It's peak season for fall foliage in Northern California | Bartell's Backroads
Searching for fall colors in Northern California? Take a road trip to Alpine County, south of Lake Tahoe. John Bartell has the best place to see fall foliage in this Bartell's Backroads.
========================
For the text story, pictures, and the Bartell's Backroads interactive map, visit abc10.com/backroads
Autumn does exist in California and the leaves are at peak color in the state's smallest county. Alpine County is South of Tahoe, and 96% of the land here is State or National Forest. What Alpine County lacks in size and population it makes up for in big color.
Quaking aspen trees are abundant, and every October the trees attract hordes of leaf-peepers. The changing color is just as good or better than what you would find in New England, and that's what leaf-peepers like John Poimiroo wait all year for. One of the most amazing things about California is the color starts at 10,000 feet, then drop 500 feet every week, says Poimiroo.
Leaf-peepers are people who look for changing leaf colors. Poimiroo tracks the state's leaf transformations on his website, californiafallcolor.com which give other leaf-peepers a heads up on peak leaf changes. There's several fall color trees. Big leaf maple in Northern Sierra, quaking aspen, and the black oak which is called the Halloween tree, says Poimiroo.
Unlike trees in New England, trees in California go through a much longer transformation. That's because of elevation and the sun. Well, they are turning because of the light. They are getting less light every day and light makes chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is what make the leaves green, says Poimiroo.
Temperature also plays a factor in leaf color. Cold temperatures and less light triggers the trees to change color and drop leaves before snow falls. Those vibrant color result from colder temperatures. We want warm days and cold nights, says Poimiroo.
Its easy to see the fall color from your car. Highway 88 in Hope Valley and Kirkwood area have a number of locations with roadside parking to view the leaves and steep mountains. Leaf season usually happens mid-October and the beginning of November in Alpine County, but leaves are changing color at different times all over California. Colfax, California
Colfax (formerly, Alden Grove, Alder Grove, Illinoistown, and Upper Corral) is a city in Placer County, California, at the crossroads of Interstate 80 and State Route 174. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,963 at the 2010 census. The town is named in honor of U.S. Vice President Schuyler Colfax (1869–73), a bronze statue of whom stands at Railroad Street and Grass Valley Street. (This is the only known statue of Schuyler Colfax in the United States). Some of the town's notable features include the newly restored Southern Pacific Railroad colonnade-style depot (which houses the Colfax Museum and Chamber of Commerce) built in 1905, the downtown shops on Main Street, and Colfax High School, which serves a large surrounding area.
Originally inhabited by the Maidu and Miwok Indians, by the mid-19th century the city site was known as Alder Grove; however, as development increased, the city became known as Illinoistown.
Later it was renamed Colfax after then Speaker of the House (and later Vice President) Schuyler Colfax who visited the town in 1865 while inspecting progress of construction of the Central Pacific Railroad, the western portion of the first transcontinental railroad. The city was the southern terminus of the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad from 1876 until the railroad’s removal in 1942. Historic U.S. Route 40 also runs through the city as well as the more modern Interstate 80. The city is mentioned in Jules Verne’s book, Around the World in Eighty Days.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 square miles, all of it land. The 2010 United States Census reported that Colfax had a population of 1,963.

RUMRUNNER'S PARADISE
New Year's Eve, 1915 was a party to end all parties in Spokane. At the stroke of midnight, every saloon in the state would be out of business. This would be the last call before statewide prohibition would be enacted, closing the taps four years before the rest of the nation. But even as revelers saluted the new dry year, a lucrative wet underworld was forming between Spokane and Canada.

Strangers in Their Own Land: Challenges Climbing the Empathy Wall

0:30 - Introduction by Dylan Riley
6:01 - Main Speaker - Arlie Hochschild
45:01 - Audience questions
Arlie Hochschild describes her journey from Berkeley, her own liberal cultural enclave, to Louisiana, a conservative one. She explores her choice of research site, her effort to remove her own political alarm system, and during five years of research, to climb over what she calls an “empathy wall.” She focuses on her concept of the “deep story” – a version of which underlies all political belief, she argues, and will end with the possibilities of finding common ground across the political divide. Placer County California Knife Ordinance 2012 ( Knife Law )
Placer County California Knife Ordinance
Cities of Placer County:
Auburn, Lincoln, Rocklin, Roseville
Incorporated towns:
Loomis
Unincorporated places:
Alta, Applegate, Baxter, Carnelian Bay, Dollar Point, Dutch Flat, Foresthill, Granite Bay, Kings Beach, Kingvale, Meadow Vista, Newcastle, North Auburn, Ophir, Penryn, Olympic Valley, Sheridan, Sunnyside-Tahoe City, Tahoe Vista, Tahoma, Weimar
Hey let's talk about Placer County California's Knife Ordinance as far as I can find there is only one and its location specific.
So here it is in Chapter 12 called Roads, Highways & Public Places there is Article 12.24 called County Parks there is section 12.24.010 called General. There is may sub sections the knife related sub section H. States It is unlawful for any person to have possession of a weapon or to shoot, discharge, or fire any bullet, arrow, or other projectile into, over, or on any county-owned or county-operated park.
Now there isn't anything specific that says knives but the term weapon is vague enough that some LEO could use it against you for carrying a knife. So to be safe it's probably best not wear a knife in this county's parks other than that no restrictions. Now remember you still have to abide by your city &state knife codes. Along with your county codes.
As always I am not a lawyer & these videos are strictly for informational Purposes only if you need real legal advice seek out a criminal lawyer. As Always read & keep a copy of all pertaining knife laws for yourself. Practice stating them so you sound confident & intelligent when you say them. Remember you are your own best advocate, stopping the process at the initial contact is far better than wining a court case after lots of legal action. Well that's it for now, bye for now.

Thorium.
Thorium is an abundant material which can be transformed into massive quantities of energy. To do so efficiently requires a very different nuclear reactor than the kind we use today- Not one that uses solid fuel rods, but a reactor in which the fuel is kept in a liquid state. Not one that uses pressurized water as a coolant, but a reactor that uses chemically stable molten salts.
Such a reactor is called a Molten Salt Reactor. Many different configurations are possible. Some of these configurations can harness Thorium very efficiently.
This video explores the attributes of Molten Salt Reactors. Why are they compelling? And why do many people (including myself) see them as the only economical way of fully harnessing ALL our nuclear fuels... including Thorium.
This video has been under development since 2012. I hope it conveys to you why I personally find Molten Salt Reactors so compelling, as do the many volunteers and supporters who helped create it. Much of the footage was shot by volunteers.

SELECT COMMITTEE ON SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF CHILDREN'S WELL-BEING
Welcome to Select Committee on the Social Determinants of Children’s Well-Being
The social determinants of health are conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work, and age. Children’s well-being is increasingly linked to the social determinants. For example, nearly a quarter of young children in California live in poverty—a fact that has profound educational, health, and economic repercussions now and in the long term in that they create inequities that are unfair, but that could be mitigated. For the scope of the Committee’s work, we are defining children to include young adults up to age 26.
The Select Committee was formed in February 2019 and will be active through the two-year legislative session. The bipartisan Select Committee members will be tasked with presiding over hearings that focus on specific social determinants of health that drive negative outcomes such as housing and homelessness, health access, immigration, poverty and the safety net, land use, and education. The Committee seeks to understand challenges in the current systems with the various determinants and consider ways to improve outcome for children. The geographic focus of the work will be on areas with high poverty rates that is inclusive, but not limited to: Los Angeles, the San Joaquin Valley, the Inland Empire, the Central Coast, and Northern Border/Tribal Lands.
The Committee will study and make recommendations promoting the health of children in California. These recommendations will be posted on the Senate website
