Artisan Guitars - Franklin (Nashville), Tennessee
Wow, what a guitar shop. Pretty much, each guitar is a work of art. Yes, there are a limited numbers of Martins, Taylors and Guilds and even a selection of composite (carbon fiber) guitars. Bill took his time with us explaining in incredible detail (and obviously from a vast experience and knowledge base) guitar construction and sound dynamics. He tells me that he will build state of the art electronic pickup systems into any guitar purchased in the store. If you are going to Nashville, don't miss this stop. BTW...I never met any of the folks at this store before and have no interest in their business. I just wanted to pass on a very nice one of a kind guitar store in the Music City area.

Tennessee | 24 Hours in Nashville (Music City)
Nashville is the state capitol of Tennessee with a population of just over 650,000 people which is relatively small in comparison with other cities in the US. The city itself stradles the Cumberland River, which goes on to join the Mississippi River in Memphis. Nashville is famous throughout the world has being a place where musicians and music fans gravitate hence the nickname Music City, other than music Nashville is also a large rail hub as it is the confluence of different national railroads within the US.
The video is a composite of 3 days worth of footage taken while I was in Nashville a.k.a Music City while attending a conference- given the fact that for two of the days I was in the conference center, I felt this was best way of portraying life around Nashville and certainly Broadway over a 24 hour period.
All the bars which feature live music acts are predominantly set around Broadway between 5th Avenue North and 1st Avenue North a distance of about 0.25 miles. Just off Broadway within the avenues listed above are the other attractions- Ryman Auditorium, Country Music Hall of Fame to name a few. Unfortunately I didn't have time to visit those.
At night Broadway is very lively with different genres of music and lots of drinks flowing; I found that some venues imposed a cover charge which I avoided as there are many others which are free to get it- the cover charge thing annoys me when the venue itself is charging exorbitant money for the food and drink on offer. You can have a good time on Broadway, but like the rest of Nashville its not exactly a cheap night out and I would say above average in terms of cost. But if you are a fan of rock / country music then I would definetly put a visit to Broadway in Nashville on your bucket list as it is something that just has to be experienced.
In the morning broadway is quite and the streets are normally wet after being rinsed down from the night before - no need to explain why! Other than bars with live music, Broadway has a few record shops and clothing shops which sell the typical southern attire of jeans, fancy shirt, big belt, boots and the obligatory stetson; not sure if that is a stereotype or not, so no offense intended- especially as I only saw a handful of people dressed like during my entire time in Nashville / Tennessee.
While staying in Nashville, you will on occasion hear train horns in the distance- I first heard one in the morning from my 22nd Floor hotel room, which took me by surprise! Nashville is a hub for the CSX railroad company and can be a magnet for trainspotters a.k.a 'Rail Fans' in the US. Having heard about how big American freight trains can be in comparison with those in the UK, I decided to go looking for one at the railroad crossing on 2nd Avenue North and also Demonbreun Street. After a short wait, sure enough a huge train which took approximately 10 minutes to pass- so given an estimated speed of 15 mph that would make the train approximately 2.5 miles long. Nashville is a rail hub at is the cross road between rails travelling North-to-South and East-to-West. Hence throughout the day, you will hear train horns in the distance, which from what I seen is a bit of an annoyance for certain areas within East Nashville.
During my time in Nashville it was Marine Week, whereby a significant amount of US Marines decend on the city to perform live demonstrations, static displays of military hardware, musical performances and demonstrations of time honours Marine Corps traditions. It was very impressive- especially as one afternoon a MV-22 Osprey hovered over the city and landed in one the open areas.
I enjoyed my time in Nashville as it has always somewhere I wanted to visit due to my tastes in music! It surprised me how small and compact the city was- especially the music areas since alot of it is centred around the lower end of Broadway. The actual recording studios etc are located out of town nowadays or in the big high-rises. If I return in the future, I'll definetly want to see a performance in the Ryman Auditorium and explore some of the other venues that were on offer.

Buying and Selling Vintage Guitars - A sad tale of a 1965 Gibson ES-330TD
Click LIKE and SUBSCRIBE if you find this the least bit informative!
The information in this video comes from my years of experience doing repairs and buying and selling for music stores I've worked at in the Northwest and Texas. Hopefully some insight I'm able to offer from my experiences can help you visually assess an instrument you are buying or selling!
This video details a 1965 ES-330TD guitar I bought on Reverb.com that was not as described.
In this video I use this example of a vintage instrument with some poor repairs and issues to show just a few things to look out for when you are buying or selling guitars.
I should note a couple of things about my video
1) I mention guys in reference to luthiers and techs. One of my best playing guitars was re-fretted by Lauren Ellis in Austin Texas and I in no way intend to insinuate anything about gender here - pick the best luthier in your area to help you achieve your repair and maintenance goals!
2) I mention that binding nibs being gone are the way to indicate a re-fret on a Gibson guitar. This is not the case as some luthiers will be able to preserve the binding nibs at additional cost. Nibs are one way to determine a re-fret but not THE way.
I hope the information I am able to provide is of help to you.
Chazz Bessette has been repairing and modifying instruments and electronics for over 16 years and has served the communities of Sea-Tac, Washington, Austin, Texas and now Portland, Oregon. A gigging musician and recording artist, Chazz has always received inquiries and compliments of his custom made gear.
He began studying equipment under his father's guidance as a Washington state pre-teen and honed his skills over time reading books, building amplifiers and working in the field of instrument sales and repair.
His father, Chuck Bessette is himself an accomplished amplifier builder and designer in Washington state.
In Austin, Chazz made a name for himself as a competent and attentive tech, builder, pickup rewinder helping touring artists such as Dr. Dog, Bobby Whitlock (Derek and The Dominos), Bill Kirchen, Robert Plant, Dave Mason, and many others while remaining an in demand roots rock and roll and garage rock multi-instrumentalist and home recording artist in his band Silver Ships.
1974 Fender Stratocaster Olympic White for sale at Reverb.com
Rare and Unusual 1974 Fender Stratocaster for sale at Reverb.com!
Buy now at:
Olympic White Stratocasters are prized by collectors for their great looks as well as Fender's classic sound. These guitars slowly turn a buttery white color over time, so the older they get, the better they look. This 41-year old guitar looks and sounds terrific. It has a lightweight alder body, three-bolt maple neck, and three staggered-pole single-coli pickups.
Bound to Increase in Value
Collectors and players love guitars like this Strat that were made in the original Fullerton, California Fender factory. This Stratocaster has a serial number of 559903, which The Guitar Dater Project verifies as made in Fullerton before Fender moved its production overseas. In addition, this guitar has staggered pole pickups, which were discontinued shortly after this guitar was made. That means that this 1974 Fender Stratocaster might be one of the last truly collectible Strats ever made.
Almost Unused for the Past 25 Years
I'm the second owner of this instrument. I purchased it in the early 1980s at George Gruhn's famous vintage guitar store in Nashville, Tennessee. This guitar still has the stock number sticker from his shop on the back of the peghead. The guitar was less than a decade old when I purchased it. The first owner used it as his regular working guitar, but I only used the instrument for practice because I was a bass player. The guitar has barely been played since I bought it. Everything on the guitar is just as it was when I purchased it. The tuners, pots, pickups, knobs, hardware, bridge, pickguard, and frets are unchanged. The frets are barely worn, and have many additional years of life left in them. The original whammy bar and the ashtray cover for the tremolo are included, along with the original hardshell Fender case with the bright orange plush lining. The plastic backplate for the tremolo cavity was removed to make stringing it easier, and is not available with the guitar, but a new replacement can be purchased easily. The case has a few stains on the inside, but is otherwise in great condition.
You Can Hear What You're Buying
I think you should be able to hear what you're buying when you shop for a guitar, so we've recorded a video of the guitar that shows that all the electronics are in working order, that there are no buzzes on the neck, and that showcases all the fantastic tones you can get out of this beautiful instrument. Unlike other listings, you can buy with confidence knowing what the guitar sounds like. Priced for Quick SaleAccording to the Official Vintage Guitar Magazine Price Guide, a 1974 Olympic White Stratocaster is worth between $3800 and $4200, more than any other color except black (Clapton's guitar)There's a big drop-off in value in the years following 1974, with a 1976 appraised at less than half of what this 1974 is worth. This 1974 Fender Stratocaster in Olympic White is sure to continue to increase in value as the years go by, and has a tone and a stage presence that can't be duplicated with a new guitar. This guitar is priced for quick sale at only $2495, with free shipping to anywhere in the continental United States. Don't miss out on one of the last truly collectible Stratocasters ever made!

Guitar Museum featuring rare instruments opens in Nashville
(27 Apr 2017) RARE GUITARS ON DISPLAY IN NASHVILLE
A unique collection of rare guitars is now on display in Nashville at Belmont University.
Bluegrass musician and singer Ricky Skaggs and country star Vince Gill got a chance to play some of the rare instruments during the grand opening of the Gallery of Iconic Guitars on Tuesday (25 APRIL 2017).
The collection belonged to the late Steven Kern Shaw, who was a philanthropist and the grandson of Jerome Kern who was one of America's foremost composers of musical theater and popular music.
Some of the instruments on display include: a 1939 Martin D-45, one of only 91 made; a 1923 Gibson F-5 mandolin, signed by designer Lloyd Loar; and a 1887 Martin 0-28.
It's really amazing quality stuff, said Skaggs, an avid collector himself. In my whole lifetime, I have only held three D-45 pre war guitars. Two of them are in here. It's really amazing.
Gill said what is unique is that Belmont University will allow these instruments to be played, not just stuck behind glass.
If you are a nut for instruments, they are not only beautiful to look at, Gill said. For the opportunity for some of these kids are going to get to maybe use some of these instruments, record with some of these instruments and get a real understanding of what a fine fine instrument can do.
Gill said that while these instruments weren't famous for who owned them or played them like instruments at the Country Music Hall of Fame, they are famous as works of art.
They are important to our history, Gill said. They paint our history, they tell our history just as much as the songs that were written on them and the songs that were sung on them.
Skaggs said the gallery allows musicians to get very close to the instruments, even close enough to smell them.
You can actually go up and smell, Skaggs said. You can put your nose in the hole, which I love to do. You can smell these instruments. There's something about smell that takes you back to your grandma's attic, you know, a hope chest or something like that. But these instruments, I don't think they want people to just come up and grab them cause there is security here. But to be able to be close enough to actually see the grain in the instrument, to see the bridge and to see all these things, the intricacies of how they were made and designed. And to look at them and compare them with other guitars. And how just a slight little difference of wood, different carving the top, makes a vast amount of difference in how they sound.
