Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is the fifth of the California mission's founded by Father Junipero Serra, September 1, 1772. The Mission is Located in downtown San Luis Obispo, California. Named after Saint Louis, Bishop of Toulouse, France.
Starting in 1769, Spain built a chain of 21 missions across the length of Alta California from San Diego to Sonoma as a way of gaining a foothold in the new frontier. California’s mission era ended in 1834, but you can still see the architectural legacy that endures in the state’s red tile roofs, whitewashed walls, arched colonnades, and bell towers.
The missions were built approximately 30 miles apart—about a day’s journey by horseback covering 650 miles total. All 21 of them are open to visitors and feature a gift shop and museum, and most of them hold mass on Sundays..

Hear the history of the family, the store, where their name comes from, and their philanthropic contributions to the community.
The Story of Mission San Luis
Orientation video to Mission San Luis: Florida’s Apalachee-Spanish Living History Museum and archaeological site in Tallahassee, FL, USA.
From 1656 to 1704, San Luis served as the principal village of the Apalachees and was the Spaniards' westernmost military, religious, and administrative capital in La Florida. Mission San Luis was one of over 100 mission settlements established in Spanish Florida between the 1560s and 1690s. It was home to more than 1,400 residents, including a powerful Apalachee chief and the Spanish deputy governor.
Today Mission San Luis is the only reconstructed Spanish mission in Florida. As a living history museum it is devoted to sharing the stories of its former Apalachee and Spanish residents. Knowledge of life at San Luis over three centuries ago comes from intensive archaeological and historical research—the site is the most thoroughly investigated mission in the southeastern United States.
Join us in exploring native culture and Spanish colonization in a meticulously recreated landscape!

San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden and Trails
Our mission is to honor and preserve our connection with nature.
THE GEM OF THE MORROS
The San Luis Obispo Botanical Garden is located near the Pacific Ocean on the Central Coast of California. When the Master Plan is complete, our 150 acre garden will be the only garden of its kind in the United States exclusively devoted to the ecosystems and plants of the five mediterranean climate regions of the world. Other components of the plan include miles of paved trails; demonstration, meditation, and event gardens; an explosion of art; sustainable buildings for education and research; and creative modes of transportation to provide easy access to the inspiring views throughout the Garden’s 500-foot elevation change.
OUR VISION
We endeavor to be a financially-sustaining botanical garden that displays and preserves the diverse plant life of mediterranean climate zones. We emphasize horticulture, education, research, sustainable and fire-safe practices, water conservation, children’s gardens of exploration, culinary demonstrations, life celebration gardens, health and nutrition, storytelling, and the arts.
Mission San Gabriel 2018, Ca Video & Pictures
Founded 1771. Pictures and video taken from Mission San Gabriel, California. A short video showing some of the exhibits and areas. Great place to go for history. San Gabriel has the oldest cemetery in LA county and dates back to 1778. Also there are some plants and trees in the interior grounds that were planted back in the late 1700's, like an old grapevine.

California Mission #17: San Fernando, Rey de España
Check out my visit to Mission San Fernando, Rey de España! Includes fun facts that are only available from a guided tour. Plan your own visit via their website:
San Fernando Rey de España, 17th mission
15151 San Fernando Mission Blvd., Mission Hills, 91345, (818) 361-0186
Father Lasuen named this mission in honor of King Ferdinand III of Spain in 1797. Located 25 miles north of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley, the convento is the largest freestanding adobe in California, and was originally used as a hospice for travelers. Today, the church, school, convento and workshops have all been restored to their original purposes and are open for viewing. Above the church altar is a statue of Saint Ferdinand brought from Spain 300 years ago. In the old mission plaza sits the original flower-shaped fountain.

The California missions began in the late 18th century as an effort to convert Native Americans to Catholicism and expand European territory. Spain was responsible for the missions, which scholars believe were attempts to colonize the Pacific coast of North America. There were 21 missions in all, lasting from 1769 until about 1833. The mission system brought many new cultural and religious ideas to California, though critics charge the systematic oppression of Native Americans amounted to slavery.
