Kam Wah Chung Co in John Day Oregon
Music by Brian Power -
I visit the Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site in John Day Oregon. Such an amazingly preserved home of two Chinese immigrants that were once part of the third largest Chinatown in America. Then we head over the Canyon City to see the Wheeler County Historical Museum. Petey and I take a walk along the John Day River in the Clyde Holliday State Park.

Kam Wah Chung & Company
Kam Wah Chung located in John Day Oregon is a historical park that has one of the most extensive Chinese collections of ancient medicines. The building is adjacent to John Day City Park where we walk our dogs. We were fortunate enough to catch an exclusive tour of Kam Wah Chung one afternoon and I attempted to video it. The State of Oregon has an interpretative center down the street and gives tours on an hourly basis. If you ever find yourself in John Day Oregon, this is a great tour to take.

Chinese Frontier Herbalist (Crossing East)
Frontier Herbalist Doc Hay and his business partner and friend Lung On ran the Kam Wah Chung store and medical practice in the small Eastern Oregon town of John Day from shortly after the Gold Rush into the 1950's. Unlike in other parts of the country where lynching and massacres of Chinese immigrants were the norm, these two men were respected members of the community and are still remembered fondly by John Day residents.
This flash movie was created as part of the Crossing East Asian American history series which won the 2006 Peabody award and ran on 230 public radio stations. For more info go to crossingeast.org. The audio originally aired on NPR's Day To Day.

Grant's Getaways: The Kayak Shack
A group of teens have created a business that's paying off for tourists and the Waldport — one paddle stroke at a time.
When it comes to summertime work, teens are lucky if they can find anything to help pay their bills -- from washing cars, slinging burgers or perhaps bagging groceries at the neighborhood store. So imagine the surprise that many visitors to the Oregon Coast experience when they cross paths with a group of teens who have created a successful summer recreation business.
The Kayak Shack on Alsea Bay in Waldport may provide a pathway for the youngster's futures and help their community too.
The beach is the last place you'd expect to find teens in school but The Kayak Shack is unlike any class most high schoolers take because it's also a job that they create.
