. Anyone with a 4WD vehicle can drive to the north end of NC 12 and out onto the sand. This area actually extends all the way up to the Virginia state line, and there are houses that can only be reached by 4WD.
Note: be sure to let some air out of your tires before you pull onto the sand. Don't try it with an All Wheel Drive vehicle. You won't make it past the soft sand at the access ramp. Watch out for horses!
Corolla Beach
Corolla Beach, NC is paradise and only accessible by 4 wheel drive up the beach. We took a jeep up the beach and share with you the remote beauty and wild horses. Flew the drone too so you can see the area from a birds eye view. Hope you enjoy!
WILD HORSE BEACH SAFARI - Corolla North Carolina!

We drive up on a four wheel drive beach with the tour group the Wild Horse Fund, located in Corolla, North Carolina.
Our thanks to the Wild Horse Fund. You guys do a great job with the tours and in managing the wild horse herd!

The Outer Banks '10 -- Wild Horses of Corolla
We went on a tour and got to check 'em out. There are no paved roads within this area of 1,500 homes. The law states that you must stay 50 feet away of the horses at all times.

Driving on the beach in Corolla NC
We drove on the beach for miles, reached pretty fast speeds. The beach we drove on is actually a state route (route 12) with some rules... Some houses here and there... Even a pizza delivery made it there... And we saw an Ambulance driving there..
This was a smooth part of the beach but most of it was a bit rough with some small dunes. It felt like driving in a foot of snow at times... The closer to the water the smoother the ride.

In this part of the roadtrip, we discovered the Outer Banks. We stayed in the charming town of Manteo on Roanoke Island which is located in a somewhat central location of this area. From there we could discover the beaches, the swamps or Jockey's Ridge State Park with it's amazing Sahara-like sand dunes. This is also where the first flight took place by the Wright brothers at Kill Devil Hills. Read more of the Outer Banks:
This area was so remote, it even has it's own dialect:
This drive takes us out on the banks to Rodanthe where you can find Serendipity house from the Richard Gere movie 'Nights in Rodanthe'. It since had been moved to higher ground and restored and you can see a picture of it at the end of the video where I've included a few photos, or read this article with the story:

Wild Horses at North Carolina Outer Banks
Wild Spanish Mustangs at Carova Beach, Corolla, North Carolina
In late September, 2019, we drove to Knotts Island, located along the western shores of the Back Bay in northeastern North Carolina. From the marina, we met up with our local guide, who took us via small powered boat across the Back Bay to the remote community of Carova Beach, on the Outer Banks. Carova Beach can only be reached by boat or by 4x4 vehicles. The isolated community is surrounded by various National Wildlife Refuges, and it is here that one of the largest herds of wild Spanish Mustangs reside. Our guide showed us around the area by boat and by 4wd truck. We appreciated the fantastic scenery of the area as well as observing dozens of wild horses. We even briefly entered False Cape State Park in Virginia.
Thanks for watching!
