Cruise The Neuse in New Bern North Carolina!
Tropical wind batters boats in New Bern, NC
(15 Sep 2018) Winds from Tropical Storm Florence battered boats in a marina in New Bern, North Carolina, sinking at least one boat that was tied to a pier.
Items outside the water weren't safe. Several bicycles left on a bicycle rack next to the marina were strewn about as the water and wind battered those, too.

Part 6: Sailing from USVI to North Carolina: Ft Lauderdale, FL to Wilmington, NC (Video 63)
For insurance purposes we were instructed to make arrangements for the Caribbean hurricane season running from July to November.
We had to get above 30 degrees north so we decided to sail from the US Virgin Islands to the east coast of American to North Carolina.
This video includes our voyage from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Wilmington, North Carolina. There are clips from various places in Fort Lauderdale including: Hugh Taylor Birch State Park, Butterfly World, Sawgrass Mills, Hyatt's Pier 66 marina and resort and more.
We also say good bye to our guest, Kyle, who traveled with us from the US Virgin Islands to Florida - joining us for three weeks. There's a short interview with him.
There's a bit of footage of sailing in the Atlantic with no wind and very calm waters in addition to what it's like to sail up the Cape Fear River ending up in Port City Marina, Wilmington, North Carolina.
We also celebrate Simon's 50th Birthday!

NC boaters hope for the best as Florence nears
(13 Sep 2018) Boaters along the Cape Fear river in Wilmington North Carolina are securing their boats ahead of Hurricane Florence.
Well, we've taken all the canvas off, all the sails, all the all the coverings off the bimini and we've double, triple our line to the dock so we try and minimize any movement, Bill Yorde said.
Yorde and his wife are staying in a hotel next to the marina in Wilmington. He doesn't think the storm surge up the river will be that severe.
And we're, you know, down the river it's 20 some miles to the mouth of the river and the ocean. So, I don't think the storm surge is going to come from the beach side. We are down here in this well. There's a lot of big buildings around us shelter us from the wind. It's a pretty good place to be, Yorde said.
Yeah we're less worried about a Category 2 than we would be at a 4 or 5, Yorde admits
Burton Bridges plans to ride out Florence on his 60 foot wooden boat with his wife. Bridges says he is concerned about a storm surge.
Very much worried but the latest updates in the last 24 hours have I'm less worried than I was. It's where it makes landfall and where most of the winds above us, Bridges said.
The upper right quadrant as long as it stays away from us then our storm surge would be minimal. The wind, I'm not so much worried about the wind. It's just the storm surge that we're most worried about here.

Aerial Hoop at Anchor
We are on a sailing adventure from New Bern, North Carolina. We are spending the winter on our sailboat and traveling throughout the islands or Cays of the bahamas. Playing on my Aerial Hoop (Lyra) is one of my favorite things to do on our sailboat. I can mix my aerial arts and sailing together in some of the most beautiful destinations in the world. This was filmed on our boat, Seahorse, in the bahamas at sunset.

Not Very Dismal Swamp, Lake Drummond
Amazing [uh-mey-zing] - causing great surprise or sudden wonder.
I began planning this trip in my mind over two years ago. I had read stories and seen beautiful pictures of this wondrous place known to few and visited by even fewer. Over the Memorial Day weekend, Laura, Kim and I set out from home on a trip that carried us to one of the most remote and remarkable places we have yet to paddle. We camped in solitude only miles from overcrowded highways and beaches jammed full of holiday travelers. We watched a sunset whose composition was only see by the three of us and can never truly be expressed in words or pictures to anyone else.
If you have ever traveled Highway 17 between Elizabeth City, North Carolina and Chesapeake, Virginia then you probably zoomed right by in a mad dash of traffic unaware that just off the shoulder of the road obscured from view by trees and undergrowth is the Dismal Swamp Canal, the oldest continually operated man made canal in the United States.
George Washington first visited the Dismal Swamp in 1763 and suggested digging the canal from the Chesapeake Bay to the Albemarle Sound to further open up markets in Norfolk to the Carolinas. Work started in 1793 and took 12 years to complete. The 22 miles was entirely dug by hand and opened in 1805. The canal was an important route of commerce in the time before railroads and highways became major transportation modes. The Dismal Swamp Canal is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been designated a National Civil Engineering Landmark and is recognized as part of the National Underground Railroad.
From the Dismal Swamp State Park on the North Carolina side it is a 6 mile paddle north on the canal to the feeder ditch that leads to Lake Drummond. A 2 ½ mile paddle up the ditch leads to the spillway and a very well maintained area that can be used for overnight camping. An electric cable trolley can be used to haul boats over the spillway and up to lake level. The facilities include non-potable running water, electricity and flush toilets.
Once over the spillway it is only a short paddle to the lake. Once you emerge from the tree line and into the open of the lake, the view is breathtaking. On the evening we paddled out onto the lake there was no wind and the water was slick as glass interrupted only by the ripples from our boat wake and splashes from the paddles in the water. Lake Drummond is a black water lake, the color coming from high tannin content and this deep rich color causes it to be highly reflective. It is almost like looking in a mirror. Looking out across Lake Drummond it is hard to tell where heaven ends and earth begins. As you glide across the unbroken water you appear to be floating on clouds as you pass through the reflection of the sky above.
As sunset approached, the sun of the sky and its reflection in the water join together in an explosion of color that paints the mural of heaven and earth as no artist but God himself can recreate. As the sun dips below the horizon the day gives way to a twilight of bright stars scattered across earth and sky. It can only be described as amazing!
The clock is ticking, each second passing never to return. You have but one chance in one lifetime. Make sure you find that one thing you don't want to miss.
