FOSSIL, OR. In remote region 75 miles east of Bend, Oregon, you can travel back in time millions of years…by visiting the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. There is more than 50 million years of geologic time preserved here stretching between the time when dinosaurs became extinct up until the ice age of the mammoths and mastodons.
That treasure trove of information is locked in the fossil record found at John Day Fossil Bed National Monument. Paleontologists continue to work in the field throughout all of the units so they can learn more about our past. In turn their work may yield clues to our planets future.
Flying High Above the John Day River!
The John Day River system in northeast Oregon includes more than 500 river miles and is one of the longest free flowing river systems remaining in the United States. The BLM administers two Federal Wild & Scenic River (WSR) segments within the river system; the mainstem John Day River – 147.5 miles, and the South Fork John Day River – 47 miles. BLM land makes up about the 47 percent of the total river miles in the WSR segments, with State and private lands making up the remainder.
The BLM-managed 147-mile segment from Service Creek to Tumwater Falls offers exceptional steelhead and warm-water bass fishing; whitewater boating; and archeological, historical and paleontological values. The John Day flows through a number of colorful canyons, broad valleys, and truly breathtaking terrain!

The painted hills get all the attention, but there’s a lot more to central Oregon’s famous fossil beds.
A River Dammed
Over 400 dams impound the Columbia and its tributaries, the most hydroelectrically engineered river system on Earth. Water flows freely for a little over 50 miles of the non-tidal Columbia’s 745-mile length in the United States. Only two of its major tributaries - the John Day river in Oregon and the Salmon River in Idaho - remain undammed. The river has been almost completely abstracted; water released for purposes other than mechanical work is referred to as “spill”, suggesting such events are both accidental and temporary.

Cottonwood Canyon - Oregon Springtime Desert Hiking [4K] | Wild Equestria (Episode 5)
For our first 2018 day hike, we headed to Cottonwood Canyon to hike the Pinnacles Trail. The 10.5 mile path wound over desert sagebrush steppes, rocky cliffs, outcroppings, and colorful, gently rolling washes along the John Day River. Along the way, we saw three rattlesnakes on the trail! Given that we were there so early in the spring, the desert was rather ironically lush and green, lol. Portions of the trail were literally carved into (read:inside) the cliff-sides. The Pinnacles are a set of basalt pillars at the end of the trail–I filmed Flutterbat and Twilight next to these pillars (seen towards the end of the video). Also, first time really getting to use my new gimbal. Absolutely love it!

This mini-series follows our journey as we bring ponies to every corner of the west, in the spirit of the world renowned Ponies Around the World event. As part of a larger, ongoing filming project, we've hiked across hundreds of miles with the ponies in tow, photographing and filming them everywhere we go.

Filmed across the west coast of the United States and Canada, this film will feature timelapse and cinematic footage with one or more My Little Pony figurines. This entire concept is based on the annual event, Ponies Around the World, by the pony news site Equestria Daily.
The final film will be in 4K, will include stunning timelapses, and will be over 30 minutes in length.

Epic Road Trip Across Oregon!
This road trip goes 1200 miles over 11 days, 16 hikes, and six campsites. All the way from the Cascade Mountains, through Central Oregon and Eastern Oregon. Deschutes River, Crooked River, Smith Rock, Painted Hills, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Oregon Trail, Hells Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of the Snake River”), Imnaha River, Wallowa Mountains, Zumwalt Prairie, Nez Perce Homeland Project, Blue Mountains, and the Ochoco Mts. Visit habitats ranging from mountains, grasslands, high desert, and shrub steppe. Music is the Earl Klugh Trio (“I’ll Remember April” and “Bewitched”).

Motorcycle trip | Wallowa Lake, Joseph Oregon
Father and Son motorcycle trip to Wallowa Lake on Suzuki V-strom 650's through curvy roads from Portland/Newberg to Mollala, along the Clackamah River South and connecting with 42 North through the back country. Passing Maupin, Shaniko, Antelope, Fossil, Spray, Monument and Long Creek. We stayed overnight in John Day, then continued east to Ukiah, La Grande, Imbler, Elgin and ending up in Joseph Oregon.

Area Facts:
Wallowa Lake is a ribbon lake 1 mile (1.6 km) south of Joseph, Oregon, United States, at an elevation of 4,372 ft (1,333 m). Impounded by high moraines, it was formed by a series of Pleistocene glaciers. On the south end of the lake is a small community made up of vacation homes, lodging, restaurants, as well as other small businesses. Wallowa Lake has been used for recreation since at least 1880
