Old Sacramento - Things to Do in Sacramento | California Travel Tips
Veronica Hill of California Travel Tips offers a guided tour of Old Sacramento State Historic Park in Sacramento, CA. Established in 1849, the Old Sacramento district was formed as eager miners, bankers and businessmen arrived for California's Gold Rush. Today, there are 53 historic Spanish-style buildings to explore, and many have been faithfully restored.
Old Sacramento attractions include the 1851 Big Four House, named for the founders of the First Transcontinental Railroad; and the 1853 B. F. Hastings Building, which once housed the Pony Express terminal and California's Supreme Court. During Sacramento's boom years, miners and pioneers flocked to the Eagle Theatre, which was established in 1849. This was the first permanent theater in California, and is rumored to be haunted by its former owner.
Set on 28 acres and roughly eight city blocks, Old Sacramento is packed with activities. You can tour Sacramento by electric bicycle or horse and carriage, explore the Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum, or hop aboard the California State Railroad Museum Sacramento Southern Railroad for a 40-minute train ride.
Old Sacramento was the terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad and the last stop on the Pony Express. At 2nd and J streets, you'll find the Pony Express Monument, which commemorates the 1,900-mile mail route from Missouri to Sacramento. Another monument honors Theodore Judah, the engineer who helped design the first Transcontinental Railroad.
In 1862, a record-breaking rainstorm flooded Sacramento, causing the city to raise the streets up to 14 feet by the 1870s. Underground Tours are offered through the Sacramento History Museum, where you can explore the legends that lurk beneath the city sidewalks; or you can check out Pioneer Park, which offers a glimpse at the lower levels of the city.
For a unique overnight, hang your hat at The Delta King, which is docked on the Sacramento River waterfront. This 1920s riverboat cruised between San Francisco and Sacramento until the 1940s and is one of the most unique and charming hotels in Sacramento. In 1982, the Delta King was restored to the tune of $9 million, and now boasts modern hotel rooms, a theater, wine school and two charming Old Sacramento restaurants.
One thing to remember — most of Old Town is metered parking, so you'll need some change to park. Change machines are located on almost every city block.

Old Sacramento Waterfront (November 2018)
These 28 acres on the Sacramento’s historic waterfront were the site of both tragedy — fire and flood — and triumph — the raising of the streets, the founding of the Transcontinental Railroad, the terminus of the Pony Express, and the home of California’s first thriving business district, fueled by gold, agriculture and the river.
Due to past and current efforts by the State of California, private and public museums, individuals, business, the City and County of Sacramento, the Historic Old Sacramento Foundations, scores of volunteers, and many others, Old Sacramento lives on as thriving shopping and entertainment district as well as a global tourist destination.

Old Sacramento State Historic Park is the historic region of Sacramento, California, which has been designated as a state park. It is generally referred to as Old Sacramento, or Old Sac, and since the 1960s has been restored and developed as a significant tourist attraction. All of it is included in the Old Sacramento Historic District, a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.
The city of Sacramento grew up in the mid-nineteenth century as a development from Sutter's Fort. However, the Fort was some way from the Sacramento River, which was the main means of transport to the coast of California, and what was to become the modern city developed along the waterfront.
Before Sacramento's extensive levee system was in place, the area flooded quite regularly. Because of this, the city's streets were raised a level. Most of the sidewalks and storefronts have been filled in, however many tunnels still remain throughout Old Sacramento and the downtown area.
By the 1960's, with the construction of Interstate 5, the area had become cut off from the rest of Sacramento and fell into disrepair. A large effort was made to secure the area's future as an outdoor living history center similar to Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. Several historically significant buildings were moved or reconstructed. Those that were beyond repair were demolished.[2]
Today, the State Historic Park covers the area between the river frontage and Interstate 5, between I Street and the Capitol Mall. Virtually all the buildings in this area date from the 19th century, the most notable from immediately after the disastrous fire of 1852, and show a reasonable approximation to their original appearance, though they have required varying degrees of reconstruction to restore to them to that state. However, few if any are in their original use, most of them now housing restaurants, gift shops, or other businesses catering to tourists.[3]
Old Sacramento State Historic Park attracts over 5 million visitors annually. Regular events include the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, Gold Rush Days , New Years Eve events, and Mardi Gras.
[edit]
Notable buildings include:
* B. F. Hastings Building, the National Historic Landmarked western terminal of the Pony Express and the first location of the California Supreme Court
* Big Four House, a National Historic Landmarked building constructed through the joint efforts of California's railroad pioneers: Collis Huntington, Mark Hopkins, Leland Stanford and Charles Crocker, known as The Big Four.
* The Lady Adams Building is the oldest building in Old Sacramento and is California Historical Landmark No. 603.
* Sacramento Engine Company No. 3, the oldest remaining firehouse in Sacramento
* Old Sacramento Schoolhouse Museum
* The Eagle Theatre, which only survived from 1849 to 1850 but has been reconstructed
The first two are also individually designated National Historic Landmarks.
The district contains many memorials to the founders of the city and of the California and transcontinental railroad and other transport systems, including the Theodore Judah monument and the Pony Express Statue.
[edit]
Old Sacramento is the site of the California State Railroad Museum, the California State Military Museum, the Sacramento History Museum, the Wells Fargo History Museum and the Old Sacramento Interpretive Center.
Other attractions available for visitors include rides in horse drawn carriages, historic trains from the former Central Pacific Railroad passenger station, and cruises on historic riverboats. A historic sternwheel riverboat, the Delta King, is moored in the river and serves as a hotel, restaurant and theater.
The Sacramento Valley Rail Station is just a short walk away.
The Old Sacramento Historical Foundation manages several programs to highlight the history of the city, including historical reenactments by costumed docents, as well as tours of Old Sacramento's underground level. During October, there is also a special Halloween themed ghost tour.
Every Labor Day weekend, Old Sacramento holds its annual Gold Rush Days. During this time, the paved streets are covered with several tons of dirt and automobile traffic is barred from the area. Old Sac's regular corps of costumed docents is supplemented by extra volunteers and professional reenactors to recreate life in Sacramento as it was in the mid to late 1800's.

Downtown Old Sacramento! (August 2017)
Old Sacramento is one of my favorite places and holds a lot of great memories for me. As a teenager, Sacramento is where I fell in love with museums. Sacramento has a rich history with its famous gold rush days. It's also our state capital. During a recent August road trip with my sister, Sylvia, we visited the historical shopping district where you can take an underground tour of area. I highly recommend this one hour educational tour. I hope you enjoy this video. Thanks for watching! And have a fun & happy day. Learn more about Maria at
