Lake Crescent in the Olympic National Park
An above and below view of Lake Crescent.
Lake Crescent is a deep lake located entirely within Olympic National Park in Clallam County, Washington, United States, approximately 17 miles (27 km) west of Port Angeles, Washington on U.S. Route 101 and nearby to the small community of Piedmont. At an official maximum depth of 624 feet (190 m), also the maximum depth of the depth sounder used to find that depth (see depth section), it is officially the second deepest lake in Washington. Deer Lake Trail - Olympic National Park - Washington State - United States
Here are highlights of the Deer Lake Trail in Olympic National Park in Washington State. From the Sol Duc trailhead at the north side of the park, the trail climbs 1,640 feet in elevation as it follows the Sol Duc River and Canyon Creek. This trail has many wonderful waterfalls including the iconic, three prong Sol Duc Falls. After 3.4 miles one arrives at beautiful Deer Lake in a wooded basin in the transition zone from montane to subalpine forest. Deer lake is at an altitude of 3,522 feet.
For this backpacking trip I was joined by my brother, Bill O'Leary and his future spouse, Laura Covington.
The trip was enjoyable and truly memorable.

The results of this survey showed the maximum depth as being 596 feet. Using GIS statistical analysis, this survey also showed the lake contains approximately 0.5 cubic miles of fresh water.

STORM KING! Olympic National Park, Washington
Storm King was one of the most treacherous trails I have done! Getting to the top was well worth the struggle though! Beautiful views of Lake Crescent await you at the top. I highly recommend this hike to anyone looking for a bit of a challenge!

Olympic National Park (Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, Hoh Rainforest)
On the Fourth of July, citizens of the United States celebrate the Declaration of Independence from England in 1776. We also recall what makes the United States such a great place. The National Parks are a legacy that have been passed down from generation to generation, starting with Yellowstone, the first U.S National Park (established in 1872).
On this Fourth of July, we're pleased to share with you the highlights of our recent visit to Olympic National Park on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State.
Our footage was taken on 6/29 and 6/30 at Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, and in the Hoh Rainforest.
Enjoy!

About Dutch Oven Chef
There are five principles that guide everything we do at The Dutch Oven Chef.
Social – Dutch oven cooking brings people together — oftentimes away from modern conveniences. When we separate ourselves from the distractions of daily life, we believe we can make authentic connections with other people. At The Dutch Oven Chef, we want to help you bring your friends and family together with dutch oven cooking.
Stories – We always remember that great family campout, that camporee, that fishing trip. Dutch Oven cooking is a part of that journey and, at The Dutch Oven Chef, we plan to share our journeys with you.
Pioneering – We respect tradition and we learn from it; but, we also embrace innovation. At The Dutch Oven Chef, we experiment, try new flavors, use modern cooking methods and apply what we’ve learned to improve our cooking.
Simplicity – Our dishes are easy to make and great tasting. We bias towards fresh ingredients but we will use frozen or canned items because we know these ingredients can save preparation time.
Sharing – We didn’t wake up one morning and know how to cook — someone taught us. My first experience with dutch oven cooking was as a young boy scout at Camp Mack-Kin-O-Siew near Elcho, Wisconsin (about five hours north of Chicago, IL). We know that we’re standing on the “shoulders of giants” and we promise to share our recipes, our tips, and our love of dutch oven cooking with you. One of the greatest complements you can give us is to let us know that we helped you learn something new.
Happy Cooking!
Fran Shigley

Log Cabin Campground Olympic National Park - 360 Video Virtual Tour 4K
The future is here. 360 Video VR Tour of Log Cabin Campground Olympic National Park
Instructions on using the video:
This is a 360 VR Tour meaning you can look all around the video, up, down, left, right. Simply use your mouse to click and grab the screen to look around.
Youtube automatically loads the video in very low resolution. It is up to you to increase the quality by selecting the little gear icon at the bottom right of the video window (hover your cursor over the video and you will see it).
If you are viewing this on a mobile device you will need to view it in the Youtube app to get the proper experience.
If the video looks wobbly/ weird it means your browser needs to be updated.
Log Cabin Resort Campground is an Olympic National Park campground recently acquired, upgraded and opened for use. Located on the western shores of Lake Crescent this out of the way and little know campground affords some of the more dramatic views offered to RV campers in the large park. 35+ RV and tent camping operated by Aramark, a concessionaire for the Olympic National Park, the campsites are reasonably large (a few can fit up to about a 32′ RV) and easy to access.
Full hook-up sites include 20/30/50 amp electric connections, picnic tables and fire rings. These sites are not very private but the low awareness and out of the way location may benefit guests with no neighbors. Primitive tent and small RV sites can be found tucked in to the trees. Restrooms with water and showers are available. Gravel roads and parking pads with naturally irrigated grass.
The campground is found off East Beach Road which is a paved spur off US 101. The road is a bit narrow and a bit bumpy but the destination is worth the drive. A scenic swim beach and boat launch along with day use areas, lodge, paddle board rentals and cafe offer guests a unique way to experience a different area of the park.
Internet is available in the office but not in the campground.
Editors note: the park concessionaire staffs this location with college aged workers who, during our visit, exhibited a lack of professionalism. We spotted references to this behavior in other recent write-ups and felt the need to note it here. Obviously the seasonal nature of the position means that next year different employees will be working the area but do keep this in mind when checking in.
Additional note: Checkin is at the main office on the left side of the facility while the campground is to the right; if you have a larger setup it is recommended that you park to the right and walk over to check in.

Exploring Washington State | Dungeness Spit
After our adventures in Hawaii, Wild and Growing took the time to visit family in Washington State. We visited the longest sand spit in the United States! It's home to a wildlife protected area and located on the Strait of Juan de Fuca. During our time here we saw lots of cool wild life including Mergansers, a bald eagle, crustaceans, a blue heron, a seal, and lots of birds!
The entire Dungeness Spit trail trail is 6 miles to the lighthouse on the end of the spit. We only ended up walking 3 miles out. The Dungeness Spit, continues to grow 13 feet each year, as the bluffs degrade.
Besides the amazing wildlife and massive piles of driftwood we came across, we also found large amount of kelp! Kelp creates an important habitat for many sea creatures but are threatened by sea urchins who eat the roots of kelp. Sea otters protect the kelp by eating the sea urchins, their favorite meal. Learn how you can protect sea otters here:
