Battle of New Bern, North Carolina March 14, 1862
Battle of New Bern, North Carolina March 14, 1862
--------------
On this day in 1862, at the Battle of New Bern, Union General Ambrose Burnside captures North Carolina’s second largest city and closes another port through which the Confederates could slip supplies.
The capture of New Bern continued Burnside’s success along the Carolina coast. Five weeks earlier, he led an amphibious force against Roanoke Island between Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds. The Yankees captured the island on February 8; now Burnside moved against New Bern on the mainland. On March 13, he landed 12,000 troops along the Neuse River, 15 miles south of New Bern. Accompanied by 13 gunboats, Burnside’s army marched up river to face 4,000 Confederate troops commanded by General Lawrence O. Branch.
The city was protected by extensive defenses, but Branch did not have enough soldiers to properly staff them. He concentrated his men along the inner works a few miles downriver from New Bern. Early on the morning of March 14, Burnside’s men attacked in a heavy fog, and two of the three Yankee brigades crashed into the fortifications. General Jesse Reno’s brigade struck the weakest part of the line, where an inexperienced Rebel militia unit tried to hold off the Federals. Burnside’s third brigade joined Reno and the Confederate line collapsed. That afternoon, Union gunboats steamed into New Bern.
Union casualties for the battle were around 90 killed and 380 wounded, while the Confederates suffered approximately 60 killed, 100 wounded, and 400 captured. The conflict produced a Confederate hero, Colonel Zebulon Vance, who rescued his regiment by using small boats to bypass a bridge set afire by his comrades. Vance was elected governor of the state later that year.

The Battles for New Bern Reenactment Weekend
The Battles for New Berne reenactment weekend is being sponsored by the Rains Brothers Camp 1370 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in New Bern, NC. The reenactment will consist of two battles, one on Saturday (the Battle of New Berne) and one on Sunday (the Battle of Batchelder’s Creek). The Battle of New Berne took place March 14, 1862, and the Battle of Batchelder’s Creek took place February 1, 1864.
The reenactment is held on Historic Belair Plantation, eight miles west of New Bern. It is the last and largest brick plantation country house of the 18th century in North Carolina. It was built about 1772 and is a majestic three-story brick building, reached by a long drive, lined by lavish old cedars. Bellair was spared during the Civil War by General Burnside who was a Mason, as was the owner of the plantation. The written order to spare the plantation, dated March 20, 1862, still hangs on the wall at Bellair. The purpose of this event is to educate the public.

John Wright Stanly House Haunting (New Bern, NC.)
John Wright Stanly House Haunting
New Bern, NC
The John Wright Stanley House was built in the early 1780s.
John Wright Stanley’s home is quite famous because of the political duel with Richard Dobbs Spaight. In new bern in 1802. And John Wright Stanley winning the duel.
In the 19th century, the Stanley family's Fortune started to dwindle and their home was sold.
And some of the descendants of Richard Dobbs Spaight lived in the John Wright Stanley home and that is where many believe that all the noise is coming from, from the continued John Wright Stanley and Richard Dobbs Spaight fight.
Another theory is that Lewis Armistead who grew up in Stanley’s home who became a famous confederate general. He led the ill-fated Pickett's Charge at Cemetery Ridge in Gettysburg in 1863. He was mortally wounded behind Union lines.
After the Civil War battle in New Bern in 1862.
General Ambrose Burnside established his headquarters in the John Wright Stanley house.
Many say that Armistead Spirit has come back to rid his house of Yankee occupants.
Many who go on the tours of the house speak about being pushed or pinched by something unseen many guests have spoken of having seen a ghostly figure in the empty rooms of the home and some have even said they seen the ghostly figure of President George Washington.
It's alleged that George Washington slept in this home when he visited New Bern in 1791.
Even some of the security guards don't like to go into the house alone many have reported voices and sounds of footsteps when no one is in the home.
And many have taken photographs of the John Wright Stanley house at night and their lens capture images ghostly figures looking out the windows and all kinds of crazy weird lights in their pictures with no other light sources.
Heck, I even had an experience while I was on tour in this house. I thought I saw a ghostly figure look around the stairway at me, and as soon as I focused in on the stairway, that's when my shirt was pulled with no one standing close enough to pull my shirt.

New Bern
Here's a whimsical tour of my recent visit to historic New Bern, an important North Carolina seaport village nestled on the banks of the Neuse and Trent Rivers, just up-river from the Pamilco Sound. Fully accessible by boat, this charming, friendly, civil-minded town is most famous for its star attraction, Tryon Palace, seat of the British Colonial governement and later, briefly, North Carolina's capital city. Stroll through the downtown New Bern, its riverfront, and the Palace's truly lovely gardens with Mrs. Happy Feet, your five-minute tour guide!
