The Disappearing American Dialect of North Carolina
Hoi Toider, aka Ocracoke Brogue, is a dialect of American English spoken only on remote islands in North Carolina's Outer Banks. The unique accent and vocabulary developed over hundreds of years as a result of the area's isolation. Visitors often mistake the accent as foreign, but with origins dating back to the 1600s, Ocracoke Brogue is about American as it gets.

Outer Banks, NC | 10K Road Trip Vlog Day 30
We spent two days exploring the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We've heard amazing things about the islands from friends and locals, so we had to check it out for ourselves. And it did not disappoint!
From the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Bodie Island Lighthouse to the beaches and beautiful sunrises and sunsets, this was an unforgettable experience!
We camped at the Oregon Inlet Campground which is a great location for a few reasons. First, it's close to town. Just a 10-minute drive to Nag's Head and all the restaurants and amenities there. Second, it's on the beach, but protected by dunes. You walk up over the dunes right onto the beach. And third, it's inexpensive. At the time of this video (June 2017), it was only $28/night. We recommend staying here. Check out availability here:
We recognize that our experience in OBX is different from usual. Most people rent a giant beach house with their family and spend a week doing family excursions like mini-golf and the high ropes course. We, however, do not have any family here and we are on a pretty tight budget, so we did all the free and inexpensive things like camping, hanging out on the beach, and visiting lighthouses.
Here are the timestamps for the things we did and places we went to visit in Outer Banks, NC:
0:46 - Setting up Camp at Oregon Inlet Campground and exploring the beach
2:23 - Bodie Island Lighthouse (and kites)
4:36 - Sunrise on the Outer Banks
5:16 - Stars and Milky Way pictures from the beach
5:32 - Exploring another beach
6:09 - Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (climbing to the top - Isa's scared of heights so tell her how awesome she is for going up to the top!)
9:42 - Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
11:06 - Jennette's Pier and Aquarium
11:29 - Exploring another beach and saving a jellyfish
12:22 - Jockey's Ridge for sunset (absolute must-do!)
This is Day 30 and 31 of our 10,000 mile road trip across the US, but honestly our day count is getting a little fuzzy, so I'm just calling this Day 30 to keep it simple.

Ocracoke Island - Paranormal History Profile
Ocracoke Island
In July of 2006, we stopped at Ocracoke Island during our honeymoon road trip. This turned out to be the best mistake of our honeymoon, as we enjoyed the island greatly. Although this was before we were into paranormal research, we did find the island completely intriguing and were able to capture some of the interesting places in photographs.
In this video will will discus our experiences, the history of Ocracoke Island, and why we believe this location has so many reported paranormal claims.

The Carolina Brogue: Outer Banks Vocabulary
Excerpt from The Carolina Brogue, a documentary about the language and life of the North Carolina Outer Banks
Available on DVD:
------------------------------------------------
ABOUT THE CAROLINA BROGUE
The North Carolina Outer Banks is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Eery year millions of visitors descend on coastal towns from Manteo and Kitty Hawk to Ocracoke and Harkers Island, while some villages along the sound remain relatively isolated. Most of the early residents of the Outer Banks came south by boat from Tidewater Virginia and the eastern shores of Maryland, and many of them had originally come from Southwest England and the Ulster province of Ireland. Features of British and Scots-Irish English have been retained in the local dialect, though the language developed independently to take on a distinctive regional characters. This dialect is now recognized as a part of our national heritage and a vital part of coastal culture.
Rooted in twenty years of fieldwork, research and community ties, The Carolina Brogue is a candid portrait of contemporary life on the Carolina Coast, and a look at one of the most unique dialects in the world.

Cape Hatteras Lighthouse & North Carolina Outer Banks Ferry System
Cape Hatteras lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in North America! The lighthouse located on Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks in the town of Buxton, North Carolina and is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Our day 5 excursion starts here. The lighthouse stands at 193' high and has 257 stairs to the top. Wish me luck! After visiting the famous lighthouse we took 2 ferries, the Swan Quarter Ferry and the Hatteras Ocracoke Ferry.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse protects one of the most hazardous sections of the Atlantic Coast. Offshore of Cape Hatteras, the Gulf Stream collides with the Virginia Drift, a branch of the Labrador Current from Canada. This current forces southbound ships into a dangerous twelve-mile long sandbar called Diamond Shoals. Hundreds and possibly thousands of shipwrecks in this area have given it the reputation as the Graveyard of the Atlantic.

The Outer Banks Ferry System
Decades ago, one of the only ways to access some of the most secluded areas of the Outer Banks was via a ferry, and this tradition carries on today for thousands if not millions of visitors who want to travel to some of coastal North Carolina's most famous and off-the-map locales.
A small handful of islands on the Outer Banks, specifically Knotts Island, Ocracoke Island and Portsmouth Island, are veritably cut off from the rest of the world. With no roads that cross over the Currituck or Pamlico Sound, these regions can only be accessed by boat, making them dependent on the NC Ferry system for transportation on and off the islands.

Wild Horses at North Carolina Outer Banks
Wild Spanish Mustangs at Carova Beach, Corolla, North Carolina
In late September, 2019, we drove to Knotts Island, located along the western shores of the Back Bay in northeastern North Carolina. From the marina, we met up with our local guide, who took us via small powered boat across the Back Bay to the remote community of Carova Beach, on the Outer Banks. Carova Beach can only be reached by boat or by 4x4 vehicles. The isolated community is surrounded by various National Wildlife Refuges, and it is here that one of the largest herds of wild Spanish Mustangs reside. Our guide showed us around the area by boat and by 4wd truck. We appreciated the fantastic scenery of the area as well as observing dozens of wild horses. We even briefly entered False Cape State Park in Virginia.

Outer Banks, NC - RV Living
We finally made it to the Outer Banks!!! For us, this was one of those places that held an almost mystical value and had been on our radar to visit since the day we purchased our Airstream, so we are doing our happy dance (internally) to have this dream become a reality. To keep things within our budget we stay in two of the areas four Hatteras National Seashore campgrounds - Frisco Campground and Oregon Inlet Campground. We take the ferry over to the island of Ocracoke, which ends up being a saga in itself, but once we get there we thoroughly enjoy our time exploring the village, lighthouse, campground, and beach. We also visit the Wright Brothers Memorial and learn about man's first flight, Jockey Ridge State Park to climb the East Coast's tallest sand dune, and have an unparalleled donut experience thanks to Duck Donuts. We meet up with friends where TJ has the opportunity to do some fishing while Bri climbs the Bodie Lighthouse. In the end, we are glad for all the detours that brought us here at just the right time!

Outer Banks Travel Guide: Best Places to Visit in the Carolinas.
The Outer Banks are barrier islands off the coast of the U.S. state of North Carolina, separating the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland. Their open-sea beaches, state parks and shipwreck diving sites make them a popular holiday destination. Roanoke Island was the site of England’s first settlement in the New World, an endeavor sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh.
