New Zealand Campervan Holiday 2008: Matariki Hangi and Concert Rotorua
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE!
One of the highlights of a stay in Rotorua is a Maori concert and hangi. We've been to the Matariki performance three times on different visits and think its great, as well as being good value for money.
Held at the Novatel Hotel, bookings are made at the Tourist Centre, where there are many other choices of great things to do. Rotorua is much more than steam and smells.

Maori Cultural Performance New Zealand
Māori cultural performance at Auckland Museum
Experience a vibrant glimpse of Māori culture in an engaging performance which takes you on a journey through the story of Aotearoa New Zealand and Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. The Museum's performance is recognised as being one of the best in New Zealand and culminates with a spine-tingling version of the world-famous haka.

Tamaki Maori Village - Rotorua, New Zealand ( Hangi Preparation)
Hāngi (Māori pronunciation: [ˈhaːŋi]) is a traditional New Zealand Māori method of cooking food using heated rocks buried in a pit oven. It is still used for special occasions.
To lay a hāngi or put down a hāngi involves digging a pit in the ground, heating stones in the pit with a large fire, placing baskets of food on top of the stones, and covering everything with earth for several hours before uncovering (or lifting) the hāngi

We had a trip to Rotorua for 3 days 2 nights. On the second night we had a chance to have Hāngi, the traditional food at Matariki restaurant in Novotel. After the dinner, there was a Māori concert with these gorgeous sound and rhythm. I do love this!

City Description:
Rotorua, a town set on its namesake lake on New Zealand's North Island, is renowned for its geothermal activity and Maori culture. In Te Puia’s Whakarewarewa Valley, there are bubbling mud pools and the 30m-tall Pohutu Geyser, which erupts many times daily. It’s also home to a living Maori village and the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, with traditional wood carving and weaving schools.Archaeological excavations at buried Te Wairoa Village document its destruction in an 1886 volcanic eruption. Run as commercial ventures, Maori villages such as Mitai and Tamaki offer traditional song and dance performances, hangi feasts and visits to glow worms and clear rivers. The Tudor-style Rotorua Museum in the city’s Government Gardens traces the history of the indigenous Te Arawa people and European settlers. Mountain-biking and hiking trails wind through local redwood forests. The region’s lakes and rivers offer white-water rafting, kayaking and boat trips.
Weather and Events:
A steady stream of visitors arrive in Rotorua Dec–Apr, the warm months, with peak travel in the Dec–Jan summer holidays. Winter (Jun–Aug) is mild. The Rotorua Bike Festival (Feb) is focused around a series of biking competitions. Matariki, the Maori New Year (Jun–Jul), is marked by traditional cultural events and hangi feasts over the course of an entire month, in mid-winter.

World On Your Plate: Maori
On Saturday, 3 July visitors to the Kai to Pie exhibition joined chef Charles Royal for a demonstration of Maori cooking followed by food tastings. A moving performance by Te Okahurangi Waaka and Andrew Baker followed the food tastings along with a 20 minute Maori Cultural performance. The kaupapa is 'Matariki', a range of bilingual waiata with explanations where appropriate. Have you ever tried pikopiko? Charles Royal shared one of his favourite recipes using Pikopiko on our blog. Check it out here . World On Your Plate is on every Saturday during Kai to Pie. See .
