It is said there are about 85,200 shrines and 77,600 temples in Japan. They are a part of Japanese culture as well as Japanese daily life style. I would like to take you on a little tour to such power spots.

Walking in Kumano City, Mie Prefecture, Japan
Kumano is a remote vacation location unspoiled by tourism and ripe with natural beauty. There are many sections of the ancient pilgrimage route throughout Mie and Wakayama but there is only one Kumano City.

Japan Trip: Walking through the Pilgrim Trails in Kumano, Wakayama 13
Japan Trip: Walking through the Pilgrim Trails in Kumano, Wakayama 13
The Kumano area (熊野), well known for its religious history, is located around the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula which is about 100 kilometers south of Osaka. The area spans Wakayama and Mie Prefectures; however, most of the religious sites and points of interests are located in Wakayama Prefecture.
The Kumano Sanzan: Hongu Taisha, Nachi Taisha and Hayatama Taisha, are the center of this area. Pilgrims have traveled to the Kumano Sanzan utilizing traditional pilgrim trails, called Kumano Kodo, for over 1000 years. Though parts of the trail are dangerous, it is believed approaching the shrines by these old-fashioned routes is important in the religious process. Furthermore, in 2004, the Kumano Kodo was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With the title of The Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range, the designation also includes neighboring Koyasan, Yoshino and Ominesan.
This region is blessed with religious and historical value from the three shrines. The Shinto Sun Goddess' great grandson, Jimmu, came to Kumano to unify the country as Japan's first Emperor. In addition, Kumano is referred to The Land of the Dead, as it is believed Shinto spirits and family ancestors dwell here after they pass away.
Towns and cities dot the Kii Peninsula’s coastline, combining Kumano's ancient history with present day life. Towns such as Shirahama or Katsura offer its visitors relaxing hot springs bath. Others, such as Kumano City or Kushimoto feature beautiful coastal scenery for their visitors to experience.

Omikoshi 5/Opening Ceremonies
For most of the year, the spirits of Japan's Shinto temples reside quietly. On special occasions, however, a Shinto portable shrine—the omikoshi—houses the spirits and is paraded through the temple neighborhood. Omikoshi means a litter of the gods, and is an elaborate wooden structure adorned with a lacquered gable roof, carried on long beams inserted into its base.
The shinto parade of the omikoshi is a boisterous affair. Fortified by copious amounts of sake, the carriers chant energetically and bear their sacred burden in a rolling, rocking gait. As the parade sways through the streets, the crowd applauds as the omikoshi dips and tilts during the procession. At the close of the festival the omikoshi is returned to its temple in the ritual of kami-okuri, ensuring the spirits are safely home once again.Omikoshi carriers customarily wear hanten or happi, waist-length jackets emblazoned with daimon, designs that incorporate the logos of town associations or companies.

San-Bon-Jime @ Sushi Summit
San-Bon-Jime is a traditional Japanese custom of closing a meeting. This San-Bon-Jime was let by Yoshi Tome, the proprietor of Sushi Ran in Sausalito, California, at the Sushi Summit held in San Francisco on May 21, 2005. The clapping consists of three sets of 10 claps each, in a 3-3-3-1 pattern, with each set preceded by a shout - yoooh. Following the third and final set the leader thanks the crowd with a hearty arigato gozaimashita!
