Fort Bragg, California-Vic´s Cali 2010 Tour Day 9
Vic´s Cali 2010 Tour Day 9
The night before i arrived at Fort Bragg and checked in at a nice cozy lodge inside town.
The guy running that place was very nice, he told me about the Skunk Train and gave further tips regarding dining so i ended up at the North Coast Brewing Company:
This is a very nice place where they offer different types of beers, i took a dark syrup type beer, very strong and very good. The couple who sat next to me took a sample of 12 different beers to taste :D ..that sure looked inviting.
Having rest well the night i woke up early had a small breakfast and was ready to catch the Skunk Train leaving the depot at around 9 am.
This was the first rainy day of my trip but the weather was supposed to clear up later that day.
Episode 088 - North Coast Brewing Company Brother Thelonious
Named after - and a tribute to - the game-changing jazz musician Thelonious Monk, North Coast Brewing Company in Fort Brag, CA, puts out the Brother Thelonious Belgian Style Abbey Ale.
This beer wins in multiple ways. Every bottle sold puts money towards the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, to help young Jazz musicians get a proper music education, and the beer itself wins in character as well. Both Johnny and Dave put this in the 90s - a great flavor, if not slightly deceptive at 9.4% ABV.

1st Piece Of Japan's Tsunami Debris Found In California 2012
BY CHRIS SMITH/The Press Democrat
Sonoma Coast surfer and rock climber Darren Moffet thinks he may have found one of the first substantial pieces of Japanese tsunami debris to wash up in Northern California. It's a plastic, yellow Kirin beer crate imprinted with Japanese writing.
Moffet didn't simply pick it up off the sand. He said he used a rope to descend about 40 feet down a rugged seaside cliff a short distance south of Fort Ross.
Internet research has taught him that many such crates were swept away by the tsunami that ravaged the Kirin Brewing Co.'s plant in Sendai City in March of 2011.
Of course, Moffet, who lives near Windsor and works as a boat mechanic and carpenter, can't be sure the beer crate is tsunami debris. But his gut and research says it is.
I'm pretty confident I found the real deal, he said.
As the PD's Bob Norberg reported last week, beach walkers have begun to watch for Japanese tsunami debris along the Sonoma Coast, but specialists with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration believe it's too soon for much debris to arrive here.
Moffet may never know for sure if the Kirin crate in his home is a tiny part of the millions of tons of personal possessions and property of all kinds washed into the Pacific by the earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 15,000 people in Japan 16 months ago.
But he's satisfied it's a piece of history.

OLD RASPUTIN IMPERIAL STOUT
Old Rasputin Imperial Stout is brewed by North Coast Brewing Company, centered in Fort Bragg, California. The brewery opened up as a brewpub in 1988 under the leadership of Mark Reudrich, and he has taken North Coast from small town to big time. North Coast's beers are now distributed in 47 states and are exported across the world.
Old Rasputin is a Russian Imperial Stout. A bit of history about this style: this beer was created in the 1800's with the intent of winning over the Russian Czar. This style has a higher alcohol content, usually 8-12% ABV (alcohol by volume) and is typically aggressively malty. Old Rasputin has won several prestigious awards, including the World Beer Championship gold medal a total of seven times (1996-1999, 2004-2006).
Old Rasputin has won numerous awards, among them:
GOLD MEDAL, 1998 World Beer Championships, Chicago, IL
SILVER CUP, 1998 World Beer Cup, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
GOLD MEDAL, 1997 World Beer Championships, Chicago, IL
GOLD MEDAL, 1996 World Beer Championships, Chicago, IL
GOLD MEDAL, 1996 World Beer Cup, Vail Colorado
The bottle itself is quite imposing; featuring a mysterious bearded man and some ancient writing, you just have a foreboding feeling you are about to open a bottle of trouble. Drinker beware?
Produced in the tradition of 18th Century English brewers who supplied the court of Russia's Catherine the Great, Old Rasputin seems to develop a cult following wherever it goes. It's a rich, intense brew with big complex flavors and a warming finish.
