Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla, North Carolina
Currituck Beach Lighthouse still stands watch
Wrecks of the Huron and Metropolis put the NC Coast on the map. There is a reason it's called the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Heroic acts of bravery by the men and women who lived on the Outer Banks saved many lives. Their legacy is preserved and retold daily at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the 162-foot, red-brick beacon that has been shining its light here since 1875.
Visible for 21 miles, the beam protects the northern section of the Atlantic Ocean off the North Carolina coast. As many as 1,000 ships have been lost to the water's treacherous currents, shifting shoals and turbulent storms.
Visitors today can climb the 214 steps to the top of the lighthouse for spectacular views of the northern Outer Banks. The uppermost platform allows a 360-degree view of expansive ocean on one side and the tranquil Currituck Sound on the other.
The lighthouse is one of only nine still standing in the U.S. that has an operational, first-order Fresnel lens. The light keepers originally had to hand-crank suspended weights every two and a-half hours to operate the light, carry fuel to the top, and trim the wicks, which were four inches thick.
This may be the best example of a 1870s light station you'll be able to find these days, said Meghan Agresto, Lighthouse Site Manager, history buff and diligent supporter of research and preservation. The sense of place you find here is unique and exceptionally authentic.
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse, located in the Village of Corolla, is operated by the non-profit Outer Banks Conservationists. The grounds are free to visit; children 7 and under can climb the lighthouse for free (there is a fee for ages 8 on up).
Good Times on the Beach in Corolla
A family spends the day on the beach in the four wheel drive section of Corolla. Be sure to watch to the very end to see two of the three cool things they encounter along the way (no video of the dolphins - sorry!)
Beach driving is a huge draw in Corolla. Anyone with a 4WD vehicle can drive to the north end of NC 12 and out onto the sand. This area actually extends all the way up to the Virginia state line, and there are houses that can only be reached by 4WD.
Note: be sure to let some air out of your tires before you pull onto the sand. Don't try it with an All Wheel Drive vehicle. You won't make it past the soft sand at the access ramp. Watch out for horses!

Hampton Inn & Suites - Corolla, NC
- Interview with Jeff Tack, General Manager
We're an outstanding hotel to visit in Corolla, and for the most part, the entire Outer Banks because we're ideally suited for people that really enjoy the beach. The hotel sits on the beach, it has four pools plus an in-ground hot tub. And for people who want to get maximum beach time, this is the ticket. We have a complimentary breakfast in the morning, and just a short walk out to the beach. They can consider us their destination.
Predominantly we have short stays. A lot of times people associate this stay with their rental home stay. They come in a few days prior to have an eight or ten day vacation. They sometimes book a few days after a week-long in a rental home and it works out real well for them.
It seems like a private beach because there really isn't anything on either side of us. We have a large tract of land to the south that's vacant and we have a community pool for the Pine Island community to the north but no housing. So right in front of the hotel, essentially, is nothing but hotel guests and it's only a 123-room hotel so you talk about elbow room - this is maximum elbow room on the beach.
Most people who are Hampton Inn fans don't recognize the building - it's not a typical Hampton Inn. It very much looks like a residence and we try to maintain that homey feel with our presentation, with our staff, the way the lobby and everything, the services, work. We try to make everyone feel at home.
It's unbelievable the amount of return traffic we have year after year. We get to know their names, we become friends with them, know their kids' names. It's just really refreshing to see the same people year after year. There are people who actually know more about the hotel than I do and I've been here eight years.

Pine Island - Corolla, NC
Located halfway between the Town of Duck and Corolla village, the Pine Island community is unquestionably one of the premiere Outer Banks vacation destinations. Stretching along three and a half miles of exclusive beaches, this narrow strip of land is bordered to the east by the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by a protected National Audubon Society sanctuary and the Currituck Sound. A low density area, Pine Island homes provide a quiet retreat in luxurious estates with upscale amenities, breathtaking views and memorable sunrises and sunsets. Guests to Pine Island enjoy vast recreational amenities, including two community pools (an oceanfront pool to the north and a second Oceanside pool in the heart of the community), two tennis courts, a half-court basketball court, and a children's playground and picnic tables. Access to the Pine Island Racquet & Fitness Club is available for a nominal fee, and a paved bike path that borders NC Route 12 is ideal for cyclists, jogging enthusiasts and leisurely evening walks. Those guests in search of upscale leisure will quickly make themselves at home in the prestigious Pine Island community.
