Olympic National Park: Strange and Unexplained Disappearances in Washington

► The Olympic National Park is a protected land located in the State of Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. Northwest of Olympia and bordered on the south by the Olympic National Forest, the park is home to four regions: the pacific coastline, alpine areas, the temperate rainforest to the west and the drier forests to the east. Originally, on the 2nd of March 1909, President Theodore Roosevelt designated the area with the Mount Olympus National Monument status, however both Congress and President Roosevelt assigned the land as that of a National Park on the 29th of June 1938.
48 years later in 1976, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designated the land as an international Biosphere Reserve. Finally, in 1981 the Olympic National Park was designated as a World Heritage Site.
According to nationalgeographic.com:
“One of the most primeval parts of the lower 48 states, Olympic National Park covers nearly 1 million acres of the eponymous peninsula in Washington State, 95 percent of which is designated wilderness. While the typical image of the park is a dark, damp and overwhelmingly beautiful temperate rainforest, the park also shelters alpine highlands, tranquil lakeshores, and a wild Pacific coastline that seems totally untouched by humans.”
The park attracts approximately 3 and a half million people every year and while most come and go without incident, some are not so lucky.

Deer Lake Trail - Olympic National Park - Washington State - United States
Here are highlights of the Deer Lake Trail in Olympic National Park in Washington State. From the Sol Duc trailhead at the north side of the park, the trail climbs 1,640 feet in elevation as it follows the Sol Duc River and Canyon Creek. This trail has many wonderful waterfalls including the iconic, three prong Sol Duc Falls. After 3.4 miles one arrives at beautiful Deer Lake in a wooded basin in the transition zone from montane to subalpine forest. Deer lake is at an altitude of 3,522 feet.
For this backpacking trip I was joined by my brother, Bill O'Leary and his future spouse, Laura Covington.
The trip was enjoyable and truly memorable.

Kalaloch Campground, Olympic National Park, Washington State Coast
Kalaloch Campground is a popular campground on the Washington coast on highway 101, north of the Quinault Reservation. Kalaloch is a large campground with many sections, a great beach area, nearby store, and a couple of interesting short trails.
It is an amazing place to explore the beach and watch the sun set. Parts of the campground are open year round.
This video shows you what the campground looks like during low season when few people are camping.

Hoh Rain Forest, Olympic National Park, Washington
Throughout the winter season, rain falls frequently in the Hoh Rain Forest, contributing to the yearly total of 140 to 170 inches (or 12 to 14 feet!) of precipitation each year. The result is a lush, green canopy of both coniferous and deciduous species. Mosses and ferns that blanket the surfaces add another dimension to the enchantment of the rainforest. The Hoh Rain Forest is located in the stretch of the Pacific Northwest rainforest which once spanned the Pacific coast from southeastern Alaska to the central coast of California. The Hoh is one of the finest remaining examples of temperate rainforest in the United States and is one of the park's most popular destinations.
