Japantown, San Francisco
Japantown (日本町 Nihonmachi) (also known as J-Town or historically as Japanese Town, or Nihonmachi (Japan town, in Japanese)) is a neighborhood in the Western Addition district of San Francisco, California.
The main thoroughfare is Post Street, between Fillmore Street (to the west) and Laguna Street (to the east). The Japantown neighborhood is generally considered to be bordered on the north by Bush or Pine Street, and on the south by Geary Boulevard.
Its focal point is the Japan Center, which opened in 1968,[5] and is the site of three Japanese-oriented shopping centers. The San Francisco Peace Pagoda, also at the Japan Center, is a five-tiered concrete stupa designed by Japanese architect Yoshiro Taniguchi and presented to San Francisco by the people of Osaka, Japan.
Built and settled as part of the Western Addition neighborhood in the 19th and early 20th century, Japanese immigrants began moving into the area following the 1906 earthquake.[6] (Before 1906, San Francisco had two Japantowns, one on the outskirts of Chinatown, the other in the South of Market area. After 1906, San Francisco's main Japantown was in the Western Addition, with a smaller one in the South Park area.[7]) By World War II, the neighborhood was one of the largest such enclaves of Japanese outside Japan, as it took an appearance similar to the Ginza district in Tokyo.[
In February 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066, which forced all Japanese of birth or descent, including Japanese American citizens of the United States, to be relocated from the Pacific coast and interned. By 1943 many large sections of the neighborhood remained vacant due to the forced internment. The void was quickly filled by thousands of African Americans who had left the South to find wartime industrial jobs in California as part of the Great Migration.
Following the war, some Japanese Americans returned, followed by new Japanese immigrants as well as investment from the Japanese Government and Japanese companies. However, many did not return to the neighborhood and instead settled in other parts of the city, or out to the suburbs altogether. This was further exacerbated by the city's efforts to rejuvenate the neighborhood initiated by Justin Herman in the Western Addition in the 1960s through the 1980s.[8]
In 1957, San Francisco entered in a sister city relationship with the city of Osaka, hence the nickname Little Osaka. Osaka is San Francisco's oldest sister city.[9] In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of this relationship, one block of Buchanan Street, in Japantown, was renamed Osaka Way on September 8, 2007.
Average Adams! United States Hydraulic Elevators-Japan Center (Garage 2)-San Francisco, CA
These are the only public elevators in this mall that aren't Elevator Electrics. This is the newer part of the mall and these are US elevators that probably had circle or square buttons. These also have the scratchy motor. I like the mechanical floor passing chime, but that's about it. Very basic elevators.

Japantown San Francisco Tour
My favorite spot in San Francisco is Japantown. They have great restaurants, shops, and a unique culture.
Join me on this tour to discover the many delights of Japantown!
San Francisco Japan Center サンフランシスコ日本の中心
San Francisco Japan Center, located in the heart of Japantown (aka Nihonmachi), is comprised of the Kinokuniya Building, Kintetsu Mall, and Miyako Mall, with the stunning Peace Plaza towards the middle. The Plaza, with its beautiful slate tile fountain, features the 30.5 meter (100 feet) tall Peace Pagoda, designed by world-famous Japanese architect Yoshiro Taniguchi.
Many of the stores have facades to give the center an old Japanese village look. Some restaurants feature seating in the mall to encourage social activities. Even though some parts of the mall are extremely busy, others are quiet. Much dependent on the popularity of the shops inside.
In general, over thirty years have passed since these buldings were built and they have not undergone a major renovation. Typically, this situation leads to a decline in visitors, but maybe not in San Francisco. However, Japan Center does show some some signs of its age.
Stores
You'll find many interesting and one-of-a-kind shops that sell Japanese wares. Many stores cater to the tourist, but the excellent restaurants cater to the locals. Some claim the best sushi can be found here.
A big draw is the AMC Kabuki 8, which hosts the San Francisco International Film Exposition each year.
Not be missed is the Kinokuniya Bookstore. It's the only San Francisco branch of the famous Japanese chain and carries an extensive collection of mostly Japanese books (with some English titles, too!).
Location
Japan Center is located in San Francisco CA, on Geary Blvd, between Fillmore Street and Laguna Street.

Authentic Japanese FOOD TOUR of JAPANTOWN | San Francisco, California
During my recent visit to San Francisco I decided to head to Japantown and do an all out food tour! From Sushi, to Ramen to Mochi's, here is my Japanese food guide to Japantown!
My Film Making Kit►
I started the Japanese food tour in the Peace plaza where they have a peace pagoda. Here I entered into the Japanese Center mall, which is a mix of Japanese restaurants and shops catering the Japanese community of San Francisco.
I first head to OMA Sushi a small 8 seater restaurant that has a set menu. I went with the 5 pieces and a hand roll for $30. This was some of the best sushi I have ever had in my life!
Next I had a Matcha Float Frappe at Premium Matcha Cafe. Matcha is green tea, you can get it in a float, frappe, as ice cream. It is so bomb! You have to try this!
For the main course I headed to Marufuku Ramen. This place is famous for having some of the best Ramen in San Francisco. Chinese style noodles served in a meat based broth with tons of veggies. You can have it spicy or no spice. The best part of the Ramen was the broth, super delicious!
Lastly I headed to Benkyodo to try some Mochi's. This bakery is over 100 years old. A Mochi is a rice dessert that is gummy and very delicious! I tried three mochi's and they all blew me away! It's like a rice pudding ball.
Next time you visit San Francisco, head out to Japantown and eat some of the best Japanese food outside of Japan! If you liked this video, please give me a thumbs up, leave me a comment below and subscribe to my channel!

Japantown, also known as Nihonmachi, is a compact historic enclave in the Western Addition. Large indoor/outdoor complexes house an assortment of sushi, ramen and shabu-shabu restaurants, plus specialty grocery stores, kitschy gift shops, karaoke bars and Asian-style day spas. A courtyard plaza with a striking, 5-tiered Peace Pagoda regularly hosts community events such as the annual Cherry Blossom Festival.
Japantown (also known as J-Town or historically as Japanese Town, or Nihonmachi (Japan town, in Japanese)) is a neighborhood in the Western Addition district of San Francisco, California. The main thoroughfare is Post Street, between Fillmore Street (to the west) and Laguna Street (to the east). The Japantown neighborhood is generally considered to be bordered on the north by Bush or Pine Street, and on the south by Geary Boulevard.

The area is home to Japanese cuisine (and some Korean and Chinese) restaurants, supermarkets, indoor shopping malls, hotels, banks and other shops, including one of the few U.S. branches of the large Kinokuniya bookstore chain. Most of these businesses are located in the commercial Japan Center of the neighborhood, in a large shopping mall built in the 1960s as part of urban renewal efforts and is run by Japanese retailer Kintetsu.
The Cherry Blossom Festival takes place over the course of two weekends. During the first weekend, the Northern California Cherry Blossom Queen Program takes place at the Kabuki Theatre, where women of Japanese/Japanese-American descent are chosen to represent, learn about, and serve their community. During the Sunday parade, the queen and princesses are presented on a float.
