Battery Point Beach Area | Lighthouse and Museum on Island | Crescent City, California
The beautiful Battery Point Area in Crescent City, California. AKA The Crescent City Light Station.
(The best) Pacific Ocean beach, Battery Point Lighthouse and Museum on an island.
The historical (still active and open to visit) lighthouse/museum was built in 1856. It is also said to be haunted by a former resident lighthouse keeper, there are Native American legends about the island it is located on as well. It has also been in movies and many weddings have taken place on the island.
Be sure to go at low tide; there is an awesome path to the island that the lighthouse/museum is on, but if you don't go at low tide, you won't be able to get to it!
At any time there can be sneaker waves when crossing path, be very careful!
(Open April-September)

Ah Pah Village - Del Norte, CA
Native Americans face many challenges -- poverty, substance abuse, and type-2 diabetes, among others. But Willard Carlson Jr., a member of the Yurok Tribe in Del Norte County, is helping to build self esteem among youth by teaching them about the Yurok's traditional cultural practices.

Anatomy Of A Win: Neighborhoods
Our built environment has a tremendous impact on our health. Imagine if you lived in a community without sidewalks? How would your kids get to and from school safely? The community of Lamont in South Kern County tackled this as an issue of community safety. And in the northern tip of California, Del Norte County’s Native American population was hindered in managing the land due to fire suppression policies that conflicted with their ability to grow crops and manage their land in a way that best supports the community’s health. This video chronicles two Building Healthy Communities sites and how they changed their neighborhoods through grassroots organizing and people power.

Bike Free in California - Del Norte State Park
Big trees. The biggest we've ever seen.
ABOUT BIKE FREE
Pedaling more than 5,000 miles from Maryland's Chesapeake Bay to the California coast, bicyclists Paul Lebelle and Adam Burkowske have joined the movement to share the goodness of cycling with kids -- specifically, the kids of our military families.
Paul and Adam started Bike Free (bikefree.org), a non-profit charity, whose goal is to get 1,000 bikes and helmets to military kids.
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken a heavy toll on kids growing up in military families. Parents come back wounded or don't come back at all. Kids are also facing parents' multiple deployments, says Adam.
We know that being outside in the fresh air, sunshine, and having physical activity is not only good for your health, but also raises your spirit, says Paul.
Both Paul and Adam's families have military backgrounds. Adam's brother served on the USS George Washington and is now stationed in San Diego. One of Paul's grandfathers graduated from the Naval Academy and captained submarines. Paul's other grandfather was former NY Giants Kyle Rote whose older brother, Jack, sacrificed his life at Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart.
Military kids are the forgotten victims of war. Bringing the joy, freedom, and fun of riding a bicycle to these kids is what Bike Free is all about.
For further information or to help support their mission, Paul and Adam can be reached through the Bike Free website, bikefree.org.

Humboldt Lagoons State Park
In the early 1900's Dry Lagoon was drained by early farmers and several types of crops were attempted but none proved economical. Several dairy ranches were established along the shores of Stone Lagoon.
Later, when the highway was improved, a motel-restaurant called the Little Red Hen was located next to the lagoon. This business continued in operation until 1979. The restaurant building was remodeled into a museum and park office and is now the Humboldt Lagoons Visitor Center and Bookstore.
Today the marshland habitat has returned and supports a rich variety of marsh plants, birds and other animals. There are day use only picnic areas at the visitor center and at the north end of Stone Lagoon on the beach. The park offers boating, fishing, beachcombing, and hiking.
Bring your own boat and enjoy exploring the lagoon. At the beach you have access to six miles of beachcombing, bird watching, whale watching, or agate hunting. There is also a three mile Coastal Trail.
Location/ Directions
Humboldt Lagoons is located 40 miles north of Eureka and 55 miles south of Crescent City on Highway 101. (Latitude/Longitude: 41.1900 / -124.1206)
Seasons/Climate/Recommended Clothing
Coastal/Temperate. Summer is foggy, cool and damp, with temperatures averaging 50-60 degrees. Winter temperatures average 40-50 degrees with a 60 annual rainfall occurring mostly November - May. Spring and Fall are typically very nice.
