The Kuleto Estate HD

Washington's wine region, geology and climate: A 360 degree wine tour with winemaker Co Dinn
Have you ever wondered how Washington's wine region is formed? Winemaker Co Dinn takes on a 360 degree tour from Snipes Mountain in Yakima to show us how the valley was carved out from glacial flood movements and what makes it the wine region it is today. Read more about the wine region on
Amanda: We are in a rather hot spot, on the side of Snipes Mountain, and we've got an amazing view that way straight down the valley. Can you give us a rundown about the geology of Yakima and how it was formed, and why we have different rocky soils up here to what we have down there?
Co Dinn: Well, that's a great question and we'll start by saying right out south west you can see basalt rocks. And the basalt rock was the result of massive outpourings of molten lava 15 million years ago. And it all flowed out and solidified into basalt, and formed a flat plain. So everything that we see, is after the basalt came - after that initial flood of basalt. So, what happened? Why is it not all basalt? Well, various things, we had a river that came through, and it was flat, the incestral Columbia (river). The current Columbia river does not go through here, but the ancestral one did and it laid down these layers of sand and river gravel that we see all around us here - at the top of Snipes Mountain. Well that begs the question, what's river gravel doing on top of a hill? And so between the time the river flowed and now, there was tectonic activity that lifted, squeezed and formed this valley. So you can see in the distance to the south, that's Horse Heaven Hills, there's a very vast east running west ridge line. And we are on an east running west ridge, Snipes Mountain. To the north are the Rattlesnake Hills. And there's an accordian-like series of east running west hills and we are standing on one of them. The gravel was uplifted during this activity and subsequently wind deposited loess (or sandy loam) was blown in and filled in the other soil, dirt and rocks and gravel and mud washed from the Cascade Mountains down the Yakima river and formed a flood plain in the valley floor. The soils in the valley floor are very deep and rich, and all kinds of crops are grown down there, mainly animal crops like hay, corn, and hops, and these are plants that are very cold hardy. They can survive cold winters, in the winter time the cold air settles. So we don't plant grapes down the valley floor. First we want very poor soils so the grapes have to struggle and produce a small berry and low vigor grape vines, and it is also warmer up here on the hill side. In the winter it is 5 degrees F warmer than it is on the valley floor, just because of the elevation. We have a level of frost protection up here, we have more heat accumulation in the summer, and we have better soil for grape vines and better drainage for the roots. So everything about this hill is conducive to very high quality wine grape viticulture and everything about the lower part of the valley is great for cropping large quantities of commodity crops, which need this soil. So if you want to grow tons of hops or hay, you do it on the valley floor, if you want to good quality Syrah right up here on the hill tops!
Amanda: Thank you for explaining to us!

Fresno's Wine Tasting Destination
The Tasting Room in Fresno has wine varieties for all patrons that walk through its doors.
San Francisco in 3 days
Our first stop was the visitor information centre, as usual, and then a coffee to look through what they gave us which included a couple of self guided walking tours. We decided to start with the Golden Gate Park so took the no5 tram from Powell. We got off early to have a look at the Haight Ashbury district which was the centre of the 60’s hippie movement, then along the “pan handle” to the park where we spotted a Red-Tailed Hawk high up in a tree. We visited the large greenhouse called the Conservatory of Flowers. We then spent some time in The Californian Academy of Sciences with its amazing Tropical Rainforest area where you walk among the birds and butterflies (we spotted Blue Macaws and Sopho Longwing butterflies among others). There is also an aquarium with an underwater glass tunnel. On top of the building is a living roof. We then looked around the De Young Museum of Fine Arts. That building also has the Hamon Observation Tower for a panoramic view of San Francisco. We passed some Segway training on the way to Stow Lake and the Redwood Memorial Grove. The next day we walked around the brightly painted Victorian houses around Alamo Square known as “The Painted Ladies” before taking one of the walking tours we were given. Starting with the Westin Hotel in Union Square we passed Ruth Asawa’s “San Francisco Fountain”, the Halide glass-walled building, into the Crocker Galleria with its roof terrace and on to China town. There we picked up the walking tour from Lonely Planets California book passed the restored Old Saint Mary cathedral and other sights such as Spofford, Ross and Jack Kerouas alleys with their graffiti and poetry. We fortified ourselves for the climb ahead with a panini from Molinari before walking up to the Lilian Coit Memorial Tower for the best views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. Back down to earth we took streetcar F to Fisherman’s Wharf and the lively Pier 39. We then had a ride on the old cable car. The last day we took a couple of busses over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito before catching the very convenient BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) back to the airport.
Kayaking in 360VR! Elkhorn Slough with Jeremy Shore
Sunny and warm-ish Saturday morning with Monterey Bay Kayak's tour guide Becca! She's awesome and so informative, you can tell that marine life is her passion.
Jeremy and I took the 9am (best time!) 1.5 hour Harbor Tour. Two person kayak allows me to take photos and video while Jeremy get a great upper body workout....LOL!!! But seriously, yes!
Early morning isn't always this sunny and clear but the water is always calmer than the afternoon. Wind starts to kick in around 10 or 11 and then paddling out of the slough gets a whole lot harder. Into a head wind!
This is a 360 video so make sure to take advantage of that and get a good look around. See something you want a closer look at? Zoom in! There are tons of southern sea otters and quite a few have pups. These animals were nearly gone from the earth due to the fur trade. Their pelt is the thickest/warmest in the animal kingdom.
Before commercial hunting began in the mid-1700s, an estimated 150,000 to 300,000 sea otters occurred in coastal waters throughout the rim of the North Pacific Ocean from northern Japan to Baja California, Mexico. In 1911, hunting was prohibited under the terms of an international treaty for the protection of North Pacific fur seals and sea otters signed by the United States, Japan, Great Britain (for Canada), and Russia. By then, only a few thousand otters remained, including a small colony of about 50 otters along the remote Big Sur coast of central California.
So pull up a chair, get your VR Viewer of choice and a set of ear buds to listen to Becca talk about this part of Northern California sea-life! All without getting wet OR sunburned! Enjoy!
