Scenes from Monterey, California, USA
The City of Monterey in Monterey County is located on the southern edge of Monterey Bay, on Central California's Pacific coast. It stands at an elevation of 26 feet (8 m) above sea level, on a land area of 8.47 sq mi (21.9 km2). The 2010 census recorded a population of 27,810.
Monterey was the capital of Alta California from 1777 to 1846 under both Spain and Mexico. It was the only port of entry for taxable goods in California. In 1846 the U.S. flag was raised over the Customs House, and California was claimed for the United States.
The city had California's first theatre, public building, public library, publicly funded school, printing press, and newspaper. The city and surrounding area have attracted artists since the late 19th century and many celebrated painters and writers have lived there. Until the 1950s, there was an abundant fishery.
Among Monterey's notable present-day attractions are the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, Fisherman's Wharf and the annual Monterey Jazz Festival.

Coast Guard Pier Fishing! 1st Sheephead Ever Caught (Monterey, CA)
I caught my first ever sheepshead at the Coast Guard Pier located near Lighthouse Ave. in Monterey, California. We were able to see the Coast Guard going out on a mission, some sea otters and enjoy the sunset.
The coast guard pier is located on Foam St next to San Carlos Beach in the beautiful Monterey Bay. We arrived late in the afternoon around 7pm and did our best to get something on the hook with our shrimp bait. I got lucky and ended up hooking onto a sheepshead that was about 8 inches so I release it back into the water.
I was using a 7 foot Ugly Stick from Shakespeare and we were using Eagle Claw Snell size 4 hooks. My set up was the lead weights at the bottom and the two hooks about six inches apart up above.

Little Known History of the Monterey Sardine Fishery
The Monterey/California sardine fishery was the largest fishery of a single fish in the history of the United States! Yet, it was never a popular fish to eat. There was a time, at the turn of the 20th century, when people ate sardines almost every day. But the sardines they were eating, came from the North Atlantic, New York State, Maine and from France. When WWI started in 1914, it cut off that fishery and a new source for sardines was needed.
Monterey sardines were introduced to the world at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Expedition. Grocery stores all over the United States bought all they could get their hands on, and the price for Monterey sardines went up and up. With the end of WWI in 1919, the fisheries in the North Atlantic reopened, and the price of Monterey sardines dropped to the point where the Monterey canneries were losing money with every sardine canned. But these canners had learned early on, the Monterey sardine was large and full of oil, and new resource was born.
