Yakuyoke no Daija - Japanese Snake Festival
Yakuyoke no Daija is festival in the outskirts of Tokyo where a straw snake mikoshi (portable shrine) is paraded about to ward off evil. During the Edo Period (1603-1867) a plague was raging in the Setagaya area and a man had a dream that the god of Okusawa Shrine instructed him to make a large snake of straw and paraded it around the area. He and others did so and the plague abated.
The festival is held on the second weekend of September.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Nogi Shrine〜
This shrine honours General Nogi Maresuke, a famed commander in the Russo-Japanese War. Hours after Emperor Meiji's funerary procession in 1912, Nogi and his faithful wife committed ritual suicide, following their master into death. An antiques flea market is held on the shrine grounds on the fourth Sunday of each month (9am to 4pm).

Serpent cure the disease! Okusawa shrine

One of Tokyo’s most unconventional green spaces, Todoroki Valley is located just 20 minutes away from Shibuya Station and in the center of the densely populated Setagaya Ward.
Unlike many other places in Japan, Todoroki Valley is a simple walking trail adjacent to the Yazawa River and surrounded by a very dense forest that totally shields it from one of Tokyo’s busiest roads, Kan-Pachi Dori.
While the 1.2km long walking trail of the Todoroki Valley is a pure bliss, it is only at the end of the voyage that you can discover yet another hidden wonder with the Todoroki Fudo temple. Here you will be able to enjoy some delicious Mochi (Japanese rice sweets) and Ramune (Lemonade) as well as having the opportunity to let the gods hear your prayers and wash away your sins.

Travel Japan - Quiet Neighborhood
This is part of a series of 1080p High Definition videos I shot while vacationing in Japan. I wanted to capture a sense of the real sights and sounds of Japan.
Many Japanese homes don't have big yards, but they do amazing landscaping with what they do have. I shot this with my canon 7d and the opteka steadicam and 10-22mm canon wide angle lens.
