Koyna river at Tapola is a famous tourist spot specially during monsoon. One can take a boat ride by hiring a small or large boat depending upon group size and take a tour of the magnificent Koyna river which is approx 130km long that is a part of Krishna River which originates in Mahabaleshwar, Satara district, western Maharashtra. Unlike most of the other rivers in Maharashtra which flow East-West direction, the Koyna river flows in North-South direction. The Koyna River is famous for the Koyna Dam and the Koyna Hydroelectric Project.

The Koyna Dam is one of the largest dams in Maharashtra, India. It is a rubble-concrete dam constructed on Koyna River which rises in Mahabaleshwar, a hillstation in Sahyadri ranges. It is located in Koyna Nagar, Satara district, nestled in the Western Ghats on the state highway between Chiplun and Karad.
The main purpose of the dam is hydroelectricity with some irrigation in neighboring areas.

Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary and natural World Heritage Site, which is located in Satara district of the Indian state of Maharashtra. The sanctuary is nested in the Western Ghats, covering an area of around 423.55 km2 (163.53 sq mi), and elevations ranging from 600 to 1,100 m (2,000 to 3,600 ft). It was notified in 1985 as a wildlife sanctuary situated in Maharashtra. It forms the northern portion of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, with Chandoli National Park forming the southern part of the reserve.

Vasota Fort Trek | The Gem of Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary
Vasota (Vasota Jungle Trek) also known as Vyaghragad (fortress of the Tiger) is a hill fort in the Satara region of Maharashtra. A 2-hour hike will take you to the top of this fort, most of the trail is through the jungle. One has to reach Bamnoli and then catch a boat which will take one and half hour to reach the starting point of Vasota trek. It is an easy trek and the boat ride along the Koyna backwaters is the cherry on the cake.
One can camp overnight along the Koyna dam and enjoy nature.
I did this trek with a trekking group from Mumbai called Ramblers India.
