Hoover Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the U.S. states of Nevada and Arizona. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 during the Great Depression and was dedicated on September 30, 1935, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. Originally known as Boulder Dam from 1933, it was officially renamed Hoover Dam, for President Herbert Hoover, by a joint resolution of Congress in 1947.
Since about 1900, the Black Canyon and nearby Boulder Canyon had been investigated for their potential to support a dam that would control floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power. In 1928, Congress authorized the project. The winning bid to build the dam was submitted by a consortium called Six Companies, Inc., which began construction on the dam in early 1931. Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. The torrid summer weather and lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties. Nevertheless, Six Companies turned the dam over to the federal government on March 1, 1936, more than two years ahead of schedule.
Hoover Dam impounds Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the United States by volume (when it is full). The dam is located near Boulder City, Nevada, a municipality originally constructed for workers on the construction project, about 30 mi (48 km) southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The dam's generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. The heavily traveled U.S. Route 93 (US 93) ran along the dam's crest until October 2010, when the Hoover Dam Bypass opened.
Helicopter Flight in Bell 206B JetRanger II Lake Mead Boulder City, Nevada
Recorded Feb. 22nd 2013, I was on my way to Hoover Dam and saw that a company by the name Dam Helicopter Company was selling Helicopter tours out of the Hacienda Hotel & Casino parking lot in Boulder City, NV
So I stopped and took a Lake Mead View Tour in this 1981 Bell 206B JetRanger II N20395 (cn 3301)

Short helicopter tour of the Hoover Dam close to Las Vegas in Nevada
My family and I took a short helicopter tour of the Hoover Dam in the state of Nevada. The 10-minute flight cost $569 USD for 4-persons and is located at the Hoover Dam Lodge and casino. Call +1 702 294 2200 for more information on the helicopter tour. The flight was pretty pricey for only 10-minutes but it was well worth it in my opinion. The ride alone was exhilarating and one of the things on my bucket list. The much longer helicopter tours from other companies run anywhere from $1200-1600 for 4-persons so I did not mind the price.

During our visit to Boulder City in February 2010, we were treated to a helicopter tour over Boulder City and Hoover Dam courtesy of Stars and Stripes Air Tours and Look! Hoover Dam Bypass Project | F&M MAFCO
F&M MAFCO, Inc. is a leading construction supply and equipment company, known internationally as The Powerful Solutions People, and we were able to play a major role in the construction of the Colorado River Bridge.
In September of 2006, construction was temporarily halted after the collapse of the cableway system. The cableway system is a critical part of the bridge construction project as it facilitates the delivery of construction materials across the entire canyon, a span of almost 2500 feet.
In March of 2007, we were was awarded the contract to supply two new 50-ton capacity High Line cableways.
The new cableway system consisted of four towers that were 335 feet tall, two head towers on the Nevada side, and two tail towers on the Arizona side. A total of 14 hoists, 8 winches and over 100,00 feet of wire rope and pendants were used for the erection of the High Line Cableway system.
The Colorado River Bridge is an engineering and construction marvel and is the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States.

Nevada Travel Vlog – The Travels Of Z exploring The Hoover Dam, A major tourist attraction in Nevada after Las Vegas because of the Hoover Dam Tours. Las Vegas to Hoover Dam is a very popular day trip. It only takes 40 minutes from Las Vegas to Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam tours are also very popular. Hoover Dam water release is one of the primary attraction of this location, lot of people do the Hoover Dam water bottle experiment or sometimes with a basketball. There are several Hoover Dam documentary on different conspiracy about Hoover Dam’s construction or that the Hoover Dam will collapse after a major earthquake. There are two Hoover Dam tour available, I prefer the Full Hoover Dam tour instead of the Powerplant tour because it longer and gives you free access to the visitors center, which is otherwise an additional $10. If you have seen videos on American History then you’ve probably seen Hoover Dam pictures or Hoover Dam Lake – Lake Mead, the largest man made reservoir in United States. Hoover Dam Bridge is also a popular attraction. Hoover Dam is also a popular Hollywood movie set. Movies like Transformers, San Andreas, and Viva Las Vegas were shot here in Hoover Dam. Fallout new Vegas hoover dam was also a very popular topic after video game Fallout added Hoover Dam as a part of two major battle location.

During the years of lobbying leading up to the passage of legislation authorizing the dam in 1928, the press generally referred to the dam as Boulder Dam or as Boulder Canyon Dam, even though the proposed site had shifted to Black Canyon. The Boulder Canyon Project Act of 1928 (BCPA) never mentioned a proposed name or title for the dam. When Secretary Wilbur spoke at the ceremony starting the building of the railway between Las Vegas and the hoover dam site on September 17, 1930, he named the dam Hoover Dam, citing a tradition of naming dams after Presidents, though none had been so honored during their terms of office.

Lake Mead
Hi, my name is Jennifer, I'm with Desert Adventures, out of Boulder City, Nevada. 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of our country's first National Recreation Area: Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Lake Mead was formed by the building of the Hoover Dam, across the Colorado River. The Dam was completed in 1935, and it took six years, for Lake Mead to fill. At full pool, Lake Mead is the largest man-made reservoir in our country. So, Hoover Dam was built to control the Colorado River, and it's flooding. The main purpose of the water, now, in Lake Mead, is to irrigate croplands...further south. As well as, provide hydropower, for electricity that goes to cities such as: Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, as well as, Tucson. The Lake Mead also stores water for 25 million people in California, Nevada, and Arizona. The water that fills Lake Mead is mainly from snowmelt, in the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah.
As you can see, there is a distinct white band around the lake, and around the islands. Now, those are calcium deposits, so, it's approximately 130 feet, down from it's full pool level. The water level has been dropping in Lake Mead, due to a combination of drought, as well as, overuse. Lake Mead National Recreation Area attracts visitors from all over the world, to enjoy such activities, such as: boating, kayaking, canoeing, biking, hiking, and swimming. On both the Lake itself, and the river below the Dam, known as Black Canyon. This is Jen, with Desert Adventures, your premiere adventure company, in Boulder City, Nevada.

Just downstream from Hoover Dam is the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge with two concrete arches that stretch 1,060 feet across the Black Canyon. Completed in late 2010 at a cost of US$240 million, the bridge links Nevada and Arizona along U.S. Highway 93.
The bridge is a big tourist attraction as it is the longest bridge of its kind in the Western Hemisphere and the second-tallest bridge in the United States after the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado.
The bridge is named after former Nevada Gov. Mike O'Callaghan and Pat Tillman, the former NFL player who was killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire.
