A Trip to the National WWI Museum and Memorial
On April 6th, 1917, Congress declared war on Germany, thrusting the United States into the Great War. It wasn’t until December 7th of that same year that Congress would declare war on Austria-Hungary. Between 1914 and 1918 six continents were involved in the War to End All Wars. In this time, technological advancements were being made at a record-breaking pace. The WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Missouri shows many of the advances made in this period alongside the human stories that brought the war to the home front 100 years ago.

The National World War I Museum and Memorial of the United States is located in Kansas City, Missouri. It was opened to the public as the Liberty Memorial museum in 1926. But it was designated in 2004 by the United States Congress as America's official museum dedicated to World War I.

This lecture was delivered at the National World War I Museum and Memorial's Symposium -- 1916 | Total War -- which was held in Kansas City, Mo. November 4-5, 2016.

In his presentation, The Peace Coalition that Almost Kept the U.S. from Going to War, Michael Kazin explores how various American groups zealously challenged the United States’ entry into the war. Kazin examines how President Woodrow Wilson, who promised to “keep us out of the war,” shifted the United States’ isolationist policies and ultimately declared the country’s entry into the Great War in 1917. Kazin places a special emphasis on the lesser-known individuals and groups that struggled for peace, and examines how these groups’ efforts affected Wilson’s policies before, during, and after the war. Kazin argues that although unsuccessful in their attempts to keep the United States from going to war, the various peace coalitions’ goals and values continue to be relevant today.
Michael Kazin is a Professor in the Department of History at Georgetown University where he is an expert in U.S. politics and social movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. His most recent book is American Dreamers: How the Left Changed a Nation (Knopf, 2011), which was named a Best Book of 2011 by The New Republic, Newsweek/Daily Beast, and The Progressive. He is editor of Dissent, a leading magazine of the American left since 1954. His next book, War against War: The American Fight for Peace, 1914-1918, will be published in January, 2017, by Simon and Schuster.
Prior to his position at Georgetown, Kazin served as Assistant Professor to Professor of History at the American University. In 1996, he served as John Adams Chair in American Studies at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. He has also lectured in Japan, Germany, Italy, France, Great Britain, and Russia as well as throughout the United States. Kazin is the recipient of many academic honors including: Advanced Research Collaborative, Graduate Center- City University of New York, 2013-14, a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship in 2009 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2004.

Kansas City Observes WWI Centennial
The National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City is observing the centennial of the day that the U.S. begrudgingly decided to enter the war. 3,000 visitors purchased tickets to participate in the daylong event titled In Sacrifice for Liberty and Peace. The day began with music and a video sharing the story of one soldier. By the time the conflict ended in 1918, more than 9 million people were lost in combat, including 116,000 Americans. Matt Naylor, director of the WWI Museum said, World War I may not be part of the cultural narrative, but it is a defining period of history that reshaped the U.S. and birthed the American century. This gives us an opportunity to honor that.

Panel: The First World War & American Memory - National World War I Museum
Panel held as part of the International Centennial Planning Conference, A Century in the Shadow of the Great War, hosted by the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial, March 22-24, 2013.
This interdisciplinary panel offers three closely related presentations followed by discussion. Dr. Pearl James, University of Kentucky, will introduce the notion of The New Death, a phrase coined by American writer, Winifred Kirkland to describe the peculiar horrors of the First World War and demonstrate how American modernist writers of the 1920s took up the collective American problem of justifying the violent deaths of so many young men. Mark Levitch, National Gallery of Art, will demonstrate how conflicting ideas about the war's meaning derailed plans for a national Great War memorial in Washington, D.C. Finally, Dr. Steven Trout, University of South Alabama, will place the Liberty Memorial, a powerful response to The New Death, within the context of Missouri's wartime fatalities and other prominent First World War memorials located in the Show-Me State.
