TAKAYAMA, JAPAN - Morning Markets, Takayama Old Town - Are you looking for Things to Do in Takayama as part of your Japan trip in 2017?
Takayama is a fantastic small Japanese City located in the Hida Mountains, otherwise known as the Northern Japanese Alps. Takayama provides a complete contrast from large and loud, more well known Japanese cities such as Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto and I would highly suggest you take the time to visit!
In this video, First World Traveller shows you around some places to visit in Takayama -
- Miyagawa Morning Market
- Sanmachi Suji (Takayama Old Town)
- Kitayama Walk
- Sakura Hachiman-gu Shrine
Additionally, try out some local Japanese street food or local food from Senbei (rice crackers), Takoyaki (octopus balls) and Taiyaki (fish shaped dessert snack) at the morning markets, which provide a great opportunity to pick up some local produce, from fruit & beg to honey, as well as arts and crafts.

[360º VR] Chichibu Night Festival | JAPAN Forward
The Chichibu Night Festival is one of the top three float festivals in Japan, the others being the Kyoto Gion Festival and the Hida Takayama Festival. It is the principal festival at Chichibu Shrine, the main shrine in Saitama's Chichibu region.
Six floats (including 2 flower parasols) decorated with gorgeously colored carvings bring brilliant splashes of color to winter-time Chichibu.
On the evening of the 3rd, the paper lanterns decorating the floats are lit, casting a golden hue against the dusk sky.
The Chichibu Yatai Hayashi (musical accompaniment) brings the floats to life as they are drawn in procession up Dango Hill before fireworks bring the festival to its climax.

FUSHIMI INARI SHRINE: Ten Thousand Torii Gates in Kyoto, Japan
Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) is the most popular tourist attraction in Kyoto. The ancient site enshrines Inari Okami, the Shinto god of rice, who is known as a deity of business prosperity, household and personal safety, and improvement in the performing arts. Our advice is to get up early and visit on a weekday, if possible, to beat the crowds.
The sheer number of torii gates here is mind boggling. Torii gates had become widely used by the start of the Edo period in the 1600s. Today, there are around 10,000 torii gates of all sizes along the mountain paths of Fushimi Inari. Each gate has been paid for by a company or organization to give thanks for their prosperity and for good fortune in the future.
Vermilion red is considered an amulet against evil forces, and is used in many ancient palaces, shrines, and temples in Japan. At Fushimi Inari, the color expresses the bountiful harvests that Inari provides. Foxes are said to be the messengers of Inari. These foxes cannot be seen with human eyes and for that reason are often referred to as “white foxes.”

10 Things to do in Nikko Tour | Japan Travel Guide Video Transcript:
After a month in Tokyo, Nikko was everything we were hoping for! We knew we were in for a treat on the train ride over once we started seeing forests and mountains all around us and the town did not disappoint.
Nikko was the breath of fresh air we were looking for; during our visit we hiked through shrines and temples, cruised a beautiful lake at the base of a volcano, sampled some local dishes featuring tofu skin, and basically had the perfect city break.
So in this travel guide, we are going sharing some of our favourite things to do in Nikko, so you too can plan your weekend escape!
The Shinkyo Bridge you see today was constructed in 1636, but a bridge of some form has stood on this very same spot for much longer...even if its origins are a bit unclear.
Nikko is home to numerous Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples. We focused our visit on the Toshogu Shrine.
Now for a quick history lesson; the Toshogu shrine is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. This was Japan’s last feudal military government, with the shogun as its leader.
Kegon is Nikko’s most famous waterfall. It stands almost 100 meters tall and the waters that feed it comes directly from Lake Chuzenji.
We were feeling pretty hungry after all that sightseeing, so we decided to find a restaurant serving up the local specialty: yuba! Or tofu skin.
I ordered the ramen with yuba and Sam got the udon with yuba. The tofu skin was fluffy and absorbed all the flavours of the miso.
Lake Chuzenji is located at the foot of Mount Nantai. We cruised around the lake for a bit, but then got off at one of the early stops to continue onwards to Yumoto Onsen.
Yumoto is a small hot springs town that is located in part of Nikko National Park. We then enjoyed a little walk along Lake Yunoko, before hopping back on a bus to Senjougahara Moor.
The Senjogahara Marshland covers the area between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen. It offers some great hiking opportunities within Nikko National Park.
And that’s a wrap for our Nikko travel guide! This proved to be the perfect weekend escape from Tokyo. We visited everything you see here over the course of 2 days, but this place is even better if you can come for 3 or 4 nights. Nature abounds, there are countless shrines and temples to visit, plus the local cuisine was exquisite! Now you have a few ideas of things to do around Nikko when you visit. Wishing you happy travels and see you next time!
This is part of our Travel in Japan video series showcasing Japanese food, Japanese culture and Japanese cuisine.

Tokyo LOVE Show - Keep A Breast Japan official launch (乳がん早期発見啓発)
Tonight I went to the Tokyo LOVE Show - the official launch of the Keep A Breast Foundation in Japan. It is an exhibition showcasing breast casts by famous artists from around the world, with the objective of raising breast cancer awareness. My pregnant friend Carmela was a castee for the artist Hiroko Ueki (the beautiful white cast) - Hiroko describes the cast Look through the peep hole in the chest to Carmela's heart. It says I am here. It was such a beautiful warm concept, it made me cry! The casts combine sculpture, charity and personal expression. Over 100 artists from around the world contributed to the event, brought together by the curator Yasha Young, with the theme 'LOVE' chosen as a universal language.
