24 Hours in John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Oregon
Under the hills and valleys of eastern Oregon is one of the richest fossil beds on Earth, an ancient record spanning most of the Age of Mammals. Though the fossil organisms are long gone, their descendants may be living in our own backyards. The fossils beds expose extraordinarily well preserved and organized fossils. The finds here reveal clues to our past, present and future.

Grant's Getaways: John Day Fossil Beds
This week I took a colorful hike through time through one of Oregon's most spectacular landscapes -- the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.
From its headwaters in the Blue Mountains to its salmon-rich confluence with the grand Columbia more than 225 miles away, the John Day River twists, turns, and carves a path through a 14,000-acre treasure trove of colorful volcanic history and some of the world's most important fossil beds.

FOSSIL, OR. In remote region 75 miles east of Bend, Oregon, you can travel back in time millions of years…by visiting the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. There is more than 50 million years of geologic time preserved here stretching between the time when dinosaurs became extinct up until the ice age of the mammoths and mastodons.
That treasure trove of information is locked in the fossil record found at John Day Fossil Bed National Monument. Paleontologists continue to work in the field throughout all of the units so they can learn more about our past. In turn their work may yield clues to our planets future.

EPISODE DESCRIPTION
In this episode, Noah travels to Eastern Oregon and explore the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. It’s here that thousands of feet of Columbia River Basalt are exposed by a major erosional event, most likely the global flood. John Day Fossil Beds are also have the largest collection of mammal fossils in the world. These fossils are supposed millions of years old, yet they show very little change from present mammals. Noah will dig for fossils and explore cool locations such as the Palisades, the Painted Hills, and Picture Gorge. He’ll show strong evidence for this area being formed and eroded quickly just a few thousand years ago.

Learn How:
-What conditions near the end of the Flood would have caused massive amounts of magma to escape to the surface and build layers quickly
-There is very little evidence for major evolution in the fossil record
-The Flood would have caused chaos in the layers of sediments
-The Flood explains water and wind gaps
-Fossil leaves show quick burial and fossilization at the beginning of the Flood

John Day Fossil Beds - Oregon
A road trip to central Oregon brought us to the John Day Fossil Beds. The monument is divided into 3 areas. While there visit the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center. Watch fossils being preserved and look at the wide variety of exhibits. Very enjoyable and informative. Take a side trip 1/4 mile up the road to the James Cant Ranch. Just a great place to look around and have a picnic. Well worth the trip.
