Sacramento Old City Cemetery - Part 1 Pioneers Of Our Past
Sacramento Old City Cemetery was established in 1849 by John Sutter captain of Sutter's Fort who founded the city and donated 10 acres of land to be used for public burial. Sadly a short time later a major Cholera epidemic outbreak occurred killing about a 1000 emigrants who came to Sacramento as a stage stop before heading up to the sierras in search of gold. During the 1850's many pioneers buried here were victims of fires, flooding and disease, As the years passed the cemetery expanded to over 60 acres containing some of the most beautiful monuments and graves in the state of California as it was Victorian by design. At one time this cemetery had a bell tower and a gate house even. Margaret Crocker in 1880 donated 23 acres of the cemetery who owned an observatory that overlooked this historic graveyard. In the 1800's many victims of the Cholera epidemic were buried in mass graves along with 3000 pioneers, various fraternal groups, mayors, governors and other politicians were served the state of California. Old City Cemetery is divided up into nine smaller cemeteries which includes veterans of the Civil War in the Grand Army Of The Republic, Masons, Spanish American War Soldiers, Pioneers and Fireman who started the first hook and ladder company in the state of California just to name a few. At one time the region was prone to severe flooding so many pioneers camped up the cemeteries hill to escape the rising waters in the 1860's. After the turn of the century the city began to neglect this cemetery many of the graves were exhumed to make room for the growing city streets and other structures. The cemetery for many years was forgotten, desecrated and vandalized. Names such as E.B. Crocker, William Stephen Hamilton, General George Wright, John Sutter, Members of the Donner Party, Mark Hopkins and many more notables were interred here which later led to graveyards historic status in the 1950's. Today the cemetery is not only a designated historical landmark but also a haunted one. Stories about a phantom dog, couple wearing all black, firefighter who greets cemetery visitors, heroic train engineer who saved his passenger and even a little girl who died of Encephalitis are said to haunt this cemeteries graves. We invite you to take a tour of one of the most beautiful pioneer cemeteries on the west coast which is full of nature, flowers, history, lore and beautiful craftsmanship of various monuments of the dearly departed.

One of the reasons we decided on moving to Sacramento from the Bay Area was the fact that this city has so many places to visit within driving distance. Apple Hill is just one of many destinations that my family and I love to visit, that's less than an hour away.

B. N. Bugbey California '49er Pioneer
Benjamin Norton Bugbey was a California '49er pioneer who settled in the Folsom region. He led a famed and colorful life in law enforcement, vineyard owner, producer of wine, brandy, and champagne, fought for the civil rights of the Chinese, and fought against the political establishment in Sacramento. Bugbey had two pieces of music commissioned for his sparkling wines by a local Sacramento pianist in the late 1860s. His position over land ownership in a battle with the large Natoma Water and Mining Company was vindicated when the United States Supreme Court ruled in his favor. As U. S. Commissioner, he had white men arrested for harassing Chinese laborers. He had Chinese men and women arrested for holding young Chinese women as slaves and forced prostitution. Bugbey also helped several Chinese women escape their Sacramento masters by assisting them with train travel to San Francisco safe houses. Late in life, at the age of 71, he would take on Hiram Johnson and won over the question of whether he could be a candidate for the elected position of Tax Collector. His victory forever split the Tax Collector function from the office of sheriff. He also suffered personal tragedy with the loss of his first wife in a riding accident at Mormon Island. He consumed too much of his own alcoholic product and tried to kill the Constable of Granite Township. He would bounce back from these setbacks and patent a refrigerated railroad car and become the Under Sheriff of Sacramento County. This presentation on the life of B. N. Bugbey is based on his biography Benjamin Norton Bugbey, Sacramento's Champagne King written by Kevin Knauss. The video presentation touches on some of the highlights of Bugbey's life in California beginning in 1849 until his death in 1914.

Neo-Nazi protest in Sacramento turned ugly as activists clashed outside Capitol
'They came ready to fight': At least ten people injured, two with life-threatening injuries, after 'mass stabbing' at neo-Nazi rally in California
Neo-Nazi protest in Sacramento turned ugly today as activists clashed with counter-demonstrators outside Capitol
Ten people are in the hospital, two with life-threatening injuries, after the violent attacks that started around 11.45am
Nine men and one woman, ages 19 to 58, were injured during the massive fight on Sunday
It is not known which group the injured are from, but neo-Nazi bragged 'they got one of ours but we got six of theirs'
About 30 members of the Traditionalist Worker Party showed up for the rally and were met by about 400 counter-protesters before the violence erupted
The Capitol remained on lockdown three hours after the large fight broke out and no arrests were made
Ten people were stabbed and rushed to the hospital on Sunday when right-wing extremists holding a rally outside the California state Capitol building clashed with counter-protesters.
California Highway Patrol Officer George Granada said about 30 members of the Traditionalist Worker Party (TWP) were gathering for a rally around noon Sunday when they were met by about 400 counter-protesters and a fight broke out.
'I don't think there was any verbal exchange, just full on fight,' Granada said according to the Los Angeles Times.
Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Chris Harvey said emergency crews transported those who were stabbed, two of them with life-threatening injuries, and that many other people had cuts, scrapes and bruises.
According to KCRA, nine men and one woman, ages 19 to 58, were injured during the massive fight. At least three individuals were stabbed at the State Capitol while the others were injured in a neighboring park.
As people tried to leave the area, smaller fights broke out, Granada said. He said no arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon.
He said the Capitol remained on lockdown three hours after the large fight broke out, but that things had calmed down and only about 70 'anti-fascists' remained in the area.
The LA Times reported that California Assemblyman Jim Cooper, who is a former sheriff's captain, said that employees at the Capitol were sheltered inside the building's basement level during the incident.
Some staff and tourists were still inside the Capitol when an email was sent to legislative staffers about 3.30pm saying that the building remained on lockdown.
'They came ready to fight,' Cooper said, referencing how some of the protesters came dressed as if they planned to battle it out.
Harvey said: 'There was a large number of people carrying sticks and rushing to either get into the melee or see what was going on.'
While it is not yet known which group the wounded belonged to, one neo-Nazi broadcasting the march online bragged that 'they got one of ours but we got six of theirs'.
Emergency crews were called to the area at 11.45am and found victims strewn across the grounds outside of the Capitol building.
Around an hour later police had cordoned off parts of the area and most of the demonstrators had left, according to the LA Times.
ATS: US Expansion (Route 50): Las Vegas(NV.US) to Sacramento(CA.US)
This trip on my El CEJ profile routes via the part of US Route 50 added by the US Expansion map (2.5.1). Some of the rest of the trip is shown, but that is moderately to heavily edited.
The load is a long mobile barrier. The trip goes from the bitumen depot at the edge of Las Vegas, to roadworks to the north west of Sacramento.
The route heads north away from Las Vegas on route 93, then turns onto Nevada route 375 (a.k.a. the Extraterrestrial Highway). I edit out some strange lights near Rachel (no use starting rumors).
The route then turns west on highway 6 to Tonopah. This has been rebuilt in ATS 1.34 and is laid out much better than previously. We head along the 6/ 95 northwest to west, and at a small town, turn onto the 395. We follow this almost to Carson City, but take the turn west to Lake Tahoe. When we get to the top of the hill, we turn left onto route 50.
This is the new part of the route, and we skirt around the south end of the lake. Soon after that we enter the town of Lake Tahoe South. The route leaves the town, and climbs over the main range. On the descent I try to park the truck for a rest, but the rest stop does not let me rest. I therefore turn off fatigue simulation and continue past Placerville. The route descends to Sacramento, skirting the city centre before reaching Interstate 5.
At this point you would think we are almost there. Unfortunately though, it turns out there are roadworks (or a major accident) on the 5 just north of a major intersection with Interstate 80. We are forced to divert a long way either east or west. As it turns out we go west. This takes us along the 80, then we turn onto the 37 to San Rafael. Here we get onto Interstate 101, going north through Ukiah (as night falls) and Eureka. Here we turn east, fill up with fuel and travel on the 299 to Redding. I show all of the 299 trip, as it is very windy - a difficult trip during the night.
I head through part of Redding, but before reaching Interstate 5, turn south on the county road paralleling the 5. This travels quite some distance (edited out) before I reach the destination roadworks. It has been perhaps an extra 300 miles distance added to the trip.
